General / Off-Topic The Mandalorian TV series

Strangely, I think Mandalorian worked because it was so simple. It didn't feel like it they were worrying about the burden of being huge and important and "honouring the legacy" and basically just delivered simple thrills with robots and aliens and space soldiers. No tortured heroes or complex motivations just action-packed morality tales. And because what they were doing was so simple they could do it really, really well. It's basically The A-Team or Kung-Fu with a bigger budget! They gave us the stuff we liked when we were five years-old. Star Wars seems to be better off when it doesn't try to grow up with the audience.

Yep. It worked for the reason Aliens did and the more recent alien films were all pants. They didn't mess with the basics leaving the fans scratching their heads about what the flipping crikey was going on.

Blasters blast, ATST's look like that, kerpow, zap. Enjoy.

The treatment of Gina Carano ruined it for me. ¯\(ツ)
Couldn't care less personally, she brought in on herself and it makes no difference to how much I like the telly program. A recurring character no longer recurs it's no biggie.

Replace her and say she got cosmetic space surgery to infiltrate an empire base if there's already scripts.

The problem is that she didn't "bring it on herself", though.
And of course it's not a biggie for the series, but it kind of is a biggie when comes to where Disney is heading.

You mean the game? I read somewhere (or probably seen on yt) that they repurposed a lot of that in to fallen order
1313 was supposed to be the companion game Underworld which Lucasfilm types were representing as being a more 'mature' themed star wars setting. Lots of its concept like Saw Guerrea, The Church of the Force and a a few other bits and bobs are concepts they scavenged from the concept work they did.

I know. I used to get video game magazines when they still existed in print and everything I've read says what I said in the post you quoted. It got repurposed for the games that came out since them, instead.

The end result is one of the coolest models you will ever see. This replica stands nearly 46-feet long, by 33-feet wide, and 13-feet tall. It’s essentially a dream playhouse for Star Wars fans.

The kind of thing every Elite player would want to have...

I've heard people refer to the mandalorian stories as simply rehashed western stories. Makes sense I suppose.

In the same way that Westerns were simply rehashed Samurai films - one Mandalorian episode is very familiar if you’ve ever watched The Seven Samurai / The Magnificent Seven / Battle Beyond The Stars.

Yojimbo / Fistful of Dollars is also directly referenced, with almost exactly matching scenes. Lone Wolf & Cub is pretty much the premise for the series, too.

Hate t' contradict ya, Arioch, but some Westerns maybe. :) There are plenty of Westerns that originated independently of Samurai films, since the genre originated before any Samurai film ever existed.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled (not as nerdy) program...

You are completely correct; I didn’t mean to imply all Westerns were remakes of Samurai movies - just the idea that The Mandalorian is simply rehashed Western stories is the same as saying that Western films are simply rehashed Samurai stories: some are, some aren’t.

With regards to Mando - the Seven Samurai / Magnificent Seven script had already been done by Star Wars in one of the Clone Wars episodes. I think saying it’s just rehashed Westerns does it a disservice though - it’s be like making the same claim about Firefly 😁

Joss Whedon stole that from an RPG he was running... :(
