Rookie Mistakes

Running out of fuel, lol you only do it once then learn you mistake (hopefully)

Fuel scoop always unless you absolutely know what you're doing and where you're going. Remember KGBFOAM (fuel scoop-able stars) if you're almost out of fuel and maybe have one jump left of fuel always check what star you're jumping to before you're FSD fully charges up; you don't want your last jump to be to a star you can't fuel scoop.

Also if you're low on fuel (maybe one full jump tops) and they're is no nearby star you can scoop within you're jump range, remember you can always travel much further by switching to economic route and doing short jumps till you can get to a fuel scoop star. Like you can go way further like that instead of just one long jump. You could always call the Fuel Rats, but best to learn how to save yourself first and use them as a last ditch effort when there is no other options.
You can also shut down unnecessary functions in your ship like the shield generator and boosters and weps and such to reduce your fuel usage, I think.

A long time ago before I stopped drinking I pancaked my brand new A rated Asp into the side of big station and got terribly tied up in geometry, pinged around like a pinball and blew up. I was so drunk though, I was absolutely nowhere near the toaster slot, just useless.

Toasted, but no toaster.

I forget limpets when I'm mining all the time. Since he's not currently available to post, I also have no qualms at all in telling you that another Commander I know recently set off mining and discovered he'd forgotten his refinery :D

I also took off a few days back without noticing a T-9 was directly above me, because they're easily missed obviously. Took hard evasive action and flew into the station wall, which since I was flying a shieldless Python at the time resulted in an unscheduled disassembly of said ship and my first rebuy for about two years. Laughed pretty hard.

Yes, but that's not really a solution for when you still have range to get you to a system with a station, or if you have a scoop, a scoopable star.

Disabling modules will reduce drain from your reserve tank (thin line), so yes, that would need to recharge from your main tank (thick line) less frequently, but no, that's not going to make a noticeable difference to jump range. Hyperpace jumps use fuel from the main tank.

When a stranded player calls the Fuel Rats, as long as they are not on emergency oxygen, they will be coached to disable unnecessary modules. This is to extend the duration of their power to their life support, giving the Rats time to locate the player, go through the necessary winging up procedure, and arrive on scene. After delivering fuel, we will advise the player to re-enable their modules, and will observe that occurring to ensure the player is safe again.

If you realise you care getting caught short with not enough fuel to complete your journey, you might consider a diversion to a nearer system that has a station (or if you have a scoop, has a scoopable star. But if that is't possible - re-plotting using economical routing may well extend your fuel range enough to make the difference.

Added later: One caveat here....... The Fuel Rats get a noticeable number of calls to new commanders who get lured by a tasty high paying mission (or by misdirection), in their sidewinder, to Hutton Orbital station in Alpha Centurai (not knowing about the extreme travel time required to reach the station). The small fuel capacity of the sidewinder, normally means they run out of fuel on the long supercruise. IF you find yourself in a situation like that, Disabling modules (Leaving Life support, thrusters, and Frame shift drive on, but disabling power to everything else that you can, might be a valid survival tactic, and might extend your SC range sufficiently to reach the station as long as you realise and do it early enough.

Or having done 23 jumps across the bubble to deliver trade goods, discover that the ship can jump a lot further than 2 or 3 LY by 'finding' fastest route... Not that I could possibly have missed that doing a week of 'trade' between an agri station and another in famine 🤷‍♂️
I did this. It made my first journey out of the Inner Core a lot more of a slog than it ought to have been. I was finally tipped off when it prompted me to jump less than 2Ly.

I am still a rookie, so both of these are embarrassingly recent screw-ups:

When I first bought my Asp, I forgot to check that it had a docking computer installed. I launched, and found I wasn't going anywhere. So for the first time in my career, I had to leave the station and then return, without computer assistance. I managed it, but it wasn't elegant. I am a trader rather than a skilled pilot, and it shows.

And now I've figured out semi-automated fire from turrets, I'm getting a bit bolder in taking on combat missions, but I made a bad mistake the other day. I took a massacre mission, flew to the first target area, and scanned the assembled ships, looking for one I was confident of taking on. Normally there's no honour among thieves, and the others in a mixed pirate group will just let me peel off their weakest member for a fight. But this time, I'd forgotten that I was still carrying some salvaged cargo from my previous mission. So as I opened fire on a Cobra, the Python next to it scanned me, demanded my cargo, and immediately started shooting, as did the other two in the group. Boom. One very costly rebuy for a trivial error.

....I'd forgotten that I was still carrying some .... cargo from my previous mission. ...
Been there, done that :) (or more exactly my other 'Main' commander account did that!!!!!, and probably some 1600hrs in game time ago...).

I'd finished a mission late the previous evening. Loaded up on a small amount of goods as not to run home empty. Was tired, forgot to sell the goods.

Next evening logged on, did some outfitting and went to do a little bounty hunting. Arrived in the resource site. It was all going so well up until that point...

Deployed hardpoints.. Ship shut down (I didn't know about power priorities back then) Whilst trying to sort that out, noticed a couple of messages from pirates flashing up (but didn't read them, as of course they'd scan me and move on, and I could deal with them later - Muahahahahaha!!!).

Of course I'd forgotten about the cargo that I'd not offloaded and suddenly I had four pirates shooting at my ship, which I'd only just started restoring power to...

Needless to say... that day didn't end well for my other main commander.

Not really a mistake but a lesson learned, I took a wing delivery mission. It was around 5,000 units for around 15m which at the time, was a fair heap of cash to earn in one go. I stripped out the shields on my Python, loaded it with cargo racks and started to process. I knew pirates would come, but 2 or 3 interdictions each run (one system jump). Never think, 'This shouldn't take that long'.

Trying out 4 engineered Packhounds for the first time. I'd only ever tried the CG Seeker Missile Rack before so wasn't expecting such a big difference.

I kept the fire button mashed down and enjoyed the light show as all 4 Packhounds went up like a firework display. My Cutter lit up too, the temperature was above 250% before you could say: "Cease fire!". I limped back to Demolition Unlimited for repairs and Liz nearly died laughing.

I was making a video about starting out in Elite Dangerous. It was my first attempt at doing instructional videos. I had a bunch of hours in the game at that point, and felt pretty confident.

I was in the starting Sidewinder, explaining how to land at a coriolis station. I'm talking away, explaining how the station is laid out and how big the "slot" really is, and during it all I forgot to ask for docking permission.

So my first video was of me backing rapidly out of the slot to avoid destruction.

I left it in the video, as a reminder to myself :p

In the mists of Noob antiquity, long long ago, I had "grinded" like a grindy thing for DAYS to get to Duke so I could spend ALL my CR on a shiny new everything -"E"- rated Cutter.

Thought it handled like a brick, but I could uprate it once I sold all that lovely cargo I got at the same time (I forget what), just a few Ly away in the next system.

Needless to say, I was interdicted and destroyed in about 30 seconds on arriving by an NPC. Back in the Sidey with about 15,000CR. Happy Days!!

Tinkering with my Anaconda's load out at a planetary port, not long after getting it, and then taking off without checking the power load.

Thrust up into the sky - engage FSD - power drops and loads of modules go off line. So busy trying to get the FSD going again, that I miss the fact the thrusters are offline too, and I'm accelerating - posterior first towards the ground - by the time I work it out I'm staring at the rebuy screen.

I sometime imagine the ship sticking out of the ground on the planet like a monolith - a monument to my stupidity!
