So, opinions on whether or not Odyssey is going to bump up the system requirements?

Since none of us have it yet, I suppose nobody knows for sure whether or not Odyssey is going to push our systems a bit, but does anyone have any educated guesses as to whether or not it will? My current system tends to bog down in areas where there is intensive combat going on. Not sure if it is due to my computer or my connection. I have a new rig that has been built and hopefully will be able to reduce some of these problems but I am just wondering if Odyssey is the beast that would have broken my current rig.

Greetings Commanders.

This Thursday, we'll be celebrating the 6 year anniversary of Elite Dangerous with a special anniversary stream! It's going to be an exciting stream and a bit bigger than our usual Thursday affair.

As a result of this bumper edition Thursday stream, we won't be able to do our weekly AMA with you today. Fear not though, we've sneakily been collecting all your Odyssey questions from the last few AMA sessions and have been gathering as many answers as we can from our development team! Here is a selection of some of the questions and answers we've been able to bring you!

.. snip ...

Will Odyssey have the same graphic impact as the current engine in terms of performance or will you need to upgrade your video card?
Odyssey will be optimised to run on your current setting for Elite Dangerous.

Nope, if your current system runs ED it will be fine.

FD have said they've made Odyssey so it can run for anyone that can currently run Elite. Although this is fairly open to interpretation, they didn't say there wouldn't be a performance hit, but I'm sure people can jig with the settings if they're having trouble.

The footage shown so far certainly looks more demanding than Elite currently is. Sometimes when I fly over a planet right now it looks like PS2 era graphics even on max settings. Also worthy of note, that the Odyssey patch will carry a lighting update even for CMDRs that don't purchase the expansion, so there could be some performance issues either way.

Hmmm, sounds then, like I may have overdid it with the new system that was built for me. Oh well, I guess there will be other games to play that can challenge this new rig. As for space games, Elite is still number one for me. Even with some of the QOL issues it has (stupid orange interface) it still is such fun to play.

It's safe and smart to keep the playerbase intact. Other games have learned the benefits of this. I was myself leaning towards the opinion that they should bump the requirements so as to make the expansions more attractive.

I suppose it's better this way. That's before you even consider circumstances lately. I still hope that more assets at least are added to expand the base game because I feel it could use it.

they will also have to run on the XB One and PS4.
So while the maximum fluff might go up, the minimum requirements will have to stay the same

Well, the old beast is now about to be retired. The new one has a ROG STRIX Z490-E motherboard, a 10th Gen i9 CPU, two Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2 TB SSDs, one 8 TB regular HD, 64 GB of Trident Z DDR4 Ram, a ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3090 video card, a ROG Thor Platinum 1200 W power supply, a ROG STRIX Scope RX keyboard, a ROG CHAKRAM mouse, a Fractal Celsius+ S36 Prisma water cooling system and a Fractal Define S2 Vision RGB case. This new one should probably do the trick for a few years. ;)

So this whole thread was just an excuse for you to brag about your new PC?

Actually, only partly. I really did want to know if my current system could handle the game. It will be passed down to a friend who will be playing Elite and I was hoping that it would still be able to handle Odyssey.

So you didn't think to look New and Bulletins sub-forum and multitude of information concerning Odyssey contained therein?

I wanted player's opinions on the matter. I did look at some of the news bulletins but I wanted additional opinions. News bulletins can sometimes be misleading, especially if they are being put out to advertise a product. Getting player's opinions on the matter can help fill in blanks. Thankfully, you folks have set my mind at ease. I am much more confident now that my current computer will work for my friend for playing Elite Dangerous.

So how would some random internet dude/dudette who might not even play the game anymore know more about the specifications required to play the game than the developer? Even if the developer spokesperson is vague, it is still a better answer that someone who is 100% guessing.

Individually, probably not as good as the information provided by the developers. Collectively though, there is a lot of experience tied up in the population of players playing this game and that is a useful source of opinion.

But it is still a bunch of random people just guessing, with no basis, no justification, just basically spreading rumours and for most, trying to promote their own agenda. The only useful information they can pass on is to parrot what the developer releases.

Put it another way, if someone said that your new proposed computer won't run Odyssey would you cancel the order?

Any rhetoric is good, apparently, how could the developers possibly know the specs needed to run their software? I mean, look at CD Projekt Red and their console release! (but ignore that the PC version was only slightly buggy and runs pretty well on anything that isn't a potato ;))

If a bunch of people collectively said it would not work and gave specific reasons why, yes, I probably would. I'd look into those specific details first though to check, but then, those opinions would be a useful starting point to dig deeper. Yes, if this new system were somehow not be proper for the game, I'd probably have to look for something else.
