Am I the only person who is utterly unenthused right now about a generic FPS being shoehorned into my spaceship game?

I've not invested over 1700 hours of my life into a product in the hope that some day it will give me a chance to do exactly what I can do in a multitude of other titles. I have many games already installed on my PC that allow me to run around and shoot people/things.

And I don't think that's what drew most people to this game either.

The reason Elite Dangerous has been a major part of my gaming life for the last 6-7 years is because it's about flying a spaceship around a 1:1 simulation of the Galaxy. I can't experience this any other way. I think it's a real shame that FD seem to be neglecting what makes this game unique and not expanding on what is already it's greatest achievment: our Galaxy it so amazingly simulates.

Personally I've always wanted more of the flying around the Galaxy stuff. Complex lifeforms and habitats, comets, gas giants, oceans, alien weather, little fluffy coulds, a huge ever growing pulsating brain that rules from the centre of the Ultraworld etc.

The only reason I'm going to buy Odyssey (and yeah I'm gonna get it in spite of my kvetching) is for the planets, they look great so far. More worlds to land on, hopefully more spacefaring gameplay mechanics, atmospheric re-entry and aerodynamic flight model perhaps?

I know I'm complaining about something that wont change now, and maybe I'll be wrong. Hopefully FD come up with something exceptional again, but this doesn't feel like a play to Elite's strengths, more an attempt to court broader appeal that forgets what was great about the game in the first place.

Somebody, convince me I'm wrong.

Yeah, i feel the same. But it might be better to focus on the good things.. like new planets, and how we'll finally get a video game interface instead of a 2d windows 3.1 ui. I don't think we can deny those as positive for the space game.

.... I hope they're not being dumb about the aiming reticule being constantly on the screen. There's been some processing on when this is displayed since decades ago. And there's usually an option to configure or turn it off... especially IN FPS GAMES. But its always on with reasons? Wow. Quake 1 all over again?

EDIT: Earlier today i was personally thinking about the last fps i played. The shooting experience was so dismissed for me i can't look forward to it in odysee. I think its age.. im 41 and have shot a lifetime's worth of bullets into human avatars.. click and bang is nothing. In all the games with guns i've enjoyed since early 20's.. it was only to break up the AAA narrative.. ie, uncharted, mass effect, even the not so good tomb raider reboots. I'm really looking forward to station interiors though and new planets. Oh yeah and its totally fine that kids in their teens and 20's of course love shooting and this game is for them, fair enough.

Well, there is most likely not just the PvP part to it - afaik there is PvE content coming with it as well and possibly mission where we can infiltrate a location not just by SRV but on foot - eventually even stealth game play. There is potential in this, but tbh I don't expect too much of it at start - but rather see it as a starting point to possibly something great coming as soon as the new systems run somewhat stable and bugs will be mostly fixed. This will take time and we cannot really expect things to go smoothly, because some bugs just appear in the live server environment and not in a test environment.

i see as well potential to eventually get a system which would allow housing on planets apart from those standard star ports on planets. I don't see that in the near future, but the potential would be there in future. So I will support this move and buy it after launch - when I know that it is somewhat working and not a total mess.

the negative side of this is, we will get a huge amount of new players who will moan and whine on the forum about balance and nerf this and nerf that - sigh.

So far ED had a more adult audience, because the much younger ones have most likely not the patience to play this game and will move on. This will change with Odyssey.

Ditto. I worry CMDRs will end up backwater nobodies in FD's eyes if Odyssey FPS gains tractions and summons the moneybag clouds. Those who particularly enjoy flying spaceships are a tiny minority among gamers in general, so I don't see how importing FPSers is going to do a drop of good for us. CMDRs have been their entire base from day zero and we can't even get basics fixed as-is. As far as I'm concerned, ED is now in it's final state as far as spaceship gameplay goes. This is the first time in my life that I'm hoping an expansion to a game I love doesn't do particularly well. Don't get me wrong, I don't want it to fail, I just don't want it to incentivize turning spaceships into an auxiliary wing of ED. I know many will scoff, saying "It's Braben's baby, he wouldn't do that!", but if Odyssey brought in 1/4 of CoD's numbers, I'd be amazed if he didn't turn Elite into an FPS franchise. For all it's strengths, FD achieves some things I never dreamt a developer would achieve. Unfortunately.

you know, what worries me - Pearl Abyss is acquiring a lot of online games lately - they got EVE (well CCP), they get black desert online now as well, eventually something like that is behind it. CCP started with a more combat centered approach and new threats in EVE when they were going to be bought by Pearl Abyss - the price is not fixed, but depends on success within a certain time frame - so I'm a bit suspicious that Pearl Abyss could be behind this as well.

Have you checked the original kickstarter long-term goals for the game? The FPS is there, and there's a lot more for the future. This isn't going to be just a space sim, but a complete universe experience.

I'm happy that they have been succesful enough to continue working towards it. A lot of games promise these kinds of things and never get to it.

Pearl Abyss are the developers of Black Desert Online, they make the game, Kakao were only the distributors. Kakao have simply decided they no longer want to distribute, probably because it isn't bringing in the money like it used to. The large distributors only go where the big profits are, I doubt if ED even interests them.
