Am I the only person who is utterly unenthused right now about a generic FPS being shoehorned into my spaceship game?

There is blatant evidence for many of the critics, years of substandard patches and quality level. Its well beyond the benefit of the doubt, its actually on frontier to demonstrate a different attitude for their sdlc.

People turning a blind eye can only be anchoring on "this time will it will be better", which isn't impossible, but i think can only be seen skeptically until proof otherwise. The demo didn't help. We're up to the alpha.

Ok, that comes off a bit defensive, I was interested in your take on the Yang to the White Knight Yin, if you like. I'm certainly not accusing you of being a Knight of Doom, you are, to my mind, a vocal critic of the game. Not the same. But there are people on this forum who will take every single opportunity they can to slate the game, crowbarring that in where ever they can, much like a White Knight does and for the most part what they're saying isn't even true. I have read on here that 'FD hate the players', it is that level of crap I was talking about.

the constant whining on the forums about balance and performance and nerf this and nerf that. I was just pointing that out - this forum will never be the same again.
Don't get me started about devs trying to balance their game, actually just getting it ruined... ...and I am a full grown adult and without any OCD...

...it makes me wonder: maybe been a full grown adult and without any OCD it's the main reason because I play this game about a month/a year, but every year less than the one before... ...I usually play ED when there is a new release, a new era or just some highly expected feature is released...
...I am very excited at first when I am back to play ED, all that my expectations makes me eager to try that new features...
...but after some weeks all grows stale and boring again and again and again...
...this game is still a mile wide and an inch deep...
...personally I am still awaiting to walk on the beaches of the terreastrial planets I have discovered...
...but it seems that I am going to be deluded again that I will unable to land on that kind of planets...
...what a pity... ...it's just since Horizons that I am awaiting it... ...6 full years... ...5 considering the covid-19...

For what its worth, heres my guess

The most vocal critics are the most passionate (and consequently some of the most frustrated) players of the game. They have asked, begged, pleaded, that Forntier change the game or other aspects of how Frontier do "stuff".

After seeing little in the way of change and becoming increasingly frustrated by a myriad of issues I`m not going to list out here, They have basically got to the point where they are "turning up the volume to 11" becuase there is a belief, a perception that this is now the only option left to effect meaningful change.

Of course, its all nonsense, as I`ve said before this is a dictatorship, not a democracy, but it is pretty understandable human behaviour nonetheless.

They explicitly mentioned "tenuous atmospheres" so don't expect water in Odyssey. Unless they're keeping it as a surprise as dr Ross mentioned "more landable types", but I highly doubt it. It will be basic rocky worlds with better rock scatter system and coloured skies. We will see soon enough. Alpha in two weeks (tm)

Exactly...
...maybe if I let them other 5 full years of development...
...or 10... ...or 15... ...or 20...
...(sad) lol

...how much time is enough?

Is there enough time? Will we eventually, maybe, someday get full atmo landing?

What kind of RL techs will we have to play this game and other ones in the future 5... ...10... ...15.... or 20 years? Will this game able to keep it up for such a long time with any newer advancement in such RL techs?

I don't go over 20 because at that time I will be aging 67 years old... ...naturally hoping to be still alive...

I think it depends on the financial success of EDO.

with a niche space game?- not likely to compete profit-wise with more popular game types - maybe that is why some fps pvp is included with Odyssey. The estimates are a million copies of Odyssey - so given their 500k users (within 30 days) they expect about as many new players as there are currently playing - and this can just come from the fps pvp folks. So profit-wise it is clearly targeting the fps crowd - but if that will be a hit or a hit & miss, we will see - if combat mechanics aren't interesting enough, they will leave as quickly as they came in - if FDev is aware of how difficult it is to keep these folks satisfied - and new content will be eaten by them within hours - is FDev not a bit too slow to keep up with this group?

It’s not that it’s a niche space game. Space games are one of the staples of gaming. It’s the “gameplay” that matters! That’s why a simple little indie game with 20yr old looking graphics like Valheim can sell 5 million copies in 5 weeks. It’s the ”gameplay” that drives success and in my opinion once you get past the visuals and sound in ED you realize the actual gameplay is lacking. So far from what has been SHOWN, nothing is changing that.

I say that all of the time: It is what we have, not what folk think it should or ought to be.

It's a testament to the success of the game that its infected people to the point where they are literally mad with rage that the game doesn't do this or that. If it was really as bad as the most vocal critics would have you believe, those exact same critics would have moved on to the next game long ago. Its frustrated hyperbole born out of love for the game.

Yes the execution is pretty shoddy in places. At times unforgivably bad. But in terms of what's been achieved overall, its nothing but a success.

You`d never think that reading these forums sometimes.

For what? Delivery of your own personal requirements? I don't think that's how anyone makes games. Good job really, otherwise it would indeed take 20 years to get it out the door!

Targetting the 'FPS PvP crowd' is too narrow a way of looking at it.

For one thing, that report also cited millions of inactive players, and they'll be expected to make up some of those projected mil sales for sure. (The specific stats have been redacted now, but last FDev said they've shifted 4 mil units of the core game. That's 3.5m potential players right there, before even getting to the 8m Epic sales.)

Secondly, EDO seems to be as much an RPG as an FPS, so it could attract from that fandom as well. (As much as it might end up losing everyone, from Battlefield fans through to Fallout freaks, by being a jack of all trades, master of none ;))

The third thing though is... ED isn't going to change. As much as I'd like it to in some ways, and for the influx of new players to be part of that. It's just too fundamentally pegged to its ponderous scales and RNG realities. It's still gonna be ED. And the players it's going to most appeal to, are gonna be the ones it's attracted already ;)

Guess we'll see. (I can still see an uptick in the demands for 'tempo' in the verse though. As much from returning Cmdrs as anywhere ;))

Not exactly.

Odyssey is targetting the "star citizen" crowd (which also intersects with the ED crowd). People who always wished for a character based, first person perspective space game, a proper space opera where we can all go on our own chosen adventures across the galaxy.

As we all know too well, that target crowd is not very niche, it's actually quite large, and they are willing to spend.

So I quite expect that Odyssey doom predictions will not age well at all :)

Really??!?!? Seriously??!?!?!?

My own personal requirements?!?!?!?

IS full atmo landing my own personal requirements?!?!?!?

You are just making fun of yourself if you think really that it's just my own personal requirements... ...LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
