Odyssey trailer - thoughts?

So the pre-alpha Odyssey gameplay trailer is out.
You see three devs raiding a base then flying away.

My thoughts:-

Animation is poor. Players walking are just pure cringe! It’s uncomfortable to watch.
FPS element looks worse than, well, every single other FPS game out there.
Bases will be procedurally generated - does this mean the same old same old scenario again and again?
Lots of unrealistic elements to the trailer, particularly the NPC behaviour. And I’m pretty sure this will get dull quite quickly.
Oh, and no VR.
Gotta say, I was kind of neutral about Odyssey. After seeing this, I could not care less for it at all!
FDev have got it very very wrong in my opinion. Start with the ships. That’s why we play, to fly space ships. Start there, let us walk in our ships. Let me see where I sleep, where I live, all that stuff. I want to see the cargo hold. Let me look out of all the windows that aren’t part of the cockpit.
What about manual ship repair? Let me float outside my ship and fix that dodgy laser that keeps breaking down.
All that stuff!
That’ll do for Odyssey 1. Then build from there.
Sorry FDev, you’ve dropped a ball here...

Well I’m glad your not in charge of anything because that sounds boring as.

Sorry but an FPS will sell a lot more copies of the game that Elite Dangerous Odyssey Sims will.

Still if you have your heart set on sleeping in your space bed then Star Citizen might be right up your street. You’ll have to fork out a lot more money than Elite will ever ask for but it will show you what real janky animations look like.

Edit: As to your question I was indifferent before the trailer and I’m still indifferent.

What they have shown is 3 squagillion times more interesting than looking at a virtual bed.

Taken on its own yes, but compared to every other FPS game out there that people can play instead, it’s awful.

I don’t have my heart set on sleeping in my space bed.
My point is that FDev do some things well and some things poorly. Space flight they do well. But FPS demonstrably falls in to the latter category. I mean, look at how the players walk for a start!
I don’t agree with you that an FPS will sell more. If people want an FPS, there’s a myriad other options out there that are way, way better than this

Thanks for creating a new thread to grace us with your opinions, the rest of us weren't so important and just used all the other threads.

Thanks for your input

Have to agree. I was expecting a mediocre FPS, but EDO looks several generations behind. EDO is not going to be drawing in much of a new crowd. Hopefully there is more to dirtlegs than FPS, but it's worrying that is all they have to show.

That would be true if the FPS gameplay was competitive with other offerings. Watching EDO's FPS play gives me flashbacks to Goldeneye on N64, and that's honestly not hyperbole. You can't just drop into a thriving market and expect success simply because a lot of money is moving in it. With a thriving market comes expectations of meeting the market standards, and not a soul on earth who plays FPS would watch that trailer and say it looks even mediocre. Even if my main account gets Odyssey, I see no reason I shouldn't log off and play one of the FPS games in my Steam library rather than engage in EDO FPS when I don't feel like piloting.

ED players will, largely, be able to gloss over this and purchase EDO. Gamers that never picked up ED because they aren't into flight games, but do play FPS, are going to look at EDO with a face of pure, crystallized cringe. Anyone who thinks otherwise is in denial or hasn't played FPS since the 90s.

It says everything that your strawman for spacelegs/ship interiors is standing in place staring at a bed.

TLDR - FPS is confirmed bad, hopefully EDO brings some decent exploration gameplay.

You’ve not even played it yet and already decided it’s DOA?

My first thoughts on first watch...

•The animation for the other players running was kind of sub par. As I watched further it seemed better though.. Not a game breaker for me

•the graphics to me look like ps4/xbox 1 level. not really better than I would expect for those consoles at least. Apex Legends/CoD Warzone quality, so not terrible. As this is pre-alpha (and I'm on console) I'm not going to complain.

•the mission shown seems like some good fun and I definitely look forward to doing this with my squad mates. Also I'm hopeful (not a good idea, I know) that this is just one of a lot of various scenarios you may find yourself in for Odyssey missions.

•The surfaces looked slightly better than what I have on ps4 which as already stated seems like the same as horizon. As its pre-alpha I am assuming this may improve or it could just be that area 🤔

I'm still excited for the it. I might not be buying it at full price when it releases unless otherwise forced to by not being able to play with squad mates who did get it.

Not happy about Odyssey and Horizon player segregation at all. That is much more of a deal breaker than anything they could show me in a video

It's PRE ALPHA.

Anyone who plays modern FPS can watch it and tell you the FPS portion is indeed DOA. Without playing it, yes. Hopefully there is more to EDO, I don't see why they can't do exploration right.

2 years in and a couple-ish months to go. It's not getting a makeover from what they've shown, they are wrapping up.

I’m going out on a limb here and will say that Frontier have very few expectations that they’ll be able to compete with the big boys.

Thats ok though because they’ll still sell quite a few copies. Some of those new players will stay and some will go but to quote well know thespian Charlie Sheen I already got your money dude.

They’ll still have a captive audience of players they can sell space skirts and fuzzy dice to.

who knows one day in the future we might even get to walk around our ships.

Suggest you read [VR] here_it_comes posts above. He nails it!
People who already own ED are going to buy it yes, but this isn’t going to draw the FPS crowd to this game, it’s not good enough for that.

It's PRE ALPHA.

Do you really think it’s going to improve that much? We’re NOT FAR FROM RELEASE...

Yeah, that's pretty dismal.

You seem to be working on the assumption that it needs to be a modern fps and or competitive with them. Have you seen the amount of crap FPS games out there that do well despite glaring issues with animation, aging graphics and crap gameplay loops?

Frontier will do fine.

Show me another FPS that let's me fly a spaceship through 400 billion star systems when I'm not specifically engaging in combat and I'll agree with you. Show that on console and I'll pay your rent for a month
