Oculus SDK v0.4.3 and Elite Dangerous v2.06

Oculus SDK v0.4.3 has been released. Since the general Oculus Rift discussing is getting very long, i thought it's an idea to start a discussion per version of the SDK and Elite Dangerous. Let's discuss how Oculus SDK v0.4.3 works with Elite Dangerous!

On the plus side it's nice to see some progress with direct mode. On the down side direct mode appears not to work for some and others have low fps issues. I will probably switch back to extended mode until they can sort it.

I never installed any SDK? Thught that is only for actual developers, and not really needed to just play the game no?

Direct mode is borked but extended works well. Seems better than the last version. Was able to play at 4K downsampled with minimal judder when not at stations and rings.

Unplayable for me after 0.4.3 runtime upgrade

I would recommend not upgrading the runtime to 0.4.3 right now. Not until it's understood why so many people are having issues.

I had always been impressed with how well ED worked with the Oculus. After the 0.4.3 update, it is unplayable. Almost seems like the old DK1... with tearing / Judder so bad it makes one sick.
I've always had best results with ED using the extend Desktop to the HMD.
With 0.4.3 I've tried both modes Direct HMD access from Apps and Extend Desktop to the HMD.
They both are unplayable.
If someone has a workaround, plz post.
Just an FYI

On reddit some people noticed they could fix their problems with the following suggestions:

- turn ON areo
- turn off vertical vsync

I think you are exactly right. To my knowledge I've never installed the SDK either. I just downloaded the 'runtime ' to play.

As Bobbydylan said some people use the same term. I think because the rift is still a dev kit - a new SDK is the bigger headline (also the SDK download may include runtime causing confusion).

Spot on with the original post, I think it is time that the main Rift Discussion thread was taken out and shot. Over 50% of the thread is not Rift discussion at all, its constant updates of someone's postal status. The thread should be renamed to "Rift: Let's list the 46 people who have one and the 3 people still waiting - updated hourly"
.
Anyway, now I have that off my chest.
.
I have not seen any real difference upgrading to 0.4.3 (using a i5 / HD7950). It certainly is no worse.
.
As for the people who have problems, well there are always people who have issues on every rift update. It should be remembered if you have any issues then this release has no firmware (which means backing out is simple pimple). Therefore to revert back all you have to do is uninstall 0.4.3 and re-install 0.4.2

Running 0.4.3 and the latest Nvidia drivers (my card is a GTX 560 (non-Ti)). Damn Oculus and Nvidia releasing updates at almost the same time, I haven't actually tested them separately!

Anyway, I can say overall its a big improvement for me. I play with ED graphics at minimum (though the ED Oculus qulaity setting at max), and use the new Nvidia drivers to downsample from 2x resolution.

Overall is completely smooth in space, text is more legible now (not perfect though) and stations while juddery, are soft juddery rather than hard juddery (best way I can describe it) meaning it hurts my eyes/head much less.

Quite surprised its this good on what was a very average card when bought 3 years ago! (still deliberating over which new card to buy and when)

I was pleasantly surprised by the text improvement, I was running the Rift supersampled in 0.4.2 on medium(ish) and experienced pretty much the gameplay you describe in 4.0.3 (GTX 980 - I have no excuses ;)).

Updated to 4.0.3 and text is much better even without supersampling, taking that element out of the equation and tweaking a few other graphic settings for the better and it's a pretty decent overall improvement.

Still having issues with direct mode, but as extended is working so well, I'm not really fussed. I'd like to see a firmware update though.

Wow this warrants a few questions :)
- specs in your sig are really up to date ? You can play smoothly at a 4k resolution in the Rift with a single graphics card ? I thought two gpus would be mandatory even for 1440 downsampling with current hardware...
- what framerate are you actually getting ?
- how much of an improvement was the new SDK for you ? Were you able to play in 4k downsampled before ?

Anyway, this is very reassuring, it means a good PC bought today will probably run the CV1 very well.

"specs in your sig are really up to date ?" Yes

"You can play smoothly at a 4k resolution in the Rift with a single graphics card ?"
I didn't say smoothly, said minimal judder, I've seen it running at 75fps at a nav beacon but with the odd dip to below that (minimal judder). In stations (didn't test rings) I was getting at low as 40fps.

"I thought two gpus would be mandatory even for 1440 downsampling with current hardware..."
Depends, playing last night at 1440p with everything on low on a single OC'd 980 seemed OK, still get dips below 75fps in certain circumstances.

"what framerate are you actually getting ?"
It varies, seen around 75fps and as low as 38fps.

"how much of an improvement was the new SDK for you ?"
Seems a bit of an overall improvement, stations and rings still an issue but an improvement.

"Were you able to play in 4k downsampled before ?"
On the monitor yes, ran very well but it's a 60hz monitor so I wasn't too bothered if the frame dipped to 40fps. I'd not tried it on the rift, just thought I'd give it a go last night, thought it would be like a slide show, wasn't as bad as what I'd thought it would be, I think though that SLI if they sort the latency issue will be the way to go.

Hey guys, just took delivery of a new DK2. Used to have a DK1, so I am not totally new, but there seems to be some more configuration than before.

I am getting quite a bit of judder - both in and out of stations and what seems to be some red/green shift on objects as if it was set up for the 3D glasses. I am NOT using extended mode here. I tried that but the tracking will not work with 0.43 in that mode it seems, the camera will not light up and I get the 'no HMD' popup on the screen. With Direct HMD Access it goes in quite easily and tracking works fine.

With the direct mode the system does not see the DK2 as a device I have not been able to find a way to change the resolution or set 75Hz on it. In the Graphics Options it still shows my primary display as the display that is being used, even though it is using the DK2. In game I can run everything on full - and I can run everything on low/off, but that seems to make no difference to the judder.

Can anyone share what settings in game they are using that gives a smooth experience? It would be good to get a list of the options you have set in game.

If you are using Extended mode, what SDK and runtime are you using? I am assuming 0.43 here but would like confirmation!

So stats:

i7 950 @3.07 (8 core)
16 Gig memory
Win OS 8.1 64 bit
Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 with latest (Oct 2014) drivers
DK2 with 2.12 firmware
SDK: 0.43
Runtime: 0.43

Thanks!
