Ship's Log, FSN INDEPENDENCE

8 Apr 3307

After nearly 3 years out in the deep black, the INDEPENDENCE has landed at a base in the Pencil Nebula, New Growth. It had been my intention to run back to populated space, perhaps even back to Earth, all in one long journey, but I had become concerned that the ship's structural integrity had suffered from its long, LONG exploration mission. Upon landing, I found that the ship's structural integrity had fallen to a frightening 2%. I doubt very much that the ship would have survived the journey to Earth. Indeed, the closest system in the bubble was still some 50 jumps away. We only just made it to New Growth.

I have a decision to make, now. The ship has collected scans of systems and planets numbering in the thousands. Do I sell the data here, at New Ground, or do I carry on to the bubble, now that the ship has been repaired, and sell it there?

In any case, it's nice to be landed, even if it is on an asteroid base. Facilities are limited, but some brief shore leave is possible, and I intend to take full advantage of it before carrying on the journey.

2%? That's loads, I never come home with more than 0%.

Prices are the same everywhere, if you just want cash then sell it. If you want to gain influence - whether in the search of permits or to swing the BGS for your favourite faction then save it for that, just don't get in a fight until it's sold.

Well, I'm not certain what happens if your structural integrity falls to 0. Not hull damage, displayed on the hud, but actual integrity, which you can only see in the maintenance screen...

Ya, I'm leaning toward just selling the data, but it would be worth more in the bubble, wouldn't it?

It's worth the same.....unless you sell on a carrier, then the carrier gets a 25% cut. I always comeback with 0% integrity btw...no biggie.

Nothing happens. Your ship is just a bit more vulnerable to dmg but nothing is gonna explode just because 0% is there. I've seen 0% integrity several times after longer trips, no issues at all.

To be honest, I wonder how did you manage to have a non-zero value after almost 3 years in the black. In my case 2-3 months of mediocre-intense playing was enough to reach 0%. I guess you haven't been playing too often? Or you haven't SC-cruising much (which is the main reason of decreasing the integrity)?

Yeah, 0% Integrity merely incurs -30% Hull Hardness and is widely regarded as a non-issue outside of Ship-to-Ship combat.

2% Integrity btw. means the Vessel has traveled ~9.8 Million Ls in Supercruise. (1% degraded for every 100.000Ls).
So a trip to Hutton Orbital (6.4M Ls) alone costs you 64% Integrity - all done within ~85 Minutes ;)

I leave my exploration ships at 0% integrity all the time. It doesn't take long for it to reach such low numbers if you spend any significant amount of time in supercruise. So to me, repairing it is just throwing money away.

Well... a lot of my time is spent mapping and visiting planets. I try to at least map all my discoveries, and land on planets I can land on. As a result, I spend relatively little time in Supercruise.

As an explorer if you're mapping a lot of planets and landing on them then you're spending a relatively large amount of time in supercruise.

Little time in SC is when you glance at the FSS, maybe resolve things or maybe not, and then jump again. If that's most of your exploration then your SC is limited to lining up the next jump.

What I mean is, I might spend 10 minutes in Supercruise getting to a planet, then three hours exploring the surface. A lot of my time is spent actually ON planets.

I guess you're both right, then. Actually visiting planets means you're doing a lot of supercruise. But if you're spending more time on the planets, resulting in visiting fewer of them proportionately, then that offsets the time spent in SC as well. ;)

But yeah, supercruise travel causes wear & tear, and I've always looked at like this: If you spend days/weeks/months+ exploring between dockings, then you'll usually end up with 0% integrity for most of your exploration anyway. Paying for repairs only makes your hull tougher for the start of the next journey, and then is lost again. So it's up to you as to whether it's worth paying for that.
