2 Qs: Quick safe creds, and data scanning a base??

I took an assassination job that led me through some cool hoops of contact this person and follow that person and get data... until I was told to connect with a data terminal on a planetside base! I got to under 1km in my ship, my data scanner was "in range" but it never connected before the base blew me out of the sky :(
There is nothing in the mission info that says I need a vehicle, so I'm assuming I should be able to scan from my ship?
Anyway, any tips will be good for the future, I'm abandoning this mission.
...because now I'm at a detention base with MUCH less than my insurance requirements after rebuying my ship and paying fees! About 8 or 10 jumps from my home system!!
Kinda scared of something happening before I get "home" and not able to afford the rebuy again.
Suggestions for making safe money as I trek across unfamiliar space back to my home system?

you can scan those from your ship with the data scanner. some commanders do it quick in - quick out, before the transgressions turns you wanted. that requires knowing the layout for the stellements (means - not the regular planetary scan jobs).

an alternative approach is to disable defenses by scanning data points around the base timed in a fixed succession - i have only done so in a srv, but i'm sure you could do the same in a ship - but that won't work inside the transgression timer without turning wanted, only at anarchy bases.

third approach is to have a shieldtanky ship, or similar, which can either stand the attacks or destroy station defenses/nuke them.

cmdr dja keeps a repository of maps for all planetary settlement layouts.

Carry no cargo, and have no missions accepted.

Jump to system.

Scan it fully with fss.

Jump to new system.

Scan it fully with fss.

Sell all scan data.

As long as you follow the first step fully,, you will have no problems....

Do this for a few systems, traversing around the bubble. You will then have some credits back.

Just watch your fuel levels, or buy a fuel scoop.

The long term solution to these is get familiar with the locations and orientations (they are occasionally shielded on one side) of power generators in these places. Shoot out all of those and the guns stop firing. Of course, if you're dealing with 5 of the things, the quick in/out method in a fast, well shielded ship (iCouriers are perfect for this sort of thing) is preferable.

I also find on getting out of there, flying sub-200m and finding a crater rim or valley to put a physical barrier between you and the base defences helps as well. Depends on your environment.

Always have your escape plan sorted if you're infiltrating somewhere.

If you are short on cash exploration data is nice & easy, and as safe as the game gets. Filter the galaxy map for agricultural economies, fit a DSS (Detailed Surface Scanner) and map the earth-likes for cash, sell 20ly away from the scanned system. As Viscera mentions, a fuel scoop is a good idea & not carrying cargo or having missions running will minimise the chances of NPC interdiction.

Always have your escape plan sorted

Always this :)

1km is still too far away. For planetary scan points you need to get up close and personal, within meters. And be quick about it. My usual approach is to go in kamikaze and faceplant my Courier directly into the data post, scan it and boost out asap. Not elegant but it's fast enough to avoid any fines/bounties.

You can do either. Both your ship and SRV are equipped (as default) with a datalink scanner. On the SRV, it works across a slightly larger range, but is easier to use from turret view (for better aiming). On the ship, you need to deploy hardpoints and get at close range (<< 100m) to the data terminal, select the terminal and run the scanner. In both cases, the datalink scanner needs to be mapped to a fire button inside a fire group (no default mapping).

I prefer to use my ship for that - I have a dedicated fast Viper for these jobs. In general, smaller ships are better for that. On a 'conda, the scanner is mounted so far back from the nose that you can't even scan the terminal when the ship's nose is pushing into it, even if you can fit between the buildings.

My usual procedure is to fly by/circle the base until I can get the terminal in my contacts. That's usually (with my loadout) a few hundred meters out from the trespassing zone. Then, from that position (usually needs multiple attempts from different angles) try to find the location of the terminal at the base as well as clear paths for going in and getting out again.
Retreat out of the trespass zone again (if necessary), then go in on the chosen path as fast as possible - you get some time between entering th trespass zone and the base actually declaring you hostile, issuing a fine and starting to shoot. If you're fast, you can get in and out again before being fined - I usually only manage to complete the scan, but get the fine (and shot at) while going out again.
When you're coming nose to nose with the terminal (with the scanner deployed and selected), the targeting reticle will flash up once when you get in range. Hit (and hold) the scanner fire button until the scan completes. If I remember to do so (rarely), I also hit silent running and trigger my chaff launcher.
When the scan is complete, turn tail and boost out. The closer to the ground you stay, the more difficult it is for the ground defenses to hit you. And the faster you are out of range, the less time for the (parked or circling) local defense ships to hunt you.

If I did this as part of an assassination mission, I usually switch ships to something with a bit more punch then. And every now and then (when I remember to do it - or the accumulated fines become inconvenient) I visit an Interstellar Factor with my naughty ship and let them clear it.

Sure. Visist e.g. https://www.spansh.co.uk/riches , enter your data and FSS/DSS the systems on the resulting list. And travel in solo or a non-PvP private group until you've cashed in the exploration data.

I'll second the notion of FSS and than DSS as the quickest way to gather cash early game. When i started an account fresh last July, i went that road while on tour to the pleiades (which will unlock another engineer).

another option would be tagging along system security in HIGH Ressource Extraction sites, if you are ready for some combat. Attack, what system security attacks, and get the bounties from their work.

Sounds like good advice! But what's FSS?
Fortunately I happened to have a fuel scoop on my ship when I was blowdedup! So, I'm good there! whew

WOW! A lot of great advice from everyone!! A lot more than I expected from what I thought was a pretty dumb question.
Thanks everyone! This really helps!

You can scan the beacons from your ship. 99% of all times you get the mission one in your contacts if you are closer than 3km. To successfully scan you need to be closer than 100m and in analysis mode with the scanner in the fire group, weapons deployed. Generators you can target also from 3km and blow them up from there or ram them and as a bonus you don't get a bounty if you fast enough.
There are "disable generator" missions to +++ settlements which don't follow the same procedure. The target pylon doesn't resolve as a contact until you are closer than 50m and you need to be closer than 30m for a successful scan.

Small example. I destroy the generator(only 1 at this base) first as it disables the base defenses. I also did 100s of missions to that base so I know there what is to get things done fast.

If you don't have enough cr for rebuy I would go the safe route and do the road to riches style exploring in Solo.

System scanner - check out the video above and have a play with it in supercruise. Zero the throttle though, and still have your escape route plotted!
I don't see a video above, but I found a couple on YT.... OH! I had no idea. I thought Discovery Scanner was all you needed to do to scan a system and then Planetary Scanner for more info! :O Thank goodness I hadn't started my trek back yet before I learned about FSS... I would have been pretty miffed at myself had I gone through several systems just Discovery Scanning LOL

Apologies I wasn't very clear and bummer on the video, but do check one or more out.

There are basically three types of scanning and two scanners. The first is the discovery scanner that you are good with for basic "honking" of a system. The same scanner does the fss scanning, where you go into analysis mode, then fss mode, and you have to resolve all the bodies in the system. This is weird and contentious as a process, but have a watch them a go, and it'll begin to make sense.

The second scanner type and third scanning process is the surface scanner as you know. Again check out a video if you're unsure, but it's a lot simpler than the fss imho! You have unlimited probes, and the big money planets to scan for quick cash are water world's, earth likes, ammonia worlds, and anything terraformable to be very brief.

Have a play with these. The first scanner is in the ship regardless, but the dss is an extra module. Hope this helps buddy, but feel free to ask more if needed :)
