Having just had my first encounter with a hostile Thargoid vessel this last weekend, I would tend to agree that other humans worry me more...
Got pulled out of hyperspace by the Thargoid and thought ok, be nice to finally have a look at one up close, I slowed my Asp Explorer to a stop then, as the Thargoid approached it scanned me, followed shortly by it launching a barrage of missiles. I'd just been salvaging Thargoid Scanners at a wreck site and I don't think the Thargoids approved of my doing so.
While my Asp does have weapons and shields, they are really just for show and its not really meant to fight, so as my shields failed and my hull started disintegrating around me, I implemented the RSLG* maneuver and boosted away and back into hyperspace, before making a beeline back to the bubble with the AFMU busy patching up my ship's systems.
In years gone past Thargoids used to be a serious threat, pouncing on passing ships whenever they felt like it, now it seems like they just leave you be and stick to their own worlds or NHSS, unless you happen to be transporting their technology (and I can't really blame them for getting annoyed at that). Human pilots however, have been known to attack for no other reason than "because I can" and don't always bother scanning before attempting to destroy a vessel...
