Ships Engineering: move through grades, how?

Ok, I go to see Elvira Martuuk. I donate the required 'relics' and pin blueprint for increased FSD range. I already have the required materials in my inventory to satisfy grades 1 through 4 (still missing chem. manipulators/grade 5), but i can't unlock past grade 2. And i only got that after selling some bounty's (700k CR's) at Elvira's location that I just happened to have on hand.

What am I missing with regard to unlocking grades? I thought I simply had to collect mat's, click a button, and voila! I keep seeing the word "rolls" bandied about. Is that the other part of the process? If so, what is are rolls?

Thanks in advance

You need to keep modding modules with her to gain 'trust', note not via remote engineering but with her directly. Top left of the upgrade screen will show your progress for access to grades 1-5

Thanks, but not sure what that means....."You need to keep modding modules..."? What's that process? I thought I donate the 3 relics, pin the blueprint, and collect mat's to satisfy grade upgrades. I also thought that after donating and pinning that upgrades could be done in Remote Workshops.

There is a Access progress bar in the top left corner when at the engineer station. With the relics you only unlocked acces to grade 1 modules. To get access to grade 2 and further, youll need to "roll" on modules. each roll gives a little bit to the access bar. once the bar filled up u gain the next rank and can upgrade the next grade.
remote engineereing dosnt progress the access bar. gotta be at the station
what you can do when you cant roll more on your current module?
-redo it with another experiement back and forth
-buy a new module and roll on that one
Hope that cleared out some confusion

Youll run out of items on your single ship to upgrade so you need to buy more items to upgrade the trust levels.. then return to the item you wanted to grade 4...
Max grades
G5: Frame Shift Drive
G3: Shield Generator
G2: Thrusters
G1: Shield Cell Bank
If you only targeting the FSD then youll need to buy some thing else and then upgrade that item... till shes willing to do upgrade to G3 upgrades...

The more blueprints you mod the more trust you gain, until, eventually, you'll unlock the next level, and so on, and so on. So, in the beginning, you have to waste materials to gain trust even by rolling blueprints you don't need/want. This is the case with every engineer and every level.

When you've reached G2, to reach G3 faster you'll have to roll G2 blueprints. If you only roll G1 to conserve mats, your progress will be slower (but achievable).

Also, "roll" is each pressing of the "Generate modification" button. I think it's a relic from the previous incarnation of engineering, which was more random generated, like rolling a dice.
Regarding Chemical Manipulators, my advice would be to skip searching for them directly, and do the following:
Find a high population (above 20 million or so) Imperial system. Scan with the Full Spectrum System Scanner until you find a High Grade Emission signal close enough, with a longish duration (highest is about 35 minutes). Go there with limpets and a collector and collect the mats. They'll usually be Imperial Shielding, which is the most reliable G5 material to appear. Log off completely from the game (to the launcher, not to the menu), restart the game, enter SuperCruise and on your external panel, in Navigation, you'll find the same signal very close to you. Again, lock on to it, exit SC and do the same....
When you've been bored enough or full of the mat, find a Material Trader for Manufactured materials and trade to the Chem Manipulators. You get 1 CM for every 6 other G5 materials (like imp shielding).
It's very boring and not intuitive at all, but it's the fastest method, unfortunately.

Appreciate the responses, though my dunce cap is fitting a bit snug today........

So do i have to go back to Elvira with more Soontill relics in order to pin another blueprint, say the shield generators in addition to my FSD blueprint?

No, the unlock is permanent. You dont need more Soontils

You only need to get back to her, with some materials in stash so you can repeatedly engineer some modules until you get her to grade 5
That is: engineer one blueprint to grade 3, then engineer other blue print to grade 3, then go back to the first one and engineer it to grade 4
If you still dont reach the cap for Grade 5 reputation, eventually try to engineer something else to grade 3 or 4

Also, if i have to go back to Elvira what's the purpose/what can be done in RemoteWorkshops?

How best to increase reputation?

Have to admit, I think the quality of information provided by ED with regard to this process absolutely sucks.

The sooner fdev block this exploit the better. Glad people are starting to raise it more as an issue, should help get it fixed :)

Fixing this "exploit" is not a solution. Providing more mats at each USS would be. The same goes for the other type of mats, but that's derailing the thread. Not everyone is a masochist, you know.

I guess they tried when they stopped HGE from popping back from Quit to Menu. Apparently Quit to Desktop is way stronger :)
And yes, quit to desktop still resets the SSD, luckily no one is interested in bromellite Eggs :)

yeah, the fact they already tried to kill it does give a hint it's not intended. I imagine the devs chatting "Well, it won't stop people who task-kill, but who would play a game like that?" - overestimating their players again ;)
