how to distinguish pve pirate chat

Hi,

there is always some pirate chat going on in the chat window. I have big problems to distinguish who is meant by the messages.
Are the messages from the pve pirates just local chit chat from fights between npcs or are they personal messages that threaten me?
Is there an indicator that says "hey, i mean you" that I fail to see? Or is there a way to turn of radio messages that don't concern me?

NPC pirates only talk to specifically to you … so you can be pretty sure they'll interdict you not long after sprouting some nonsense. The only other comms you constantly get is from tourist operators and wedding barges but you can safely ignore those.

When I'm at a minig site there is often some combat going on nearby. These come with messages like "murder, you will regret this" while I break down some asteroids peacefully.
I'm sure that most times these radio messages don't mean me. But when they mean me, I only recognize it when they turn hostile and open fire.

If they're talking about scans, or "what have you got in your hold", or that sort of thing, I think those tend to be more directly addressed to you.

Most of the chat will go on regardless, though.

Mining inside a Resource Extraction Site is pretty tricky - one option is to head about 15km out from the centre where you won't get as many pirates and can hopefully see them coming a bit more easily (on the other hand, also fewer police to defend you) - another option is to head several hundred kilometres away from the centre and just mine somewhere else. You won't get as many fragments per rock, but on the other hand you'll get much less pirate attention, so it might work out better.

Right, I see. That's actually a good question. For some reason I assumed you were talking about when you're in supercruise. Not sure then how you would tell who's talking to you in that case. For some reason in the default colouring I find it difficult to see the name of the NPC who's talking which wouldn't help things either.

Lately I've been seeing a lot of NPC messages to the effect of "officer why are you scanning me". Are they seeing me as authority, and how am I scanning them?

Any text along the lines of "Let's see what you've got in your hold" is an NPC pirate, preparing to cargo-scan you. Pirates will almost always say this before starting to shoot at you. Very rarely, an NPC pirate will spawn without a manifest scanner onboard their ship. These pirates cannot scan you, so instead, they go straight to shooting. Even so, they will still send you a message, along the lines of "I can't be bothered scanning you, so I'll just blow you up and scoop your debris".

Those are smuggler NPCs, being scanned by cops. You'll usually only see them at stations (or sometimes at nav beacons) in jurisdictions where smuggling is a problem.

As for this general question:
Is there an indicator that says "hey, i mean you" that I fail to see?
Yes, there is: a message sent to you and you alone will be headed "[DIRECT]:". A message broadcast in the clear to all listeners (like those annoying wedding barges and cruise liners) will be headed "[LOCAL]:". This applies to messages sent by both players and NPCs.

@Sapyx, you have the ingenious answer to the question (as usual). I forgot about what the [LOCAL] and [DIRECT] meant (I blame it on old age.. :))

Thank you, Sapyx. This is what I was looking for. It will make things a little easier, I hope.
