A Special Purpose Ship Design

I hope some will find this design process interesting. I've been visiting Guardian structures recently and often had trouble landing my Phantom (medium ship). Once I gave up and went back for the Cobra, but that made things harder because it can't mount a PD on top. I came up with these criteria for a ship able to collect stuff from Guardian sites and Thargoid crashes:
  • Small ship
  • Point defence on top
  • 32 tons of storage, 2 racks corrosion resistant
  • Burst lasers for charging Guardian space structures

Looking at blueprints, the only small ships which have utility mounts on top are: Dolphin, Courier, Viper 3, Viper 4, Hauler.

I rejected the Courier, Viper 3 and Hauler because their cargo capacity wasn't adequate.

I'm left with two designs...

Dolphin:

Viper 4:

I prefer the Dolphin because of its better fuel scoop, better jump range, extra utility mount and extra SRV. Maybe it also looks more like a research ship.

Has anyone tried landing a Dolphin at a rough-ground Guardian structure? Comments welcome.

Okay but why not just make the landing system less clunky and tedious instead? The idea that a tiny rock would impede my Anacaonda from landing is....absurd. And uneven ground? Yeah FDEV, there's these things called "suspension" you might wanna look into...

I'm all for new ships though I guess so +1!

Just my take, I've done this with and without PDTs and I don't think it's worth stressing over them if you can't fit them or forgot.

The few times I don't kill my target before they launch missiles I just put all pips to shields temporarily and carry on. I think you'd need to really mess up to lose a SRV to the sentinels and the PDT doesn't really come into "edge case benefit".

Might as well fit them if you can. It helps a little. But in my experience the benefit is mostly the resulting smugness that you've out thought centuries old AI. And that's definitely nothing major.

DBX and T6. Both have utilities on top and are practically the same size with T6 at 48.4 x 27.2 x 15 and DBX at 45 x 27.3 x 13.6. DBX jumps farther, but is slower, lot less internal and has worse cockpit view.

DBX is my ship of choice. It can land nearly anywhere. The only downside of it is that it's so good at landing that there are occasions that it'll pick out a viable landing site for the ship that happens to have a rock or a small bump under it, and you won't be able to get the SRV into the hatch, because its ground clearance is so low.
I've not had this problem with the dolphin yet.
