VR Oculus

I dont get it! The Oculus has Elite Dangerous in the shop. It looked great! and the reviews were great! I was eager to try, so I purchased it! I clicked play in my oculus and a window pops up telling me to remove the oculus and look at my pc for a window that will pop up in order to create a new account with the frontier website? Once I create an account, and log in....I can jump back in on my oculus and play the game....Exactly what I did however....NOTHING happened in the Oculus and the Game app showed it was running. I gave it 30 mins in case it took that long to load? But nothing!. I quit the app, Restarted the Ocuus as well as my pc and started again. Nothing happened except, I was told to jump back on my PC and create an account in order to play. what Loopy loopy round the clock!

WHY, Creat a separate account? why not just link to my OCULUS account??? Why all the . I cannot get the game to play and I was looking forward to it! this is so frustrating? I never saw any Elite Frontier Launcher because it kept asking me to create an account after I already did....over and over....THEY should give you the choice to create an account or just PLAY the freaking game! I will never have the time to go to the website to pretend Im reading stuff! All I want to do, is turn on my Oculus and choose my game of choice without going through authentications and Pin Numbers! I have ONE account with Oculus which uses my freaking FB account. WHY do I need more accounts??? Christ!

unfortunate for such a brilliant game that account creation is an utter shambles when not buying direct from frontier developments
hopefully others may guide you who have gone trough this arduous task to get it running may offer help
I know that it will run a hmd if selected as primary display in the graphic options that's about it
as I don,t own one I cant really advise good luck...……………………….

The game is both flatscreen and VR - and sold at other digital stores, not just Oculus. It can’t cater to VR exclusively, so there are a few minor hoops to jump through.

To get the game running in VR, ensure you have “External Sources” enabled in the Oculus options. Start Elite in flatscreen and go to the Graphics options - there you will see a “3D” option - select “HMD headphones”

Exit Elite and restart the game. This time it will start in VR. You will probably need to immediately reset the view, the default keybind being f12.

If you have any questions or require further help, the VR sub-forum here can be of great assistance.

Welcome to the game 😁

Steam VR says it supports Oculus Rift. I have a Quest 2 which is supposed to be backwards compatible to Rift. But when I use the Quest 2, I'm sitting in my cockpit, but i have no hands, and no controls... it's hard to use a keyboard for some when they can't see it. Any one hear of any plans for a Virtual Controls/Cockpit I can see/use with the headset? (I can still use my Flight Stick - but it doesn't cover everything and Voice Attack only goes so far when you're in squad conversations)

I play through Steam VR on Rift S and have to say it is seamless as long as you select VR mode.....definitely needs a full HOTAS though, keyboard and mouse are not going to work on any level.

Hi, I came across this and am glad I did. The problem I have is this, I have only used Oculus rift once while playing elite dangerous and can't have had it setup right. It looked like watching a 100"curved monitor and not sat in a cockpit, when looking left or right I could see past the screen and see the Oculus white background. What have I not done that I should have ??.. Please.

Sounds like you were seeing the normal flatscreen game via desktop view. Look at my post further up for the basic steps you need to take. Probably you just need to enable VR in Elite’s settings.

This is why I bought the game directly from Frontier.

I just had to set up the controls to HMD the one time, years ago.
And now I simply start their launcher, and that fires up the Oculus software automatically. And I’m in. Easy peasy.

Plus, it means I’m not tied in to Oculus or Steam or any other platform, and am free to use whatever headset I want in the future.

Doesn’t help the Op now, but for others considering buying the game for VR, I would definitely go direct to Frontier...

Ok so I enabled external source in the Oculus app. Went into elite dangerous graphics settings but there is no option for hmd headphones, only side by side or anaglyph or off

Is your headset active before you start up Elite? If you start the game via desktop view inside your HMD then it should detect it.

I can’t think as to why it wouldn’t - are you using the Steam version of the game? That might require SteamVR running for it to be detected.

Sorry for not being much help, I have seen this problem mentioned before on this sub-forum (HMD + headphones option not showing) but I can’t remember what the solution was offhand.

This is what you should be seeing:

Holy Crap! I managed after trial and error to get the freaking game to work using the OCULUS 2 QUEST as well as be able to use the Controllers that came with it! But please forgive me for not noting the EXACT sequence of making this happen....Refund from Oculus I had to do.....Funny thing is, I already had Elite Dangerous in my steam library. I first started the Oculus Link app on my PC. Once Oculus was up and running I went to desktop app and opened Elite Dangerous in VR mode from there......That is all that seemed to make it work.....Oh wait....The Elite Dangerous launcher did pop up at some point and I think I hit play from there! I'm going to run the game today and hopefully make better notes. Yes, the oculus controllers worked but I had to go through the drop down menu in settings to activate it, but they do work.....

How does it feel using the oculus controllers? I didn't even know you could use them. I use a hotas , but i think i may try the controllers.

The learning curve of ED is steep to say the least, and setting up VR in many cases assumes that you have a master degree or similar, but once you get it all sorted out, you quickly forget, because this game in VR is probably the best VR experience you can buy for money. Welcome onboard :alien:7

Regarding the controls, I can highly recommend getting a Hotas (even a cheap one) when playing ED in VR. It adds considerably to the immersion, and once your muscle memory learns which button does what, it becomes like driving a car. I couldn't sit down and write what each button does, but once I'm in the spaceship, I don't even think about it anymore.

It's getting a lot easier now that my memory is taking over as to what button to press...But no issues with the Oculus controllers. I should point out that my Ocu is plugged into my PC.

I tried my oculus quest vr setup again and was very pleased. Last time i tried was a couple months ago amd it just didn't feel right(glitchy) this time everything was awesome. Truly feels like your flying the ship. I have mostly use the hotas but with space legs coming i guess i will have to get use to controllers. Before that though i will give the occulus hand controllers a try on VR.
