Newcomer / Intro Hi guys I'm new and in trouble.

Krieger did a great post for newcomers covering a lot of info. I'll accent a few.
Mouse/keyboard controls? Here are two. The 2nd one might be modified for efficiency.

Here's Frontier's official YouTube site for training.
Elite Dangerous

There are also ton of YouTube training videos. Go to YouTube and type 'Elite Dangerous whatever...'. Some are great while others not so much. Some players get excited playing ED and have more streaming video talent than experience playing ED. That is OK as we all love the game.

The Elite games have traditionally supported the mouse/keyboard. ED also supports many different HOTAS controllers without any profile software required with many default bindings. Setting up custom controls is performed in-game with Options/Controls page. Whatever you choose the controls in ED have a high learning curve and many are combined to achieve the expected control. Understanding them is going to take a while because you will need to understand how to play the specific part of the game to use them. Knowing them all may take many months. Find a YouTube video.

So start out simple, decide what controllers to use and if you like the game or not, and go from there. Get comfortable with the controls and learn how to make some credits as you are going to need them. If you die and not enough to pay for the rebuy you start the game all over.

Me, I use a Logitech X-56 Grey HOTAS which is awesome beating any competition out there for programming every binding in ED if your mind can remember all of them. It's downfall is a sordid history of reliability and while the gray has improved the design since the Saitek X-55 it's yaw still needs work. Some have replaced the joystick with better versions such as the Thrustmaster Warthog and some very awesome Russian versions. Still I can also use mouse/keyboard bindings and find that the mouse tracks fixed weapons a lot better than any HOTAS. PvP players know this. This is how detailed ED can get.

You have selected a game that can take years to master most of it. If you don't have patience, dedication, MANY hours playing and an understanding family you are not going to be happy! You have been warned.

Regards

Thanks, dumb question, what is WASD
What is WSAD? It is the gamer's short version of the QWERTY universal keyboard used on most computers on the planet. Four keyboard keys that are used to interact with many video games in lieu of arrow keys or a controller. W and S control forward and backward movement, while A and D are left and right. Q, E, F, X, Shift and Spacebar are also used in various games. Now you know.

Regards

. So far I haven't been able to find a tutorial that starts with the basics and then gets you into it a bit at a time. Could somebody help with this please and point me in the right direction. Thanks.
Try this walkthrough series. You need to do the basic training first that the game walks you through to get your pilot's licence. To avoid losing your mouse play the came in full-screen, not with a window around it. In the options/graphics, expand the "display" line at the top to see an option for windowed or full screen:

Many people (me included) expected the cockpit to have click-able controls - expectation from flight sims I suppose. So navigating screens was hard to get used to at first, there is a guide in the (outdated) manual linked from the launcher so defaults are:

movement defaults are different but related:

It is indeed. I'll agree it's not the easiest of games to get into but, on the flip side, it's probably the most rewarding.

One of the things to do is making sure you have all your key binds set up so they are easy to remember and actually locate. After a while, you'll find you don't look at your controls as your muscle memory kicks in and you don't even think about it.

Another thing is, don't rush. Take your time. It will all start making sense after a while.

So, yeah, welcome to the vertical learning curve!
Thanks. I actually got to launch my ship last night and mess with the controls, got three targets before disaster struck LOL . I have a Xbox controller and found it works - P&P but not all things, I still have to use my keyboard, so yeah still things to sort out with controls amongst other stuff. I actually got the xbox controller to use with the Msfs camera, I've been flight simming for some years and recently got Microsofts new flight sim, not using it much as it has a long way to go with development, and now I've found ED, I'll be spending most of my time here, think I'm gonna get hooked. thanks for the tips.

Thanks this is a big help. I have a Xbox controller and found it works for ED, but didn't know all of those you have listed. Flight sim, yep been doing that for quite a few years, LM P3D and now MSFS, but now I've found ED I think I'll be spending most of my time here, nice change from 787's, 320's and the like also a LOT more challenging.
Again, thanks for your help.

I also use an Xbox style controller. It can handle quite a number of the functions but you'll undoubtedly choose some of them based upon what you determine to be the important ones.

That said, when you've done some of the tutorials to get a little introduction, don't hesitate to ask here what functions CMDRs tend to map to their controllers. You'll find many CMDRs willing to help.
A good amount of this is driven by how you like to play but there are definitely some essential ones that won't really be different from one player to another.

Have fun - and welcome!

Just tried to put another post up, disappeared. Anyway, I'm stuck on the scanner lesson. Did the RT scan and haven't received any further instruction from the CMDR as what to do next. Could I get some help please - thanks.

Do what it tells you in the top-right of your HUD. You need to press [MOUSE 1] or {whatever that says} to do the scan (hold until scan completes).

Here is what to do:
