Hardware & Technical Poor FPS with new card

If this very helpful advice (I didnt know about that GPU bug), doesn't solve it, also check your NVIDIA settings to make sure Physx is actually using the GPU and not the CPU.

You have an odd resolution on the main monitor there. Is this the native mode of the screen and do both game and the card have the same setting?

One last question- What's the refresh rate set at and the max on your main monitor?

Yes its the native mode and the refresh rate is 60hz

Perhaps test the graphics card in another game to get a real idea of the performances ?

Would be a good idea but Elite is really the only PC game I play. (I normally play console games but upgraded this machine just for ED)

Stupid question - how are you connecting to your monitor - HDMI from the GPU? Seen a few times monitor connected to the motherboard.

I have a 760 and it has no problem but I do have an I7.

Main monitor is via a standard monitor cable, the 2nd monitor uses a digital one, DVI? - both are connected to the 770 gpu.

I doubt it, any calcs they need in this and possibly any others will be hard coded in Cobra. I would have thought this is where the real savings are to be found.

Ah well, probably can ignore the physx suggestion then. Thanks. :)

Do you normally get a constant 60fps in menus and open space?

I'd flip those cables around as well. Run the main off of the DVI for sure. Might not be significant depending on the monitor, but certainly its a best practice.

I get 60fps in the game menus yes, open space its around 40ish. I really can't switch the cables around as one monitor is larger than the other and I like that as my main/gaming one.

That's unfortunate on the monitor. Guessing it only has a VGA port then, which means it may be pretty old?

My only suggestion is to disable vsync and take the hit of the motion smoothness to gain the extra framerate. Unfortuntely, The monitor makes a bigger difference than it used to. A lot of the guys I know won't use anything less than a 120Hz screen on DVI, but obviously cost is king.

Yeah its an old monitor.

I have two more questions that are related.

1: can anyone who has a 770 please tell me what fps they are getting and if you're on low or high settings?

2: what temp is too high for a gpu? this one was hitting 71c earlier playing Elite and I was a little worried.

I had a 680 which is the equivalent to the 770 but with more power usage. I was maxing the game on high but with drops to about 45 in stations at 1920x1080. I tried it on two different rigs, i7 930 and i7 3930k.

You should be able to hit the same settings as me.

download ccleaner and look at the start up tab and see what is starting up with your computer. Maybe some of those programs are interfering. If you have an antivirus (avast for instance) try turning it off whilst playing or putting it in gaming mode. I don't have any experience with amd cpus since the 2800+ but your cpu shouldn't be a bottle neck.

Worst case scenario reinstall windows.

Sorry I know this is a silly question but you did try right clicking on the ED symbol on your desktop to check if it is using your card as per this bit of Dr Wookie's post:

To fix it, I right clicked the ED icon, and it gave me a choice of what to use when running the game: integrated graphics or GPU. The integrated graphics was highlighted as default.

I'm sure Dr Wookie had issues with ED not using his graphics card and using the built in card instead. Hold on till I have a look for the thread, it might be that......

Edit:

Have a look here, Dr Wookie's post is the last one on the first page:

http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=50275

In fact that whole thread might be of use to you, I know it's a different card but it seems to be similar issues.

Out of curiosity tried to view the above thread-got this:

Commander Jameson's Ghost, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

It's in the PBF.

There's an icon on the taskbar which shows the number of programs that are using the GPU; it looks a bit like a multi-coloured rectangle... maybe. You could see how many processes are running before ED is started, and then check again while it's running. When I did this, the number of processes running was 0 even after ED launched before I fixed it.

To fix it, I right clicked the ED icon, and it gave me a choice of what to use when running the game: integrated graphics or GPU. The integrated graphics was highlighted as default. On second thoughts, meaybe you could just do this bit to see if that helped.

Another issue I have had with other games is the output that I used. My PC has two HDMI outs, and some games will only work properly if I use the HDMI on the graphics card itself

I bought an EVGA 770 GTX to upgrade my old 650 GTX, and I'm not really blown away by the FPS I am getting with this.

I didn't expect it to be 10x better but I'm only getting 30fps in stations and after paying £230 for this card I expected a bit more. (tbh I've never paid more than £100 for any card before but I got the best one I could possibly afford just for ED and well.. i'm really not impressed)

I've reinstalled the drivers today but still I'm lucky to pull 30fps in Aulin station, at Beagle 2 I was getting 32-35 but still considering the money I threw at this and this is really the only PC game I play, I'm not very impressed.

anyone else with this card? what are you getting?

Can you load up the Docking Tutorial and check the fps in station there?

I'm willing to be it will be significantly higher...

Thanks but my onboard gpu is disabled in the bios. (also its so crap I'd barely get 5 fps, let alone 30) ;)

Just changed them, thank you!

It would seem an awful shame not to. I'm going to turn it off later and see what impact it has if any. Saying that, if the game does support it, then it might be worth holding on to that old 650 and offloading the physx work to it and let the new card stretch its legs, if the MB supports two cards.

I turned it off when I was trying to diagnose the screen stuttering and it didn't seem to have any effect at all.

Aye, something definitely wrong somewhere. Got a MSI 770 2GB and it eats ED for breakfast, most of the time I'm well over 150fps, topping out at around 180. (i7 4770, 8GB ram)

I've had an improvement which I'd normally be happy with but still, I'm not getting close to the 150fps the guy above gets ^^

After changes in the bios I'm now getting 40-50fps in big stations, 60-80fps in open space and 70-100fps in some outposts.

a definite improvement but not close to the 150-180.

That'd be your CPU being weaker than his I think.

I did test also and make no discernable difference to me either. Dropped maybe 2-3 fps on the asteroid belt tutorial. I did notice an occasional new stutter at 60fps! (with vsync on)

Didn't see it with vsync off and an fps of min 70, max 120fps, but the tearing was uuuuugly.

Messing with physx made no difference to anything, so the statement about it not being used seems to be correct.

Yeah probably, surprised its such a huge difference though. This cpu is only 4 months old so I'm not in any rush to change it. at least I can play the game at a playable framerate now. :)

Can you check your FPS inside the station on the Docking Tutorial?

I get significantly more fps on the tutorials, this might help us see where the issue is...

I've the same CPU FX6300 with a 2gb 7870 GFX card and I run it in the rift on medium settings with minimal stutter so your cpu does have quite a bit of grunt. :D

I also turned off almost all extras, though I found the most noticeable difference after turning off vsync.

I confess I haven't looked at FPS, simply because the only means I have is running Frapps and I don't want any more running than is necessary.

I get a little stuttering still, but nothing too annoying.
