Elite Dangerous : Odyssey Alpha Unofficial FAQ

I bought the game from Frontier, can I buy Odyssey from them (the website only offers Steam)?

Yes, go here (or if you don't want access to the Alpha here ).

What about on the Epic store?

Look for the base game and it is listed as an Add-on.

Can I mix-&match parts of the game on different stores?

Probably not a good idea. This seems legit.

Consoles?

Sorry, no Alpha for you :(

I bought the Lifetime Expansion Pass (LEP) back in the day - do I need to buy Odyssey? Do I get the Alpha?

Odyssey is included in your pass. Even the Alpha :)

I pre-ordered Odyssey without the Alpha, can I upgrade to get Alpha access?

no, but you can cancel your pre-order and then order the alpha version

Do I keep things like first discoveries made in the Alpha in the Live game?

No. What happens in alpha stays in alpha. Apart from a few minor things like keybinds / sysmap settings. Always a good idea to backup your keybinds :). In fact for an Alpha you might want to backup all your settings, as you may end up mangling your graphic settings too.

Where do I download the alpha?

Unless you are CMDR Thrust from Bradford you don't. It's out on the 29th and will appear in the launcher then.

When is it out on the 29th?

Expected at 13:00 UTC (remember the UK will be on BST by then, so 14:00 BST). Times and system specs here

What does the Pioneer suit that comes with the Pre-Order look like?

Like this

Will I be able to see the Pioneer skin suit in the Alpha?

Probably not - Cosmetics (and the store) are often disabled in test environments

Have fdev taken a snapshot of our CMDRs, or when will they?

Details in this post (well, no date for the snapshot, but it's a while off)

they are planning for each phase to last 1 week until they reach phase four, they may extend them though. Once they reach the end of phase 3 the alpha will go down for two days while they merge the live snapshot with the alpha.

I have bought the Alpha via Steam (Epic), but run ED with Frontiers native launcher. Can i access the alpha without running steam?

That is a FAQ - not sure what the answer would be other than 🤷‍♀️ . I think the correct answer is 'buy Odyssey for the platform you have the game on'. But I have no idea?

i think (drawing from my experience of buying horizons for an older account via steam) - if you have linked frontier and steam account, you'll be able to run the alpha from the native launcher.

That ... is so messed up :)

Meh - I thought the different platforms validated your ownership - that sounds messed up if you buy on steam but can then launch vanilla. I think I'll avoid that as anyone with spaghetti setups will probably know what they're going ... maybe ;)

The only thing I can't figure out is why are people asking this. Isn't it the most obvious thing ever?
You'd think so but FD are good at being ambiguous, either by design or not properly reading their statements before publishing, and that FD are also prone to moving the goal posts. :)

I have just one question that I need clarification on: As a LEP buyer who originally bought the game through Frontier directly, later linking the account to Steam, will I be getting an Odyssey Deluxe Alpha Steam key when the Alpha launches ? Or will I have to run the launcher standalone for the Alpha to even show up ?

Any copy of ED bought on Steam prior to the 'change to steam login' will launch directly from the Frontier launcher - or, at least mine do. (those which have a 'key')
When the change to keyless purchase on steam happened we were tied to purchasing everything on steam.

I believe you all, I just am not willing to write 'buy here, it will be fine' into the FAQ because ... I am a coward :)

I'm going to hide behind this being an Alpha FAQ, not an Odyssey one ;)
