Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

We don't really notice cloud's motion from space. On planet's surface we do and we'll do more in 3.12 because of the new cloud's shadow.

Yeah that was kind of my question. So these clouds do actually cast live shadows on the surface? Or it's just an effect seen from space?

I think for science you need to fly down in your Aurora and chase some cloud shadows Ant :)

(I'd call for a video, but that always ends up with people actually posting SC videos here. Which can be quite dull :/)

Someone on SA pointed out a rather silly trope, that is why do birdmen fly bird shaped ships? You don't see humans flying human shaped ships.

Same reason the behind the D'Deridex and K'vort and all the other bird like Sci Fi ships perhaps

Of the Tropes SC uses this Animal like Alien using same Animal styled ships isnt one of them as the other Aliens dont use that designed that look like them.

Predatory birds are oft a motive of Fighting machines that fly on an evocative level, makes sense if on some level if Predatory creatures would have similar evocations.

Plus Space Mecha are Human shaped ships

There is an effect on ground. See it below (should be better with the new patch).

Sidenote : high clouds in atmosphere and storms (at 2:02) are 2 differents cloud tech and don't merge.

Ok cool, it does cast to the ground. That's something.

Yeah there's still something very place-holder-y about it. The the way it just looks like a decal stretched over the globe, separate from the other weather system etc. Not ideal.

The most annoying is the storms not visible from space/high altitude. You target a clean zone to land from space and while heading to it a storm progressively appear on the ground.

Yeah I think that might be why the upper clouds look odd from above too. Maybe high level clouds really do cast shadows like that in real life, but usually there are other layers below intercepting and dispersing those shadows, rather than just huge shadows sweeping neatly over the landscape or whatever.

Ha yes. Like in "They want to add gas cloud tech" or "They want to add tractor beams" or "They want to add refinery gameplay".

Including the menu gameplay of refineries as a tech peak scaled or an achievement achieved comes across as a rather desperate reach ;)

It's funny how many smaller feature additions can be listed though isn't it. (Hand mining! Food! Chess!). Harder to list the big ones ;). (They also 'want to add'...Server meshing! Crewed capital ships! An expanding explorable galaxy!)

The stuff they add is stuff that loads of games have. The stuff that's supposed to make Star Citizen special? Yeah...

That stuff never really appears.

But hey, at least they've added some of their desired big tech. Physics grids work right? (Well, no, not entirely. Vehicle storage, elevators, and the simple act of carrying a box over a threshold are still something of a challenge...). But the planetary tech is looking good! (Well, aside from the tendency for vehicles and people to fall through the surface with alacrity :/). But, hey, the um... wait! Yeah, the unified body model... that's.... that's a thing!

In 'things fall apart' news, it seems that some 1st/3rd person cheating is going on again:

3rd person view seems to be normal.

I wonder if the devs will quietly move further and further away from maintaining it, sneaking in first-person short-cuts and 3rd-person placeholders wherever possible? ;)

Oh :/

Of course they will. And faithful won't raise an eyebrow, or will tell us it's perfectly OK and if you put the "fidelity" argument under their nose they'll tell they knew it had to happen because they know SC better than you and you're stupid to think CIg would have kept their words and promises.
Did we see some kind of protestation when fideliciously physicalized elevators happened to move in ridiculous directions through the scenery and not in a fideliciously physicalized way? No.

It's an achievement when the tech behind all screens of the alpha seems to be a really cool tech (Building Blocks). The screen is simple, the tool made by CIG to manage screens is an achievement for them.

The Idris Attack mission is back in 3.12. ToW still lacking.
Similarly lacking are working trade terminals at outposts...and refuelling on the landing pad. Ci¬G have done their usual thing, which is repeated every patch, of spending time adding new stuff that only half works whilst ignoring older, persistently broken...and essential... gameplay elements.

As a slight nod to the positive...my pirate Caterpillar has had a facelift, it's gone all black and Jolly Roger piratey, very dashing (the server 30k'd before I managed a screenshot)....Now if only the trade terminals worked and the servers weren't beset by persistent 30k's...I might even be able to fly it. ;)
