If anyone were to log into this forum, they could well believe that OPEN is filled to the gills with Gankers. Whilst no one is suggesting that they do not exist, I can't help feel that this myth has been inflated so much as to do more to stop people going into OPEN than the gankers themselves.

Also, we really only seem to get excited about players with players where a ship explodes.

I think there are some things that easily get overlooked, almost taken for granted in the endless threads about ganking.

Buckyball and Fuel Rats are two that spring straight to mind. These player led activities, that take place in OPEN are just 2 examples of decent people, doing decent things in OPEN.

The aspect of player cooperation gets drowned out by the noise of one player creating a din about how they lost their ship.

For the purpose of this thread, I'm not interested in hearing about your ganking experiences, there are plenty of threads you can add to about that, or start your own.

I'm interested in positive CO-OP or OPEN experiences.

I've already mentioned Buckyball and the Fuel Rats, we could also talk about the Distant Worlds projects, the current search being undertaken by the Raxxla lads, searching every system within 200ly of Sol.

Tell me more of these things that you know of. Let us celebrate them and blow the myth that within 5 mins of being in OPEN, in any system on the map, some sod will blow you up.

BTW, I will not be afraid to hit the report button if you want to share your opinion on how we need to fix ganking, as 'Off Topic'

A long time ago I started ED in the wrong mode, and had to check my coffee for opiates when the NPCs started chatting to me about Powerplay.

Another time was during a controlled turmoil ages ago where (the Powerplay Antal group) had to do lots of moving cargo at 4am in the morning. As we went back and forward it was amusing as we o7ed each other and tried not to gum the docks up as we landed.

Other times I've flown out to trouble spots and guided people who were simply lost... its was a bit like the "I'll drop down, follow me" NPCs, except with players.

This! I went out myself on the DSSV Le Guin to scout out the deployment site for the DSSA Glomar Explorer. Structured exploring and friendly competition was great fun, though as the only PS4 player on the expedition I never got to get involved with any of the group activities.

It certainly got me more involved with the ‘community’, helped me find a purpose and direction in the game world, and until that point I never imagined I’d be keeping spreadsheets as a hobby! And I found my first couple of ELW, and left my tag on a little pocket of the Norma Expanse.

I've had a few positive PvP encouters in game. However, unfortunately, those were offset by the negatives.

But you're right about one thing, its not filled with gankers. Gankers get bored hanging around in quiet systems, they need targets, so as long as you stay clear of the popular locations its extremely rare to see a ganker. Hell, its rare to see another CMDR outside the popular locations.

Even SD isn't what it used to be. Once upon a time it was dang near impossible to make the run to Jameson without someone trying to interdict you or someone waiting to ram you near the station. Last few times i've been there didn't see a single hostile commander.

As for positive PvP encouters, outside organized fights, one of my favourites was from very early on. I was in an Orca and the other guy decided to have a go at me in his Asp. He tried to ram me and his shields dropped and he ran away. Ok, not sure how positive that is, but it was damn funny.

Oh, and Distant Worlds 2, i hung around the start system basically letting myself get ganked and laughing at the gankers for doing it. Saying things like "Oh, do it again, hurt me some more". Felt like it was doing the others in open a favour with giving the gankers an extra target who didn't care about getting ganked.

I was going a hauling CG in Open once a couple of years ago, I was flying my Python. I'd made about 5 or 6 trips managing to avoid interdictions but using my Buckyball techniques. But finally my luck failed.

I adopted my standard procedure which is to cut engines and hail chat with "I ain't dun nuffin guv"
The person in a Cutter told me not to move while they scanned my hold. I was packing about 280t of goods and I was told to drop 40t and I would be allowed to go on my way.

I tried to haggle... It didn't work.

But it kind of did, because as I was about to start dropping cargo someone in an Anaconda dropped into the instance and started attacking the pirate. They came over local comms and told me to make a run for it while they provided cover for me. So I did :D

Never got to thank my saviour, but it was one of the best multiplayer experiences I've had in Elite.


Also last night's stream with Arf and this old gem, because it was great.

Apart from PvP?

I had lots of fun doing work for Operation Ida (repairing the Starports). Ida has their own PG of course, and some were doing it in Mobius,
but the biggest thrill was jumping 350 LY with a full cargo hold, earning 50k cr (yes 50.000 cr!) per run and expecting getting ganked at the destination.
Luckily there were very few gankers in the Pleiades at that time, so I never lost a hull to gankers.

Also Thargoid hunting. Best were the times when the Oracle was first attacked, no one really new what to do, and the thrill of the rescues and the combat
was fantastic. But even now it's cool when you find impromptu alliances to blow up thargoids.

Oh yeah, I was doing a Buckyball race around Colonia once and this absolute lunatic interdicted me in an Adder! An Adder of all things, and was trying to demand I hand over cargo. I explained the situation and how they had just ruined that attempt at the race, and they agreed that as I was racing I could go and they wouldn't interdict me again. I seem to remember they did once more though...

What was the person's name... Some crazy fool... Oh yeah, it was @Bigmaec 😅

Another: During the Thargoid attack on Professor Palin's base, we created a wing of four commanders. We just met and we fought together for 3 hours! We were tired, but we shot down a lot of scouts.

Have spent literally years now in open, flying around FAOff with folks in the Newton's Gambit group pushing the limits of the flight engine with the fastest, most agile ships. We've found new ways of doin' things FAOff and it's a constant blast pushing it further all the time.

Sometimes it even all gets put into practice with the Elite Racers events and time trials.

It's the ED version of a precision drift Ken Block Hoonigan Gymkhana, so we call it hooning :)
There's usually beer, wine and spirits involved. Often together.
It is sociable, non-competitive, and very fun.

Oh, and this was the running total as of a couple days ago... ;)
