Considering starting over: Need some questions answered.

I'm not sure about you pc players, but I'm on PS4 and the last time I did a full new commander wipe, I kept my key binds and discovery tags (because I kept my user name).

Its super sad that isnt possible to have more save games ..

Get an XB. You can have as many accts on the XB as you want and give them free 'Access' to any game you own on that XB. Dunno if PS works the same. And on XB we can create multiple Holo-Me avatars and switch them around at will. The only weird thing is that a female* avatar gets a lot more comments and attention from certain players than a male* avatar. Makes me wonder what a female player has to put up with in everyday life.

*Other gender identities are available but visual appearance is no indication of gender identity so I simplified, no offence meant to any individual, whoever you are.

Regarding the Holo-Me. I don’t remember what I did when I ‘re-set’ one of my alt Cmdrs. Perhaps it wasn’t a full clear save; everything went in terms of ships, materials and ranks. My holo-me was the same, which either means I’d used the default setting when I originally made the account (I find the whole thing a little unnecessary for a creation I rarely see myself) or I managed not to do a full re-set....there are two more options, a bug and middle age memory.

Whatever the case may be the OP would be best served taking a cautious approach.

I’m tempted to see if I can recreate this on another account, just in an attempt to prove to myself I’m not losing my marbles.

Consider a new account - the game isn't expensive - then you don't have to wipe your save. I wiped mine, because I wasn't too far into the game anyway, but in your case it would be sad to just wipe it out of existance.
I suffer from Multiple Account Disorder Syndrome, and it's not pretty. :(

I'm sure someone else has already said this (didn't read whole thread; CBA), but dude, seriously, start an alt/buy another account.
I'm sure by now you've seen lots of people mentioning why they see a clear save as a boon, not a bane. I have a free alt account for Horizons, but have a Lifetime Expansion pass on my main, and I don't see why I would buy that only to buy the game AGAIN.

Looks like I got the information I need: All ARX related stuff will stay, can keep the same commander name, previous discoveries will be tied to that Frontier account (but NOT the new commander even though it's the same name, which is as it should be), Holo-Me will not be saved (so take screenshots of the settings to recreate), back up keybinds just to be safe. That about cover it?

Interesting how the community is split on the very idea of restarting. Some are desperate to hold onto what they see as progress, while others feel they have reached the end of the road, so what's the point of holding onto that progress.

I've said it before in other places, a good thing for Frontier to add would be a "prestige" system. If you hit triple Elite, you can clear your save to start over, but certain things carry over (Holo-me, permits maybe) and perhaps unlocks some new decals/paint jobs... maybe an ARX bonus to reward/encourage people to start over.

......... maybe an ARX bonus to reward/encourage people to start over.

Whereas the double-engineered modules are another obstacle to clear-saves unless all of them become available via tech brokers.

I always played iron-man because the idea of a number in the insurance claims stats made my brain itch. However, recently I decided that the re-qualifying of engineers was getting to be a bore so I swapped to plastic-man. So now on destruction I don't clear save, I chose the starter freewinder - means I lose the destroyed ship and its modules etc but I don't have an insurance claim nagging me in the stats. Only done it a couple of times (different accounts) so not sure if I can live with it long-term (it still feels a bit like cheating).

The joy of the fresh start is soon replaced with the agony of a re-grind, be it the main or alt account.

The time is sacrificed, in any case.
