Newcomer / Intro Solutions to deal with sociopath players ?

Hello, I'm a newcomer.

I was very excited to join the multiplayer mode for all its avantages over playing alone. But only after a few hours, my experience has been more than mitigated.
The only commanders that I've met killed me for no reason (no cargo). Such a toxic behaviour doesn't make me enthusiastic about what's coming next.
Open questions :

- are there any game mechanics to prevent this from happening ?

- More generally, does it exist a way to play without being continually killed (by the same players) in the most visited locations ? (I would have liked to settle in the Diaguandri system)

Thank you in advance for your answers !

the general rule of thumb is to play in open unless you're going to a CG/engineer/Sol/Shinrarta system. Any of those, Go solo or PG.

[EDIT]

Semi ninja'd :)

Duck is right here. The only game mechanic that effectively protects you from this style of game play is the BLOCK function. You must restart you game (not just exit to main menu) for the function to work, and it simply reduces your chances of being instanced with that person.

Be aware that people you friend in game show up as markers on your galaxy map. This essentially becomes a kill on site target list for players that hunt other players.

Be cautious who you accept friend requests from in game.

Couple of things you can do to protect yourself.

1) If you are in super cruise, and you see another commander as a hollow triangle, it means they have hard points deployed, and in most cases that is a frameshift interdictor. They are not your friend are actively hunting other ships.

2) If you are not interested in being pirated, or participating in pvp gameplay with that player, immediately slow to a stop, and low wake out of supercruise. Find the player's name on the contact tab (menu 2) right click on them and BLOCK them. Then restart your game.

3) If you are entering into major populated systems in SC, cycle quickly through ship targets immediately. Look for other commanders. Hollow boxes are threats, hollow triangles are major threats. If you get a chance to highlight a commander, look at the menu 1 targets to see what subsystems they have on their ship. If they are running a frameshift interdictor, to be safe - BLOCK them. Quit and restart.

There are lots of great people playing this game, both playing PVP and PVE. Unfortunately, FDEV has not created effective game mechanics partitioning in OPEN to safely allow you to meet folks that match your play style.

Good luck out there Commander 07

So Diaguandri, because of being Li Jong-Rui general quarter is a CG system ? If i'm not part of the power player for now, how can I identify a CG system (in game, if possible) ?

............

As an experiment I have been alternating between one week open only then the next week Mobius and repeat... Seen more hollow icons in Mobius than in Open by a very big margin.

Of course I don't play in Open play in CG systems and normally Engineers - though I found myself in Open at Todd's place but never saw anyone in system.

A lot of it depends on your physical location, time of day and of course which systems you are visiting in the game.

No, CG systems are Community Goal systems - e.g. Eurybia last week and HIP 54530 this week.

Assuming they don't have a reason, or that cargo is a better reason than other reasons, may well be coloring your perspective.

Plenty, of varying degrees of contextuality.

I prefer the situational awareness and piloting mechanisms.

The only game mechanic that effectively protects you from this style of game play is the BLOCK function.

This is nonsense.

Indeed, my prefered mechanisms don't require my CMDR to be victimised first, don't require preemptive paranoia, and don't require reinstancing.

You must restart you game (not just exit to main menu) for the function to work, and it simply reduces your chances of being instanced with that person.

Reinstancing is sufficient for block to take effect.

CG = community goal.

There is no CG currently going on at Diaguandri, but it is a popular outfitting system and is relevant to Power Play. These mean it's well trafficked and hostile encounters are to be expected in well-trafficked systems.

Yep - you are not correct.

You can gear up, skill up, hiwake away from where you intended to go - but there really is no Open PVE in Elite Dangerous.

Reinstancing is not sufficient for BLOCK to work. I have tested this dozens of times. The blocked commander will persist in the instance until you do a full restart of the game. Try it in stations. You will see.

I get that you want everyone to play dangerously, but that is simply not everyone's cup of tea. The Block function is the only game mechanic that even approaches this kind of partition.

Using BLOCK is the same as using G5 OC drag drive / corrosive / thermal / etc. PP frags on a noob player. It is available, and it works.

Interesting, now I understand why I received a friend request just after I was shot.

For me there is and I'm not special.

I'll have to test it again.

Not from a contextuality perspective.

I've been to Todd's loads of times without a problem. Then again, on 2 occasions, I've been killed whilst landing. You pays yer money......

Did every single bit of material collection and Engineering (all ~10k rolls worth of it) my CMDR has ever done, in Open, with a properly configured network, and an empty block list.

Have never even come close to being shot down in any Engineer system.

Empathy much?

I can't really imagine what the difficulty would be in being shot down on occasion where being shot down is optional, of negligible consequence, and not a gross context violation.

So no, I do not grasp the perspective well enough to empathise with it.

I've also tried to sympathize with those who find being shot down offensive enough to want to start blocking people for it, but since there is nothing less contextual than solving in-game problems via the menus and because I've never seen anyone get shot down who wasn't an active participant in a fight, or doing something I thought was really dumb, I'm pretty sure that's also beyond my abilities.
