Krieger did a great post for newcomers covering a lot of info. I'll accent a few.
Mouse/keyboard controls? Here are two. The 2nd one might be modified for efficiency.

Here's Frontier's official YouTube site for training.
Elite Dangerous
There are also ton of YouTube training videos. Go to YouTube and type 'Elite Dangerous whatever...'. Some are great while others not so much. Some players get excited playing ED and have more streaming video talent than experience playing ED. That is OK as we all love the game.
The Elite games have traditionally supported the mouse/keyboard. ED also supports many different HOTAS controllers without any profile software required with many default bindings. Setting up custom controls is performed in-game with Options/Controls page. Whatever you choose the controls in ED have a high learning curve and many are combined to achieve the expected control. Understanding them is going to take a while because you will need to understand how to play the specific part of the game to use them. Knowing them all may take many months. Find a YouTube video.
So start out simple, decide what controllers to use and if you like the game or not, and go from there. Get comfortable with the controls and learn how to make some credits as you are going to need them. If you die and not enough to pay for the rebuy you start the game all over.
Me, I use a Logitech X-56 Grey HOTAS which is awesome beating any competition out there for programming every binding in ED if your mind can remember all of them. It's downfall is a sordid history of reliability and while the gray has improved the design since the Saitek X-55 it's yaw still needs work. Some have replaced the joystick with better versions such as the Thrustmaster Warthog and some very awesome Russian versions. Still I can also use mouse/keyboard bindings and find that the mouse tracks fixed weapons a lot better than any HOTAS. PvP players know this. This is how detailed ED can get.
You have selected a game that can take years to master most of it. If you don't have patience, dedication, MANY hours playing and an understanding family you are not going to be happy! You have been warned.
Regards
