HP Reverb G2 - The Hype is real

I think the FOV is probably my only disappointment with the G2 (other than the stuttering in Eliite which you have convinced me is just Elite not the headset).

It’s better in every way than the Rift S and I’ll take the FOV over the weird distortion I get in the Rift because of no physical IPD any day 👍
Soz of I'm not hearing you properly, does the G2 have a worse FOV than the RiftS?

I've had to return to the screen door unpleasantness that is the cv1 after my beloved RiftS died. The only redeeming feature of the OG Rift over the RiftS is its slightly better FOV (my headphones bust).

IIf the G2 has worse fov than the RiftS that's a bitter pill for me. :/

...FOV...

These fields of view are what the games are told to render, for each HMD, as given by their drivers, and the maximum one can get out of them. Every user may not be able to see their entire extents, for various reasons; Most commonly due to the fit of the HMD on their face not allowing them to get their eyes close enough to the lenses for optimal viewing.

Surprisingly I do not see the Rift S in the table...

Incidently, heh; If anybody perusing the database notices they own a headset that does not appear in it, it would be very helpful to the whole VR community if they could contribute to it, by running a small command line tool, available at the site, which queries the HMD through SteamVR or the Oculus runtime; And then submit the results to Risa2000, who is the developer of the tool, and curator of the database. :7

With regards FOV you can simply buy a custom gasket to get your eyes closer to the lenses. The standard gasket puts your eyeballs a long way from the lenses.

You can test this by removing the standard gasket (its magnetic) and holding the HMD as close to your eyeballs as possible.

It definitely yields a considerable gain in FOV, i tested it in the Cliffhouse, SteamVR home and Elite.

I jerry rigged a custom gasket from my selection of aftermarket spares and it worked well.

But, i love the standard gasket way too much to abandon it. The FOV gain didn't help my immersion as much as the supreme comfort.

Considering I have modded all of my HMDs to date (with the exception of the Index) with custom gaskets it speaks volumes about the G2 that its awesome out of the box.

That's awesome

According to the table the hFOV is a good 10 degrees wider than CV1/

I can't use a closer gasket because the wife wears glasses

Finally, I was one of the first people in Russia to buy an HP Reverb G2 ! Currently mastering the transition to this helmet from the Oculus Rift S. First impressions are the most positive. However, I don't know what the maximum resolution will be to work with a helmet. Video card i have NV RTX2080 Super 8 GB

...and it looks like a really good implementation

So, I don't know if this is the first big title to be written against OpenXR, but it's nice to see it finally happening. :)

Frontier would want to redo their VR code for that as well, IMHO -- A single API for all devices should be a boon to any developer, and I bet there's still plenty of botch-y legacy stuff from Oculus' DK1 era early prototype runtimes, back before we had 6dof tracking -- otherwise one might think the game shouldn't somehow manage to suffer tracking drift, at this point. :7

I've had the Reverb G2 for 2 days now. I've been playing ED using the Rift S for the last year. The G2 might be 50% better than the Rift S imo. The G2 is not living up to all the hype imo.

What don't you like about it? 50% better than the Rift S doesn't sound too bad.

With the hype, I was hoping for a bit less blurring at the edges, so that was slightly disappointing. The headset does benefit from high supersampling (>100% in Steam VR) in ED, for the sharpest possible image. Also, the gasket doesn't fit some people very well, giving a smaller sweet spot. There are some suggested mods to help.

The headset doesn't fit as well for me either and the sweet spot is small for me also. I haven't tried any additional settings yet. The hype made it sound it would be much better than I've experienced so far. The Rift S is a good backup if the Reverb G2 had to be sent back for repair. The lenses are a little better than the Rift S.

What is needed is a faceplate that brings the eyes closer to the lenses for users who don't have to wear glasses. This would have the added bonus of increasing the FOV. I don't know why the G2 doesn't have this adjustment built in.

My £50 cash back offer from HP has just been approved. I was really suspicious when I got the email from SystemActive about it, £50 goodwill cash back gesture seemed a bit too good to be true but it is legit.

If you pre-ordered in the U.K. and haven’t seen anything check your email.

IMHO this was much needed, I think they treated all pre-orders very badly, its not like they are a start up or that this was their first headset. Well done them, I just hope they push out fixes soon.

I've just called HP and they say they're not expecting to have the Reverb G2 in stock until May 2021.

So I've ordered a Rift S instead. :(

I visited Dav's Hope for the first time since I got the G2. Extremely Jittery. Had to cut way back on everything just to make it playable.

When I used the Rift S with the Touch Controllers I could get around Dav's Hope pretty well but now with the Reverb G2 and having to use a Hotas since the G2 controllers don't work with ED now it's out of control. It spins me into the racks and I had to self destruct after being stuck in the racks. Total Train Wreck. I need to return to the Rift S and Touch controllers to be able to play ED.
