Odyssey trailer - thoughts?

Again, as you were careful to illustrate, the demo was made on a very old build, and the CM's were polite enough to mention that the more recent build that had been playing on was vastly different, but, of course, that is a point easily glossed over if one didn't care to watch the stream, or if it doesn't 'fit' with their narrative.
Which makes it an odd thing to show at this stage.

Frontier: We're not ready to show anything about that yet.
Forum: Oh, come on! You need to communicate more. Talk to us, show us things, be more open! We can take it! Treat us like adults. Game X shows us new stuff all the time.

Frontier: Here's some pre-alpha gameplay. It's pretty rough around the edges, it's not representative of the final product but it gives you a rough idea.
Forum: It's so odd that you would show us unfinished gameplay.

You are still ignoring all the information that was offered to you a few posts ago.
So let's say the complaint is instrumental since you've avoided thinking point blank about the information that the DEVs released after the film.
Quite the opposite.

I have considered what has been said, but it does little to convince me of what will be delivered... if anything, it makes it worse. Why?
Because I have to ask myself why, this late in the process, are FDev demonstrating an older version? Why on earth would they do that if the newer version is better?
It can only be because A. the newer version isn’t that much better after all, or B. it isn’t ready to show.
I can’t think of any other reason - and both worry me.

If this demo came out three months ago we would be aligned. I wouldn’t have even set this thread up. But now, this late on...?

Yes. This

Fortunately we are only 23 days from playing the alpha, from which we shall be able to draw our own conclusions on its 'usefulness'
Indeed. Let’s hope they pull it off.
We all want that!

You're expecting this forum to be logical, not jump to conclusions and keep emotion out of their discussion? What's wrong with you?

I'm still waiting to see the other aspects Odyssey has to offer. As such, the trailer did very little for me. Now, while I don't mind committing the occasional act of senseless violence, the clip we saw didn't invoke any urges to do so.

But I'll keep my expectations firmly at zero (one way or the other) and only decide after the official release if it's yay or nay for me.

It could be any number of reasons.

For example. The most recent build might (or might not) have better physics, visuals, AI, etc. but the network code hasn't been updated to support it yet, so it can't be played multiplayer. Or the new AI is done, but is running on a test build and hasn't been integrated into the main version yet. Or absolutely anything.

I wouldn't read too deep into anything, positive or negative, at this point. With us knowing next-to-nothing about FDev's workflow or internal processes, inferring the quality of the final product based on guesswork about what would be normal if X sweeping assumption about the development is correct, is borderline Dunning-Kruger.

Well I admire some of your optimism, and if Frontier really are going for an undersell/overdeliver approach and we'll all be pleasantly surprised when the Alpha releases then fair play to them.

My cynicism which developed over the last decades due to various high profile disappointments where the opposite approach was taken (and not least Frontier's QA track record) prevents me from sharing those sentiments.

We'll find out in a few weeks I guess, and I'll be the first to admit my concerns were unfounded.

I shall livestream my meanderings (and any crashes, naturally) on the release day, so those who do not play will be able to make their judgement - no commentary from me, just the DLC being played (badly in all likelihood, but so what?)
Your commentary would be the highlight of the show, so do reconsider 😁 also, streaming where? Linky plz.

💯 This.

I am comfortable with the fact they were able to land on a pad and walk in as they were friendly with the faction. The blue effect on the npcs needs to go, its awful. The problems for me was imagining this as a solo player. I was anticipating the possibility of using a ship cam (or other means) to get a base lay out and terrain, so I could plan entry and particularly escape, eg using the cutter to create an exit out of the generator room and then being able to escape on foot with some cover. Instead it looked like you have no option but to hope your shields work and tough it out with the NPC's while legging it across flat ground with no cover. I am not saying the base should be surrounded by trees, but there should be at least one tactical way in/out with at least some cover.

The best part of that trailer was the beginning and end of the in game footage, showing the Chieftan taking off and landing.

The rest looked a bit.. meh.

Things change though, it's still only Alpha.

How is that even relevant?

FDev has created “top-tier space flight models and full galaxy simulations with surprising ease”.

Yep! I’m with you there! What an amazing game ED is.

But... so what? What’s your point? That this means they can create a poor FPS and that’s ok? Or that their FPS is also top-tier?
It was sarcasm.

Put simply - Cosmo is slagging off the FPS (pre alpha) and comparing it to Killzone2, a dedicated FPS corridor shooter, and ME2, a dedicated 3rd person shooter/rpg, and claiming EDO should be like one of those.

I was sarcastically pointing out those games don't have a 1:1 sim of the galaxy included.

Entirely different games with different requirements and purpose.

I like it. It looks rough around the edges but hopefully, it will be polished up nicely before launch.
A bunch of new missions with new layers. Professions with an expanded scope/more ways to do things. Scavenging, exploration. Man, it will be awesome.

People here are super negative. Everything is bad. If you really dislike it don't buy it. Play something else. There are so many games out there. Not sure why you got to play this one and still hate it.

We're not negative because we hate the game. Rather, we want it to be the best it can be. ED is primarily a space sim, but due to Odyssey, FPS gameplay is shoehorned into it. Once FPS gamers try it and find it's not up to par with contemporary standards, their feedback / user reviews won't be pretty.

Of course the avid FPS players reviews woudn't be good... I doubt they would actually be buying on release day if it isn't better than whatever FPS tat is "Flavour of the Week" at the time as the alpha would have been slammed by the gaming press beforehand anyway...

Exactly what is "The best the game can be"? when there are so many diverse playstyles who each wish for the game to provide content 'exclusively' to their taste... You and I know there is no way to please everyone so a 'vanilla' (allegedly full of placeholders - according to some) game is literally "THE BEST" we shall get as it doesn't upset everyone.

So, now we've managed to cut through the strawmen, what is there left to discuss?

All kidding aside, the way death and murder is handled in the game isn't satisfactory, in my opinion. Even using your joke and turning it into gameplay would be an upgrade to the experience; yeah, that random guy you killed had a son, and he's coming after you now.
And the NPC's can repeat canned text like 'We must save my family...'
