What's going on with reputation effects from salvage missions?

Twice in a row now I noticed a black box salvage mission reducing my reputation with a completely unrelated faction. The second time I took a screenshot:

That faction where I lost reputation with was not mentioned anywhere in the contract. In fact the contract mentioned under "associated with" the Nuenets Blue Crew, so if anything I would have expected to lose reputation with them. This is kind of a bummer because it completely destroys the option for of doing these missions when they hand out negative reputation for random factions with no way knowing beforehand.

Please also note it was not one of those illegal salvage operations. With those I would assume I'd be technically stealing from someone who would be angry about that, but this was 100% legal salvage.

This happens with most of these missions. The faction you lose rep for are the faction that shot down the ship you picked up the crap from. It doesn't matter if they are legally obtained or not, you are effectively harming another faction and they aren't listed, so you need an educated guess. It's the same for assassination missions. But the rep loss is always smaller than the gain. And it's tiny relatively that a bounty can fix it pretty much.

The game is full of things that aren't mentioned and you're supposed to figure out logically. Like killing loads of pirates in a Res for a faction will make them dislike you at best. It mimics life, but don't pick on the word mimic.

Scroll down in the details when you take a mission - it tells you who it is against (if anyone). This is a legal BB mission:

(That isn't the faction giving the mission)

It's all there if you look :)

I might go double-check this for Salvage/Illegal Salvage at some point... IIRC one of them (pretty sure it's Illegal Salvage) doesn't tell you who the target is, although OPs isn't one of those.

I think both J and Facty are right, which is why I left my original reply a bit vague - I think the legal ones tell you the associated faction but illegal don't. I'd have to look though as J says as I haven't bothered looking for ages, so please can you update if you find out J? They may have updated them. Cheers mate.

So, Illegal Salvage definitely doesn't list it in the mission description

Going to the system doesn't update the mission description either

But in the final submission, a random non-anarchy faction is targeted. Top faction is from the target system, bottom faction was the issuer.

Meanwhile, Legal Salvage definitely shows the target faction per @Factabulous 's post

This is actually fairly consistent with missions... illegal offered by lawful factions never reveal the target until you get in system (but not with Illegal Salvage it seems), and only then through an anonymous contact... while legal reveal the target in the mission description.

As I said above, my observation is that the target faction listed in the contract of a legal salvage mission is not always the one that is actually going to be negatively affected. I suspect a bug that simply lists the wrong faction in the contract.

Thanks for the clarification mate, always good to know these things for sure :)

Ps - interesting nuance about the target being an anarchy too, hadn't considered that, but it makes sense. Cheers J

it's a weirdness, that does not only happen with salvage missions.

sometimes a courier mission will go to a different faction in system - i noticed it when trying to use mission receiver as an influence boost. i think the bug happens somewhere in between - so "target" faction gets lost somewhere.
