New Horizons Ships Not In Base Game

Probably better so, I'm under impression that logging into the base game is still the easiest way to solve a case of missing ship/falling inside the planet.

If that became a need, it would be simpler to code the function into the horizons client than support an obsolete client running on potentially hardware not shared with what the existing version requires.

Well to be fair, there must be other people in my shoes, otherwise they would of just updated the base game to Horizons from the get go. I'm curious on the actual number of people with graphics cards not supported.

Honestly I wish they would just combine them with the option to load planets or not.

Your issue is not just landing on planets. The game since horizons requires at least dx11 for the shader support in addition to any other graphics features utilized in dx11 not found in previous versions.

That may primarily have been a requirement due to planetary surfaces when deciding to make the move to dx11, it's not necessarily the only place dx11 specific code exists.

I know some of you will give the easy answer of "get a new PC", but I've been going through a lot the past 4 years (Personal stuff) that prevents me from affording a brand new PC. This game has been helping me a lot as of late and I thank you, FD, for that. I understand the engineering and Guardian stuff requires planet landing so I'm not asking for that. Would just be nice to explore in a Phantom or fight in a Chieftain.
Is GeForce Now an interim option? (keeping in mind a strong enough and reliable broadband internet connection)

Horizons means landing on planets (even if you won't) and the check at launch is to make sure the graphics card can generate the planet surface.

I'm aware, that wasn't the issue I raised.

Im assuming you have already made sure your GPU and motherboard have up to date drivers right?

Yes it's all good, the problem is already identified and it's because I have integrated Intel graphics card.

I am using Intel HD Graphics 5500, which it says up to DX 12 works on it. Unless I'm missing something.

Is it a newer laptop with thunderbolt?

Thunderbolt as in? Like the USB port? I think I have one 3.0 and 2, 2.0 USB ports.

What is GeForce Now?

Turn the settings down and you will be able to land on planets ok. I have played ED on a low end laptop before now, and it was horizons

GeForce Now is a cloud gaming service by nVidia in which they "rent" you hardware and let you basically play via remote desktop on their servers. Elite Dangerous is supported.

Actually, that might work. Only one hour though, but that would be enough to buy a ship. Do you know if ships purchased in Horizons can be used in the base game?

Again, my graphics card isn't supported so the game can't even start up using Horizons. If it was allowed, I'd probably be able to play, even if it would be low frame rates. As it stands, Intel graphics aren't allowed in Horizons.

The truth is you already know what the solution to your problem is.

And what is that? Buy a new PC? I thought I mentioned earlier I couldn't do that, :/. Another solution, add support for intel graphics cards.

I am using a Mamba (which was then Horizons only) and can fly it in non-Horizons mode. Even with its engineering effects active.

Thunderbolt 3 is an interface that uses the same connector as USB Type C. You can use it to hook up an external graphics card, since it uses PCI Express.

Geforce Now gives you 6 hours of gameplay per session for only $5 per month. As with any streaming service, though, there will be latency.

OP, you will have to do more research but I googled "usb graphics card for laptops?" and there are alot of links, including Amazon links to purchase items and Youtube videos. So that might be an option as well for you. Good Luck.

Wow. That is probably the smoothest I've ever played a game, lol. Thanks for the tip, much appreciated, ^^.

Said their monthly subscriptions were out of stock, but 6 months for $24.95 isn't that bad once I get the money.

Honestly I would be fine just playing the game without horizons.

I think I would have been too, if it weren't for the fact that Horizon players can interact with non-Horizon players. Mainly I just wanted to try the Phantom out, :p.

Well you have my sympathy, with this graphic card you won't go much further

Horizons and base game interact just fine. You just can't access the horizons content.

The biggest thing you're missing out on is engineering.

I will say that you can get a really cheap desktop to run this game. Old Dell Optiplex computers make fantastic cheap gaming rigs. I see them for around $100 - $150 all the time with an i7. Throw in a cheap video card, and it'll be pretty capable.

just be aware, that you cannot switch to a horizon-only ship from the base game - it simply does not show up in shipyard, even if you own (and engineered) it. if you already in it, it is no problem to log into it even when running the base game.

i had raised that questions in one of the AMAs but got unanswered https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/ama-iii-revenge-of-the-glyph.560541/post-8842556 ... i guess, the number of people running into the problem is just very small (I'm in that boat sometimes, as i switch machines a lot, and one of them needs 25+ minutes to start horizons... or needed, currently that machine can't log into horizons at all. but i have others that can.)
