Newcomer / Intro Tungsten

I am looking for tungsten and just want to be clear about going planetary prospecting without wasting my time. How do I get a load of tungsten? I can use EDDB and select tungsten and vulcanism but I dont know what it means by water geysers etc and tbh dont know what vulcanism actually means. How do I pick the right planet to get it and will I find geo or bio sites to get the most in the shortest time? Do I need to DSS the planet before landing?

Use the dss to find the bio/geo spots. Any POI will do. You can also drive around cluelessly using the build in radar till you find meteors and crack those.

A lazy mans way would be to go to the famous shard sites and get the g5 equivalent of tungsten and trade down.

If it helps.....

Yeah, after finding a planet with geo sites and a good percentage of tungsten, DSS that planet, head down to one of the geo sites, drive around looking for the various crystals and fragments and whatnot that will be around the geysers or fumaroles or whatever, and shoot them. Some will drop tungsten, so shoot more of those types.

It is still not a fast process, but that's about the best you can do inside the bubble.

Use EDDB to select the highest percentage Tungsten planet with volcanism near you, FSS and DSS it as you arrive then land at geo site 1 there will be lots of geysers etc there and additionally four or five types of structure variant from Piscean Pebbles* to Filament Crystals** which will yield materials when shot and scooped. Be careful on higher gravity worlds when shooting the filaments as the resulting target is quite spherical and can roll out of range very fast.

Water geysers can be used for fun as long as you have a spare SRV, just drive onto one and when it roars watch the world drop away as your SRV flies kilometres into the sky.

* Contain commonest materials.
** Contain the rarest material available on that planet.

isn't it Piceous cobbles and needle crystals?

Vulcanism just refers to whether a planet is subject to volcanic activity which in game indicates the presence of geological sites where materials can be gathered . After scanning with the FSS the planet description will tell you want type of volcanic activity the planet has (i.e. magma, water, carbon dioxide, etc.) and how many "sites" are on the planet. The number of human sites is also listed which refers to outposts, starports, poi's and Fleet Carriers (for some reason). Alien and biological sites when encountered will also be listed in the description. The geological sites are where the volcanic activity is located (geysers, fumeroles as stated above). When you map the planet with the DSS your navigation panel will update with waypoints for the site locations. Land at one SRV up and go rock hunting. Materials also drop while mining but I don't know enough about mining or how to know what asteroid might drop a specific material (like tungsten) other than looking to the planet composition arjay noted.

I'd just go mining for platinum. You can get 100 mil per hour while getting your tungsten. You pick up some tungsten while you're mining, but you get loads of carbon and vanadium that you can trade up for it. you also pick up some molybdenum that you can trade down and loads of other stuff you can trade across.

"volcanism" in EDDB = GEO site in ED. Bodies that show up with Volcanism in EDDB are bodies that have Geo sites in the game. When you're there, you need to map the body in question (scan with DSS), then the geo sites will show up as persistent POIs on your HUD (if you're close enough) and your nav screen (left panel). Land and shoot.

Alternatively - you asked
How do I get a load of tungsten?

To really fill up on all raw materials, follow this guide:

If you're only after Tungsten, you just need to go to HIP 36601 C 3 b and collect Tellurium, then trade it (1 for 3) at a raw material trader for Tungsten.

TBH I havent played in a while and so needed to practice a bit with my new HOTAS as well as get back into it. So I am full of everything except a bit of tungsten and so wanted to use it as an excuse to fly around and land on a planet and challenge myself with getting used to it all again. It has worked well so far as I have found tungsten and been working out how my HOTAS works. I am enjoying it and find that what I learned previously is starting to come back as well as relearning my HOTAS controls.

What I would like to know is what are the colour schemes for EDDB to work out which of the types of rock are tungsten (or molybdenum in this planet). I think there are piceous cobble, crystalline fragments, needle crystals and crystalline clusters. But I am not sure.

EDDB body colours:

blue - g1 mats
green - g2
yellow - g3
pink - g4

Thanks Para but also what is the name of each type of rock as well as the colour. I want to recognise the right one in my scanner when I land at a geo site and then only go for those types of rock. I think tungsten is crystalline cluster but cant be sure atm. I would like to know all of them for future reference.

Ah well - it goes:

Piceous Cobble - g1 materials

Cystralline Fragments - g2

Crystalline Cluster - g3

Needle Crystals - g4

The wiki is now out of date (it still thinks there are 5 grades of raw) I don't know if the two crystallines still can have 2 grades, I don't think so.

BTW - out at the bio sites of Crystalline Shards, they produce Crystalline Clusters which act like needle crystals in that they contain g4 material - I don't know why F D couldn't have used a different name for those instead of muddying the waters.

On a body with good Tungsten concentration (preferably better than the other g3's) land on a geo spot. Doesn't matter which kind. Then shoot and harvest the Crystalline Clusters. If you are lucky enough to find a bio spot instead, then it's the Mussidaen Seed Pods you want to shoot. Do shoot the Needle Crystals/Phloem Excretions too. The g4's are valuable and can be exchanged.

Very good post. I forgot to mention the fungal bio sites - so @Hawknerd here from the (accurate this page) wiki:

Sorry to ask a daft question. Why Tungsten in particular?
You collect an assortment of mats at a geo sites and it all builds up eventually.
The kind of elements show up on the system map, so that's what you can expect to find. I've found you can expect to pick a couple of elements up if the amount is around 5%.

Go to Inara -> Engineering -> Componnets and select Tungsten.
From that list, take your guess. The stuff is used in a lot of premium synthesis receipes as well as a lot of high end heavy duty engineering. I need it (a lot) for heavy duty hull reinforcements.
