Glad to see this resolved. But just for completeness' sake:
While you can't supercruise to a different system -- without a Jump no star will be generated by the game -- you can use the FSD to shorten the distance if the plotted jump exceeds your max range. Provided you have enough fuel, which isn't a given.
So if the distance is 6ly and your range is only 5.5ly, you could SC for 0.5ly and then jump.

That said, the game generally is forgiving enough to offer multiple easy solutions for any pickle you might get yourself into -- you first have to know about them, though. ^^

I'll have to double check, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't work this way.

You can burn off fuel in SC to lower ship mass and slightly extend jump range, but I beleive the jump is calculated from the center of the system you're currently in.

This is patently false. Tried and tested many times. You can be within kilometres of where the next system star should be and the jump will still be the total distance from source star to destination star.
It can feel like it works, because to actually use max range jump, you need to burn fuel until you have just enough fuel for that one jump, not (much) more.
