WHY is an A rated KWS TRIPLE the power draw of A shield booster?

Not really on topic, but nearby, is the KWS really useful?

P.S. I was always more interested in why the shield enhancers in utility and how long it took me to find the guardian shield enhancers in the store.

Just like female bikini armour in Korean RPG's has the same defense rating as male full body plate armor, it's all about the game and not about realism!

There are some things that should be done as realistically as possible, that is the galaxy itself, and some things they can take liberties with for the purpose of game play and balancing, weapons, power draw etc.

If I’m specifically out bounty hunting then I always carry one. It’s free money to get the extra bounties, even if you lose 25% using an Interstellar Factor. Not sure how much extra you get, probably not a lot, but FOMO means one is equipped on my HazRes FDL.

I also like to keep one on other ships for when I’m travelling through lawless systems as well. Nice to see what bounties are around, also nice to get paid in a lawless system for killing the pirates that interdict me.

I'm a bounty hunter, too. 1 mission is about 4-5 million, and in the rewards accumulate a lot more money, but they have to exchange them at interstelar and it is not always at hand and I do not pay attention to this money.

It turns out that the additional awards already fall without any KWS.

The technobabble answer to why it uses so much power would be that it has to transmit and receive target data over many/all inhabited systems within a few seconds, TBH I'm surprised it doesn't turn the ship into a small nova! ;)

And it still likely only increases your bounty values by 10-15%, accounting for almost certainly handing the extras in at an Interstellar Factors.

all the utility scanners have crazy power draws. At e-rated they're fairly reasonable, but from there, each step up adds an extra 500m range at the cost of doubling the power draw.

I usually go for C or D rated, whatever I've got the spare power to run.
For a KWS you might as well match it to your weapon's effective range and bind it to the same trigger.

Exponential costs for linear performance improvement is how every module in the game is "balanced", at best.

Why does a 6E cargo rack cost 360 times as much as a 1E cargo rack, but only carry 32 times as much cargo?
Why does a 6A fuel scoop cost over 15 times as much as a 6C fuel scoop for a 40% speed increase?
Why does a 3A power distributor cost over 5 times more than the 4D power distributor, despite having almost the same regeneration rates, worse mass, worse power consumption, and only marginally more integrity?

The utility scanners are a little unusual in that the exponential increase has been applied to power consumption (relevant) as well as credit cost (nowadays entirely irrelevant) - double the range for sixteen times the power draw. This one is particularly strange because:
A-rated KWS: range 4km, power draw 3.2MW
E-rated KWS: range 2km, power draw 0.2MW
E-rated KWS with Long Range G4 engineering: range 3.92km, power draw 0.28MW (and -25% scan angle, but that's pretty minor)

Essentially all the numbers were made up without particular reference to either how useful the item actually was or any in-universe justification, and then by the time they might have gone about doing anything about that, there were explorers operating at the limit of their jump range on the galactic fringes making most retrospective changes to modules impractical. Same again with engineering, repeatedly.

Does seem people are more interested in shuffling deckchairs on Horizons than letting fdev concentrate on Odyssey :(
Indeed - why worry about all the weirdly imbalanced Horizons gear when we have weirdly imbalanced Odyssey gear to be worrying about?

I stopped using a KWS long ago for that very reason and the fact that it slows game play, the scan is sloooow.
