Odyssey gameplay worries

Well, in my wildest dreams I hope FDev would link exploration and combat gameplay (as they've linked trading and combat): Every once in a while there is a chance a derelict settlement or ruin isn't empty, but there are dangers lurking in the dark. Close to the bubble it could be criminals, smugglers, pirates, cultists; close to Thargoid space it could be Thargoids, close to Guardian space it could be Guardian AI/Constructs and in deep, deep space it could be unknown hostiles.

You could navigate and explore a ruin/settlement by working your way through and around obstacles (e.g. cutting your way through doors with a plasma torch or working the power generators to restore the power grid etc.). There could be traps/threats like automated defense turrets, unstable enviornment (a ceiling comes crashing down, a floor gives in). There could be loot/salvage/logs waiting as a "reward"...

I mean, there's plenty of stuff you could do with space legs and exploration, that is more than picking/scanning flowers and posing for screenshots

Yeah that sounds exciting but then I recall how clunky, boring, and perfunctory doing anything in an SRV is in Elite. So why would doing any of that on two legs be any different?

All that you have suggested as possible foot based game play is good and would be great!
But a simple note for you...
If this was Star Citizen we would wait for 5 years while that was implemented.
But this is ED... It will be the very barest bones that still constitutes foot based game play.

So while dreaming of what ED 'could' be like is nice.
It's not going to happen...

That's RL... In your face, sadly. 😏

No worries, I've learnt that much about Elite these last 2 1/2 years ;) It's basically the game that made the expression "close, but no cigar" into an own form of art. At the moment I only expect what I've seen, which is a first-person shooter attached to the Elite universe. That's also why I haven't pre-ordered Odyssey yet 🤷‍♂️

I think the key to the success of Odyssey is more basic. Here's some of the base features I'd like:
  • Vastly improved networking which will actually support these multi-player engagements they are talking about.
  • A suit which has gravity assist on and off, so gravity can really make a difference in how you move and fight on the ground.
  • An improved mission system!!!!
  • Good NPC AI.
If they eventually get the basic things like this right and I never see the bridge of my carrier, I'll be fine with that.

In a word... Exactly!
I think you are being overly generous with the word 'close' but that's what 4 years of playing ED does to you.
AX missiles anyone 🤦‍♀️
To be fair, fdev tried but soon realised the hard way that players will break just about anything.

My worst-case Scenario :
  • nope, no walking around anywhere except Settlements/Hubs and on the Planet Surface
  • doing the exact same thing (Composition Scanner) we're already doing, just on differently flavored Plants that each come in slightly colorized variations but are effectively the exact same

Brace yourself

Yep, but I'm (still ;) ) willing to give FDev the benefit of the doubt. These last years they've focused on Odyssey and I "hope" that's the reason why some of the more recent content had some "issues" in terms of quantity and quality. If Odyssey becomes a half-cooked bug fest though...I don't want to think about it to be honest.

Despite what I said above about my current expectations, I cannot imagine for the life of me, that in all those years of developing Odyssey, there wasn't someone at some point in some meeting who said "Uhm, guys, those guns are all cool and stuff...but what about exploration?". I mean, ignoring exploration (or just giving it a token nod with some half baked features) would be akin to developing a new FIFA game, but focusing on tennis.

That's actually the sad part about Odyssey for me: Elite is one of my all-time favorite games and one of only three games that got past the 1000 hours mark. Odyssey is supposed to be the greatest expansion in the history of the game. And here I am, not "hyped" and counting the days to release, but caught somewhere between "hope" that everything will be allright and "fear", that FDev lost touch of their player base and developed a game for the mythical "wider audience" (FPS/action enthusiasts with the attention span of a drunken squirrel on crystal meth)

I really don't have the concerns of some of the posters here. I've pre-ordered Odyssey for my 2 most-used accounts (just because I wanted to) in readiness for the alpha and then launch.
For me (note the qualification) Odyssey is just another expansion to the game I'm having fun playing - it adds another dimension to the game, that is about all - and I'm quite looking forward to seeing just how foot-based gameplay is implemented, from the 'in-game footage' we have been shown it might be fun combat, and if the netcode still has issues, it won't be bothering me too much.

I'm hoping to walk around and find something 'interesting', like more lost loot which I can put on my ship, only to be interdicted by omnipresent NPCs, who really shouldn't know what I was up to yet say the usual mantra: "I knew the rumour was right!" :D

My only real concern about Odyssey (and I’ve said this plenty of times before) is the continued lack of multi-controller support on consoles.

We can still only one have thing plugged into the game at a time, so it’s either a Hotas OR a control pad not both.
And there’s still no mouse & keyboard support for those that would like it.

Constantly having to unplug and plug in my hotas/Xbox pad is going to drive me up the wall if it doesn’t get addressed.
And I know quite a few console users feel the same way from the discussions on the Xbox/PlayStation forums.

Both consoles already support these features but it’s down to individual developers to implement them and I really hope FDev sort this out in the extra few months we console users have to wait.

Beyond that everything I’ve seen of Odyssey so far looks great and I can’t wait to explore the new dynamic it will bring.

Same.

I'm kinda surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet but EDO will come with a new xeno biology rank which by it's very nature will include at least something for exploration. As for what exactly no one knows of course but at the bare minimum this would mean scanning/sampling new and existing fauna. Similar to the existing gameplay loop for SRVs so maybe not a whole lot of new content but at least some new codex entries to unlock would already be a welcome addition.
The little PR we did get so far concentrated on combat and settlements probably because traditionally most of the gameplay is centered around inhabited space. That and the fact that while combat itself is more or less optional the underpinning mechanics are relevant to all professions - from the basic UI elements to stuff like heat and armor mechanics for ships which is just as important for explorers as it is for combat pilots.
