Naval advancement missions seem a bit broken.

Picked up a Navy advancement mission. Pretty low level (advance to Squire) and the threat was determined to be Harmless.

Go there and the only resource extraction sites in the whole system (there are about 6 of them) are level 3 or 4. My ship for missions is a Cobra Mk4 A rated so nothing special. Also a signal appeared which was blue but again level 2. I ended up hanging around a level 2 RES for about an hour and not one pirate spawned much less the faction I was after. Absolutely tons of my faction police though so I wouldn't have got much of a look in anyway!

Is this right? Seems bit broken to me.

You have to use the blue target mission USS if there aren't any suitable POIs to hunt in (that or fit an interdiction module and do it the old school way).

I've done these missions recently with a new commander and the targets in the blue mission USS are really suitable and plentiful for your needs.

Level 2 threat is really, really tame. If it was a harmless ranked mission the targets will be harmless or close to and they will not assist each other.

Ah OK see I thought that because it said Threat 2 and the last time I entered one of those I was jumped by 4 ships so didn't last long!

Keep doing the normal missions until a promotion one comes to deliver something. They're much easier and safer. In case you don't know, you don't have to do the promotion mission immediately. You'll still get the full rep from all missions towards your next rank and the one after, etc even if you don't do the promotion ones, so you can do tthe promotions when you want or when the most desirable ones occur.

The main thing you need to worry about with promotion missions is the Scarlet Krait that will jump you when you hand in the mission - gets me every time ;)

In general for USS’s, the “threat” level indicates the number of ships in the signal source location. Not necessarily all (or any) of them will be hostile. For mission USS’s where you are hunting a target, obviously at least 1 is expected to be hostile.

Can't see why they've included these missions if most people just avoid them as they are bloody annoying. Went to a Threat 2 signal, got there and there were 4 pirates all of whom opened fire. What is the point in that?

They should have called it Elite Two Extremes.

"Fight against the odds! Suicidality so! OR Fight with so many security forces in the place you'll be lucky to get a shot in! The choice is yours!".

Bah anyway. It's made me grumpy. This happens every two years or so I try my hand at combat for a change and the lack of a decent progressive fight system upsets me then I slink back to exploration cos quite frankly the combat is soul destroying. I just want to drop into a fight with 1 PvE pirate who is similarly levelled. Is that two much to ask!

I mean, it depends on their rank? If they're 4 harmless targets and you're not...

I've not often seen these scenarios though. What was the mission?

Seems to be working ok for me 🤷‍♀️

The USSs are not so predictable that they become boring. Like in real life, you have to keep on your toes in case that USS 2 is not as 'harmless' as it appears, or that USS offering data or cargo retrieval is not a trap for pirates to ambush you ...

One easy way to do this is find a compromised nav beacon, scan ships till you find a wanted harmless sidewinder or adder then go take them on.

btw the compromised nav beacon just means more ships will be available you can do the same thing anywhere it will just take more time to find a low rank small ship.

I'll wing up with you. What gmt hours do you normally play? Could clear some high/haz res sites. You'll be good.

Something up with your game then. I've reached King on the Empire side and Admiral on the Fed side, no crashes of any kind

Great advice if you're just looking for a good place to hunt but that's a lot of effort for a single rank up mission. You'd need to find the target system that has a CNB with a suitable mission system within 10LY, having only that target system in range for this type of mission.... Wait for the mission. Then you can do it. You can't "just find a CNB" if you've already got the mission. The target system either has one or it doesn't. Cnbs are great but you'd need to approach them in the reverse order to actually benefit from them.

Easier by miles to just do the uss points for one off missions like this.

The OP says they got jumped by four aggressive targets in a threat 2. I'm just interested to know what that misson was because I'm pretty sure it wasn't the solo naval rank up mission they're talking about.

It's been suggested they just do that but they're resisting the advice a bit. Even if one uss turns out to be a bit much, the next likely will just be the 7-10 random non aggressive targets that are easy to pick off.

But, the other advice given, if these uss points are too much for the op, they're way better off just ignoring any mission of this type and should focus on data deliveries. Or get help from others.

Seems rather they'd just prefer to complain about it though. These missions are far from perfect but they're actually mostly pretty well designed for the target commanders. I've done a lot of them with a new free commander and the low rank stuff is really, really tame.

Recently? Never had it on any of my previous times either... But this time....

Edit: of course it could be the Epic launcher 🤔
Scarlet Krait is common with my epic account, followed by a full account log out error. The fix they rolled out last week didn't seem to help, though I've had fewer since.

So they're sort of right... There's a problem with "your" game. And I'm sure the purpose of their post was to help arrive at that analysis. Though, the error has nothing at all to do with ranking up to King ages ago or now... It seems to happen when leaving a station and going to jump.
