VR Upgrade... Rift 1 to ?

Hey

To set the scene, i have a

Rift 1
1080p (if i can ever buy a GPU that will be upgraded)
4 Monitors all of which i use

I wouldnt consider myself more then a casual VR gameplay and this is partly because i have 4 monitors and when i want to use my Rift i have to switch out the HDMI plug in the rift and vice versa and because the sensor placement is a pain in the . So Im thinking quest 2, if im reading things right i can use the USBC on the front of my case rather then a GPU port which solves the first problem and there are no more room sensors solving the second issue. Is this thinking right? I think i would fast become more then casual if the setup is quicker

Also as im going from a Rift to a Quest 2 as a casual VR gamer im expecting a big leap in quality, is that a fiar assement?, has anyone made that jump

Lastly am i not considering something i should and is there a better headset that would suit my scenario that i am unaware of?

Really appciate some opinions

Uncanny, I have the same setup - 4 monitors and CV1 was a pain to use, so I just upgraded to the Quest 2 and its fantastic.

I prefer to use it wireless via Virtual desktop, rather than via the oculus link cable. Seems to work better for me.
your happy with the res of the Q2 then?

Don't know if you've made your decision yet.

Just upgraded from a CV1 to a Quest 2, two days ago. The increased resolution, lack of noticeable SDE and increased clarity is amazing. I'm yet to play with HMD quality to see if I can make it any better, but I've not seen any need yet as the text and far away ships are clear as day.

TL: DR. Q2 is well worth the purchase.

Re the setup, it's easy enough. In summary:
  1. download the Oculus app on your phone
  2. put the Q2 on your head and link to the phone app
  3. Run a USB-C to USB-3.2 cable from your Q2 to the PC. The USB-C to USB-C cable that comes with the Q2 is a charging cable only. I bought a 3meter USB-C to USB 3.2 cable from Kiwi for £20 through Amazon. I didn't want to shell out £90 for the official oculus one. Seems to work very well. I've secured it with 3 cable ties to the Q2.
If you want to link Q2 wirelessly to the PC, it's a little bit more involved. I managed to get mine working after several hours messing about, but my internet isnt great, latency is poor and I was getting stuttering, even after decreasing the Q2 Mzh to the lowest setting. It's not a big deal though, I mainly got Q2 for Elite which as you know, is a seated experience and doesn't require roomscale.

I was going to get the HP Reverb G2, but these factors influenced my Q2 purchase:
  • G2 was always out of stock
  • G2 is double the price, but not twice as good (on paper)
  • G2 doesn't have wireless
  • G2 doesn't have stand alone games you can D/L straight onto the HMD
  • G2 would probably struggle on my 2080, so I would likely have to (try to) get a 3080 @£800.
  • I wear glasses & was concerned I'd scratch the G2 lenses. I didn't want to shell out another £80 for prescription lenses & knew the Q2 came packaged with a glasses spacer. It works brilliantly.
  • Minimum ~£1500 for 1 game in VR? Nah.

For me, only things against Q2 are:
  • mandatory FB account. However, you are not forced to use FB once you've logged on
  • the default strap is awful. I've installed a NEWZEROL strap (through Amazon for £40) which has a halo design and is superb
  • I'm not a fan of the foam faceplate; I've ordered 2 cloth VR covers (£27 through VRCover)
  • Some have said "outer space" isn't black enough. Compared to an OLED, probably. Personally, space looks nice and black to me

Let us know how you get on CMDR. I'm interested in reading about your experiences.

Everyone has said the same about the head strap and faceplate so they'll be bought along side the unit. I reckon i have made my mind up now, the fact im not a 24/7 VR gameplayer and will save on the dedicated graphics port i think the Q2 makes the most sense

Cheers for the advice

You should give the default headstrap a try before you buy a second one. For some people it is perfectly comfortable. (The original Quest strap genuinely was uncomfortable because the Q1 was heavy, Q2 is less heavy.)
My misses, two kids and I use the default strap no worries.

Obvs buy if you need one, just thought I might save you a few ££ if you dont need it. :)

FYI I have a Rift and ordered a Reverb G2 in December, was then notified that my delivery date would be June 2021 so I decided to try the Quest 2 and I was blown away with the huge leap in clarity and quality. I would also say that it offered much better head tracking accuracy than the Rift. There are times when the Rift seems to be confused what is my looking straight ahead seated position and the Quest 2 never ever does. Also when making a sharp head turn to the side there are occasionally stutters on my Rift which simply never occur on the Quest 2. I actually found the default head strap was comfortable and not half as bad as people suggest, although I did use mine with the deluxe headstrap eventually because I had purchased it with the unit, but quite frankly it was a nice to have not a need to have which some reviews imply.

FOV is about the same but the lack of screen door and incredible clarity right across the whole display are outstanding. I was able to get decent performance on most games despite running a lowly I7-7700/GTX1080 setup. The ASW works fantastically well and I was able to get the headset locked at 45fps in full res.

After buying the Quest 2 my delivery date on the G2 changed to late Jan so I decided given my use case is driving, flying and space sims I would return the Quest 2 within 28 days and wait to try the G2. I'm still waiting on the G2 - it was delayed but is now due tomorrow - we'll see, but it had better be flipping fantastic or else I will be happily returning it and buying another Quest 2 - it's that good!! One thing I noticed in the past 2-3 weeks of being forced back to my Rift is that it feels like being drunk - everything is so incredibly blurry!! FS2020 in particular looks just awful in the Rift by comparison!!

There's a lot of people on Reddit who seem to have had problems and hardware failures with the G2, whereas the Quest 2 just works perfectly out of the box - every time and gives the impression of being a very robust, stable and dependable product. It seems to me you can pay £650 for a G2 to get 100% performance or you can pay £400-£470 ish to get 85-90% of the performance in a robust Quest 2. Realistically if you buy a Quest 2, a suitable cable and a deluxe head-strap then that's the final price so it's not really a case of £299 v £650.

Love this!
BUT another thing to consider is that it seems current hardware can't maximise either HMDs at 90Hz.
So regardless of which HMD you choose to get, G2 or Q2, you aren't even able to get 100% out of either! I like that as it feels future proof to me.

I didn't need a headstrap but instead bought:
The last two are for wireless.

So that's £425 which includes the option for tether-free PCVR. :)

Mate, there are tons of great games for VR now. Yeah it still isn't a vast ocean like pancake game library, but sales of quest 2 have recently doubled, and the install base is growing pretty fast. This means that we will soon have a profitable and suitable install base to develop for so there will only be more. Why restrict yourself to Elite? It's not 2016 anymore ;-)
