Any tips on making money with it?

I only have 20 MCr to my name and she has 500 trit on her tanks.

Well... just remember you have to pay your weekly maintenance and it seems you'd better start hauling big time to increase your account ballance otherwise your FC might get decomissioned.

Eh, if there's 20m in the bank, that's the first two weeks covered, plus rebuy on OP's ship. It does need to be deposited int he carrier though, to cover upkeep, though that won't tick for another 5 days. Plenty time to do a handful of passenger missions to stockpile a year's worth of upkeep.

I'd recommend reserving enough credits in it to cover a few months of upkeep at the very least though, before actually buying any modules for it. So that you don't buy anything oonly to wipe out its balance and push the upkeep cost up together. I made sure to have enough set aside in the carrier budget for a year's worth of upkeep with all the modules I plan on installing, before even starting to save up to install a single one of them.

Well, even thoguh it's not what it was, mining can net you quite a bit of coin. See if you can find a mettalic rings outside the bubble so you don;t have pirate interruptions and grab as much precious metal as possible: platinum, osmium and painite.

Not with that little money in the bank.

Usually, making money with a carrier involves in going to the week's favourite mining spot and advertising to buy whatever-they-are-mining-there for a reasonable price. Then jump to the current high sell system and sell that stuff below what the station is paying for it.

Alternatively, do the same with engineering mats - there's always a few people on the lookout for Modular Terminals or Meta-Alloys. But still you'll need to stock up first.

This will have to wait a while then

So how do I go about this? First I was thinking about setting up a minex Phantom, that would call the FC up when he's full, but that doesn't seem to work.
So now I'm thinking:
  • Get the DBX out to scout.
  • Call up the FC when he's found a decent spot.
  • Mine with the Phantom
Do I need to stuff a Type 9 full of limpets or can I carry them on the FC?

If you have installed/enabled rearm and repair, you can purchase limpets straight from your FC.

On a further note, we normaly learn whatever we can about an expensive asset before investing all your resources in it... you might see in advance that this might not be a good idea for the moment.

Oh wow bought an FC with only 20mill to spare? xD

My FC has an upkeep of about 27million a week, but I have a lot of facilities enabled. That said I still make a ton of profit on it, just keeping it where it is and advertising on occasion. The biggest thing I'd recommend doing though if your buying/selling to make a profit, make sure you use the inara tracker to keep your FC's deals updated!

I've been running a thread in lore/roll play section for a while to advertise my mining shop, check out my thread, it has the location of a platinum hotspot inside the bubble you can use. If you dont have commodities enabled on your ship yet, feel free to sell to mine till ya get your money up!

So you bought the carrier and then took a selfie for the avatar?;)
Are you sure you want to discuss avatars? 🧐

A carrier and only 20M? What happens if you fly a ship and get killed without a rebuy? You won't be happy.
Don't worry, got my Robigo Runner and kitted it out for mining. Have 50MCr already.

Thanks for the advice.

The FC won't "passively" generate money for you in most cases (although there are a few FCs out there who apparently make a decent amount of money with buy and sell orders).

Consider your FC a force multiplier: it will improve your capabilities in making money by mining, bounty hunting, exploration etc.

Mining: Park your FC close to a known double or triple hotspot and fill the cargohold with the desired ore. wait until you see appropriate prices on inara/eddb and try to sell the ore for max profits

bounty hunting: park your FC close to a HazRes, Compromised Nav Beacon or Combat Zone and take your combat ship out for a ride. Due to the close proximity you can rearm, repair and refuel in a very short time and be back in action with minimum delays. Remember that bounties you hand in on your FC are 12.5% less than if you hand them in at a station. (the 25% reduce splits in 12.5% that go directly into your carriers bank account, 12.5% just go "poof" into thin air and are "lost")

exploration: you can easily travel thousands of light years away from the bubble and use your carrier as a mobile base of operations. you can constantly hand in exploration data and thus generate a constant stream of income (instead of hoarding many months worth of exploration data that you hand in only after you made it back to the bubble)

The other advantage is that you can now easily switch between game loops. if you're bored of mining, jump your FC to a haz res and do some combat. Want to get some engineering mats and money? Jump your FC into a system with factions you are allied with and run some missions for them.

Fly Safe Commander o7

PS: Great name. Doorman was a courageous, yet unlucky man.
