Newbie exploration goals to feel some sense of accomplishment?

2Mly later I'm still looking for one of those.

Also an ELW orbiting a lone L dwarf.

Yeah, I haven't found one around a brown dwarf that I can recall, but I rarely visit them.

The ELM though? I've found one as a moon to a terrestrial planet, but still haven't found one as a moon to a gas giant. I think statistically they're similar in rarity.

I love those ideas!! Thanks!
A little late parhaps, but these may inspire you on your early adventures. ..

Earlier EDSM numbers, available on the ELW list. There are:
3,286 ELMs in total,
2,586 ELMs which orbit a planet (of which HMCPs account for 94%),
491 ELMs which orbit a dwarf star (that orbits another star),
177 ELMs which orbit a gas giant,
26 ELMs which orbit a star (that orbits another star).

Of course, in overall terms of rarity, when compared to ELWs, they are quite similar. But if you find an ELM, chances are it's going to be around an HMCP, and a gas giant's quite a jackpot find. Might even be The jackpot ELM, if you don't count those around stars (of all varieties) as "real" moons.

I've been playing about a week now, and am loving the game! But today I finally felt like I was ready to head off into the unknown ...
So... what are some challenging but entirely reachable Exploration goals that one might strive for with a Hauler, say?

Whatever golas you decide upon make sure you take some really cool screen shots with your first exploration ship. Cool star background shots and planets. Land on a variety of planets and get some really cool pictures. Keep your pics in organized folders. Two years from now you will look back on those pics.

IMO if your gonna go exploring, you gotta take lots of great pics. And store them so you can look the up easily. You can screen pic the system map so you can easily remember your location.

My first real expedition outside the bubble. I remember my first big trip quite well. Scary, exciting, and a lot of fun.

I must have started less than two weeks after you. After upgrading to a Diamonback Scout, I "downgraded" back to a Hauler built for distance. I feel like I could easily head out into the black with my current, still pretty basic ship. From what I've read, the main reason for range is to reach specific destinations faster, such as returning home, and sparse areas of the galaxy. I am saving up for a ship that will let me take an SRV, to have the option of landing for more fun.

Without even noticing, I got some first mapped within the bubble. Look for worlds that all advice tells us to ignore for their low value, namely icy and rocky worlds. It was somewhere near Sirius, too, not even much of a backwater. This is helped by doing short, economical jumps and scanning everything undiscovered on the way. That was a nice accomplishment boost!

A lot of the expensive builds are about efficiency, not necessity. I'm sure we can do coreward explorations in our little haulers with little trouble. But even staying in the bubble to more easily (and more frequent data check ins), we can get some exciting moments and claims. Worry about efficiency once the simple stuff becomes boring and rote.

You definitely can. I just took a quick look at builds, you can reach 25 ly on a stock Hauler: no engineering, no FSD booster. That's quite enough to reach the core... although it will be quite the long journey! But engineer just the FSD, and you'll be at 39 ly, plenty enough. Put in a Guardian FSD booster, and leave the AFM, then you're at 45 ly. If you're planning on exploring in and near the bubble, it's not like you'd be boosting via neutron stars often anyway.

If you going for the ELW in each region, AQUILA'S HALO and XIBALBA are getting mighty thin these days....

Is it really? Sure compared to several years ago it might be harder. But for me, someone that's fairly new to the game, found it to be much easier than expected to find elws in those two regions. Even got two in Aquilas.
