Odyssey trailer - thoughts?

Looked pretty good to me. Land your ship, get out on foot, bask in the scale of everything. Occasionally engage in some pew pew.
Plenty of other things I would rather have first, but what I saw was definitely on the list of things the game should have eventually, so all's good.

I would have liked some demonstration of the impact of both atmospheric drag and gravity, though with the kind of thin atmospheres we'll encounter and gravity at .5g I realize those effects wont be too evident.

For an alpha it was actually pretty good, now is there room for improvements? sure it's an alpha!

So what was my take, well it was not a 100% playthrough, it was stitched together of several playthroughs, so that alone is difficult to evaluate.

My takeaway is as follows;

1.Animations need more work
2.NPC's reactions was a bit dull, I'm sure this can be tweaked as we have seen with the ships AI, I remember when MoM was tweaking the AI back in the day.... Oh all the salty tears LOL.
3.Weapons looks unfinished, sorry FDEV but they look toyish please pump up the volume.(they are too clean, looks plastic)
4.Interiours looks ok, I guess down the line there will be more bases where you need to go deeper inside. POSITIVE
5.Glowing Cyan NPCS, not good, looks arcady, when the shield is activated, just do the same mechanic as on the ships, you see it activate and when it's hit.
6.HUD, looks good, clean with the info you need that's a POSITIVE

7.Missing a real entry point on the ships, at least let us enter a door before we fade into the ship.

That's about all I got out of this game play, and I'm very positive and looking forward to play it soon.

Their trailer should have been along the lines of a ship setting down on an unexplored world, with a team of explorers/scientists getting out, some on foot, some in new land vehicles, showing them going on to demonstrate the new genomics and salvaging roles*, with sweeping panoramas of the new landscapes in the background and amazing new sunsets. That would have sparked the imagination far more than FPS scenarios that look way behind the times and showcase how poor their AI awareness and gunplay is.

Elite built its reputation on ships, exploration and its 1:1 scale galaxy that Fdev were once so proud to boast about. That's where their development time should have gone.

Odyssey FPS is purely to draw in the here today gone tomorrow customers who'll buy it just because its taping into the massive FPS market. Once the hype dies down and they've raked in the cash, the twitch kids will be off elsewhere, leaving the diehards and loyal Elite devotees left - as always waiting for Fdev to throw them a bone, as they're always last to be catered for.

(*but I suspect even these will be incredibly shallow if all their dev focus has been on FPS gameplay).
It all depends, take ArmA, people are still playing the same scenarios day in and day out because the foundation of the game is so well made despite all the bugs and annoying game issues.

There’s a lot of passive aggressives around.
Trying to have a sensible discourse with people offering different opinions and you see some contributors adding sarcastic and derogatory comments.
It’s just so unnecessary.

I quite enjoyed the mission playthrough and the following (finally!) talk about everything they have been unable to discuss to date.

As we were told by the CMs that they 'died' several times in the making of the movie we saw, it is no surprise it was patchy - I guess if the AI level had been e.g. L6 we'd not have had a playthrough to watch ;)

As a personal perspective, I really am not bothered that the FPS looks like something from years ago, rather than whatever tat is 'popular' today, but that is probably as I like the FPS games from years ago 🤷‍♂️

Now it is just wait a few weeks to see exactly what the alpha brings, no matter how 'bad' others consider the content we have seen to date, I am genuinely looking forward to playing it, it is more content in the game - which is a big positive to me, even if I haven't exhausted the current content...

Sadly, the release of the footage is purely to entice the pewpewer's in the gaming community.......as pewpew sells units.

They stressed multiple times that this scenario was PRE ALPHA gameplay, leading me to think it's still being worked on - though with only a couple of weeks left before Alpha release, it must be close to the finished product.

I too would have liked to see at least some other footage of lesser pewpew scenario's, but I'll probably have to wait until Alpha release for that;)

Looks ok to me.

I have more belief that it will add to my elite experiance since watching that.

I have thoughts on why they did certain actions the way they did in the video, that would make sense.

Not drawing attention to themselves on approach to avoid drawing a mass of guards around the door when they begin to open it for example...

Overall, it looked ok and makes me think its something that I will buy, as it adds to my elite experiance.

I do wonder how these missions will play out alone... I dont have friends online all the time I am ingame...

At the end, I was also kind of wishing they had a SRV taxi waiting to pick them up... Where one could jump in the turret shkoting the goliath, and one could drive... Rather than that run to tbe blue light... Maybe a couple of years wait for that lol.

The devs already said a player with basic gear is gonna have a bad time of it going up against a player with engineered game and even used the term bullet spongy.
Well if that's the case, then my enthusiasm for this update has just nosedived into the ground.

iu

"Bullet-sponging" is one of the primary things that eventually killed my enthusiasm for spaceship combat in this game, pity they have to add this to the FPS side of things as well. I can see it already, suits with multiple stacked shield boosters and shield bank cells that never end. Fun, fun, fun!!!

FPS is the last thing I'm interested in. There may already be many FPS out there but I only occasionally play one – may it be great or mediocre… The alpha preview didn't look as if was on the "great" side.
Hope that they make other interesting "space game" use of the new technology!

So the pre-alpha Odyssey gameplay trailer is out.
You see three devs raiding a base then flying away.

My thoughts:-

Animation is poor. Players walking are just pure cringe! It’s uncomfortable to watch.
FPS element looks worse than, well, every single other FPS game out there.
Bases will be procedurally generated - does this mean the same old same old scenario again and again?
Lots of unrealistic elements to the trailer, particularly the NPC behaviour. And I’m pretty sure this will get dull quite quickly.

I don't expect an Indian restaurant to be a world-class bar. But it is nice to be able to have a beer with my curry.

I don't expect the on-foot sections of Elite Dangerous to compare favourably with dedicated AAA first-person games. But I sure am looking forward to getting out of my chair and doing stuff, feeling like I have travelled somewhere and disembarked, and the added variety of taking new types of missions from a different perspective.

But that is the same as the current game, a G5 Murdership will always present a little bit of challenge to a stock Hauler... 🤷‍♂️
Ironically you are making my point - this is the very thing that killed my joy of spaceship combat in ED. Obviously a Hauler cannot defeat a Corvette in combat, but what takes it into ridiculous land is the "G5" part (along with SB, SBC, and HRP stacking). When it takes me all day to destroy an Eagle in my Mamba in a CZ because the Eagle is made of Vibranium, that's neither realistic nor fun IMO.

And let's be real - there is no direct comparison between a Hauler and a Corvette when you are talking about two humans on the ground, unless we are able to play as 5 year old children fighting Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime. Unless of course we are able to engineer Tony Stark Iron Man suits... But even Iron Man doesn't have infinite shields, LOL.

If I bought a G5 everything Hauler against your stock one, which stands the better chance of survival?

What did you want/expect from the first person part of Elite Dangerous (specifically a settlement raid, as in this example)?
I agree with most points in Karrde's post, and personally I expected a lot more polish, less than 3 months before this rather expensive DLC launches. Various bugs aside, the main game is a pretty polished affair technically, what I've seen last night looked like it was the first test build they came up with after the initial design phase. I'm a bit concerned now I have to admit, pre-Alpha or otherwise.

EDIT - to give just one example, the fact that there are either no shadows, footsteps in the sand or character models floating above ground/shadows not linking up which is so clearly visible mere seconds into the video makes me scratch my head a little in terms of how Frontier thought it was a good idea to keep those issues in the first proper demo they decided to show us. If it's really just a case of pre-pre-pre-pre-Alpha-footage-don't-worry-folks-will-be-fixed then perhaps marketing-wise it would've been better to comment on those glaring visual issues and point this out instead of pretending to be a space ranger and act as if this was normal.

They also stated that they got killed many, many times.
I would have thought by that statement that it took them quite a lot of 'takes' just to
1. Get to the mission building without attracting any attention, to keep their health at max, to be able to escape.
2. Probably took a lot more 'takes' to actually shoot their way out.....I noted the option used was to basically 'leg it' to the Settlement gate, then turn & fight, then 'leg it' to the Ship.

Assuming they'd have recorded every attempt, I'd loved to have seen some 'blooper' footage of their many failed attempts.

Possible use of 'Dev Mode' to give them 'God Mode' protection?

I'm not sure which argument you are trying to win, since my original statement is "my enthusiasm for this update has just nosedived into the ground." Nothing you say will change that, so just accept it. You're more than welcome to enjoy your engineered bullet-sponge targets, I won't hate you for it - it's just not the type of game I'm interested in.
