Not time to expect this yet
Same, just the simple thing of having to navigate AROUND lava flows, or if you get reckless and catching some tenuous planet air over a ridge and dive INTO a lava flow by accident... bringing new meaning to EMERSION and then dying.
Lava can bring more to the game than people realize
Obviously folks sure would like something more....
- you enter Glide at a steep angle
- you see Hypersonic Plasma building up on the leading edges of the Ship
- entering the Stratosphere you get increasing vibrations
- reaching the Atmosphere, you pick some clouds that don't look as stormy as the surrounding ones
- you enter the cloud layers while the Ship goes subsonic
- your buddy waiting on the ground hears the sonic boom of your entry from your Ship with the usual delay
- you see heavy rain building up on the Canopy, some hard vibrations as you pass through
- passing the lower cloud layers, you see your landing spot near the beach, while your Ship leaves thick, persistent contrails in the high humidity
- you land close to your buddy
- still light rain coming down and running down your Canopy and Ship as you exit
- you see first sunlight streaking through the lesser dense clouds in the distance and a bit of blue sky as the weather is improving
- you and your buddy go on a joyride, while your Ship remains parked near the palm-tree-ish trees of the nearby forest
- you and your buddy hear the noises of strange animals that witnessed your arrival.... let's hope they're friendly, but to make sure you ready your Personal Defense Weapons
Considering how hard it is to gain Elite in the other three fields I'm expecting an abundance of stuff to scan. The only life we know of so far on these planets is plant life that you can take samples of and become Elite in. I'm not expecting there to be a lot more but who knows? This is apart from the NPCs at the land outposts, of course.
I can't be <redacted> to look for it, but it was one of the early questions and the response was they were still looking into it (which I took to mean no new flight mechanics but they'd already said no internals or VR and didn't want too many negatives). Why has no body mentioned any kind of new flight entry mechanics for tenuous atmospheres.
nothing in the Q & As.
Early odyssey speculation was nothing but talk about atmospherics. Since the reveals I think an important aspect of play and immersion has been forgotten about.
time to remind FDEV.
Unfortunately the real eruptions occur once a century on averageLava, Volcanoes... would be cool to see!

Yeah, along with how the transition from ship to ground, it was something they hadn't settled on yet. I suspect the thin atmospheres won't really need much more than what we have now, but the new graphics will hopefully sort the drop out in fog that happens during current glide phase.Considering how hard it is to gain Elite in the other three fields I'm expecting an abundance of stuff to scan.

If the drip feed of Odyssey information would accelerate, I suppose we’d know. I’m starting to fear that all of the gameplay elements of Odyssey have been discussed already and they are shallow in their implementation. Not sure why at this point in the game’s development they wouldn’t be promoting more features from the game itself rather than just talking about it... unless the features aren’t very impressive.

Honestly, before FDEV started working on Odyssey, I think they should have worked on a "Worlds" DLC. They gave us Horizons, but now they should have created something like "New Horizons" with Earth likes and strange new planets with atmospheres, with lava, lakes, oceans of water and methane. But who really knows what's going to be Odyssey.
Oh, it certainly has been a very long wait indeed! In case you are interested, way back during the KS FD proposed a (tentative!) plan, where they said they'd launch a 'base version' of the game in 2014, and then would iterate on that via paid expansions. They didn't go into a lot of detail, but gave the following examples of paid-for DLC they were aiming for (remember this was also part of the advertisement for the Lifetime Expansion Pass; clearly they had to give some indication that would be worth it in the end!) in no particular order:
1) non-atmo planetary landings
2) atmo-landings (in multiple consecutive DLC) including flora and fauna
3) spacelegs: combat and station interiors
4) spacelegs: EVA and ship internals, including boarding
5) huge 'executive class' ships
Step one was done via Horizons after one year, step 5 was added via Fleet Carriers in the 'free' update last year (a bit odd, but hey). For years there have been a forum war about which of the Two Big Features should come first: atmo planets or spacelegs. With Odyssey, FD seems to have gone for 3) plus a little bit of 2).
FD also made it clear to its investors Odyssey is a first step in a long-term financial commitment to ED. So I am sure we can look forward to continue the Great Debate in its new form: should FD focus on 4) or continue working on 2)? The biggest change Odyssey has brought with it is the confirmation FD is not done with ED, as many had started to fear over the years following the release of Horizon, and is still continuing on the path it set out on almost a decade ago.![]()
Shallow is harsh .. it'll be Version 1.0 because in the end, that's exactly what it is.
The new planet tech looks good to me but it's not a drastic leap from no atmosphere (sometimes with mists) to tenuous (almost no) atmosphere. I am looking forward to the exobiology, I really like the space based phenomena but even though we're getting some, I don't think new planets is what Odyssey is mostly about.
That wouldn't be a bad thing if done tastefully?I want floating islands and tall blue cat aliens or I'm going home.

I mean, it’s a fear I’m starting to have.. not saying it will be shallow, but the drip feed and reluctance to show features by this point should be worrying. The way Odyssey is being marketed so far is starting to remind me of No Mans Sky before its initial launch. Closely guarded on information and only pre-scripted/pre-recorded demos.
I'm betting that we'll also get a new level of exploration tagging. We have "discovered" and "mapped" - I'm betting we get something corresponding to on-foot scanning, indicating that you walked on the surface. It might even be region specific. So, you could get credit for exploring each region.
And when we eventually get earth-likes, that'll be the tag for exploring a continent.
