Some news and videos

Gas clouds are just... wow.
You can pass through them and hide in dense zones. From devs, some of them will have temperatures (will require suits with temperature resistance in EVA like in planets). They will be used too for fuel collecting gameplay (Starfarer in mind).

If you want to see what refinery gameplay look like

Look, Chris had space clouds in the WC games, the WC movie, and the WC cartoon and also in that game he ended up not making, so of course the same nonsense will appear in SC. Can't give up the cartoonery just because it's no longer a cartoon.

RE: The Refinery mechanics

How do you go about unloading unrefined/loading the refined materials?
I'll investigate later...I've only watched a couple of fairly general videos on the refinery process since nobody seems to know how it works yet... so from the perspective of someone like me who mines more than anything else... I find the addition of the refinery gameplay one of the more positive things in 3.12 (as well as the new HUD for the prospector and Mole). I haven't had a chance to test all of the new stuff out (Cyberpunked)...but I'll get around to it eventually since I've been waiting for it in SC for some time. :)

Basically, the refining process takes time. You upload the raw ore from your Prospector/Mole...decide on which refinery process you'll be using, I assume different process's garner different results as well as costs/time involved. You can then fly off leaving the refinery to process your stuff (there's an in game message when it's done). You then fly back to the refinery and select which ship to load the refined product into...a hauler rather than a miner and it doesn't have to be the ship you fly to the refinery in... then you head off to a market to sell it.

It would make sense to process several loads at one time rather than piecemeal by the shipload...so you can deposit the ore, go off and mine some more until the unrefined ore at the refinery is worth paying for the process.

That's from what I can gather...it's not a simple one step process but rather an industrial undertaking that involves several steps...I kinda like it... assuming it works as advertised. Time will tell :)

If we get space forklifts or not-powerloaders, hit me up.

...forcing you to use something else if you have the luxury of owning more than one ship...if you don't, hard luck, you'll be sitting around in a spaceport quite a bit.
Buy more ships, then? ;)

Also, at one point there was a bug where you could submit the same refinery job more than once. Perhaps see if you can trigger that. :D

I think handheld tractor beams consigned these to the dustbin.
It can only handle lightweight containers. Can't move big containers.

ehm, no thanks.
Perhaps you might spend some time watching this from two years ago made by a single developer in his spare time. I know that everything that isn't SC for you doesn't exist, but it is gorgeous.
I use it from time to time. Gorgeous too.

A big chunk of this too: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/engineering/14677-Design-Notes-Cargo-Interaction

I'm quite harsh towards CIG, but I won't blame them for trying a path that for once shouldn't bring them more problems than it could solve.

That would be fine, and I d tend to agree. Thing is, the previous intents and expectations (higher level of detail and "fidelity" on paper), now largely scrapped for a very simplistic and "magical" solution, were sold for significant amounts of pledge money. If this was a dev doing their own thing as they see fit with their own money I would not have major issues.

Hey, if you can move this guy around with the tractor beam then it's all still coherent...

Full blown mech suit. Somewhere between a space suit and the power loader from Alien. These repair the outsides of large ships, move heavy objects in hangars, etc.

Pretty space clouds are one thing. CIG do nice graphics. CR is totally obsessed with it.

But when it comes to actual bugs and gameplay...

Love SaltEMike's response.
