Open vs Solo...again (Also maybe some cross platform play?)

o7 everyone,

First time poster long time lurker. First of all I am mainly an Xbox player so keep in mind all this is coming from that point of view. I also know this dead horse has been beaten more than various parts of the human anatomy during their teenage years but I just have to add my two cents.

After playing the game for a few hours in open today on Xbox for the CG and not seeing a single person the solo and private group modes just need to go. This is an MMO and splitting the already small player base up is just bad design. Now I know not everyone wants to participate in PVP combat that is a legitimate concern when getting rid of those modes. so I would propose adding a pvp flagging system like almost every other MMO in the world tends to use. The big crux of such a system is how do you incentivize players to participate in the pvp system and not punish the people that don't want to participate. So I would also propose that at the end of every week if you have kept your PVP flag on for the entire week you get a voucher that you can claim at any material trader for 50 of any grade 5 material. This would be kind of similar to the power play voucher system where it won't stack if you don't claim it every week so you can't just come back after a long hiatus and fill out your materials. But I do think it would solve a few issues this game has. At the end of the day this game is marketed as an MMO and everyone being in different instances makes it feel like a single player game. The only thing that makes the grind in this game remotely bearable is the community interactions.

Now on to the second part. Is there a remote chance in the future that we can either get cross platform play? There just doesn't seem to be a lot of players on Xbox. Failing that would there be the possibility of the account transfer being able to transfer everything not just credits. There are some grinds in this game that are terrible the first time and repeating them makes transferring unappealing at best.

Thanks for listening to my mad ranting.

Elite Dangerous is Massive, Multiplayer and Online. It also gives the player the choice as to exactly how multiplayer they want their game experience to be.

This is by design.

So, without further ado...

I think this topic must warrant an open letter by now, unless it has already been done, in which case another open letter to reference the previous open letter and how nothing has been done about the issue raised in that open letter yet. 🍿

...Urgh.

If you want to meet people and can't, that's mostly because you're on Xbox. That's a crossplay issue, NOT a reason to remove Solo from PC.

You also need to understand that not everyone plays Elite to socialise with strangers. Don't force them to, they won't like it. Even if they have an anti-PvP flag.

And why "incentivise" PvP? Nope, that's "my playstyle is the correct one" thinking.

I'm actually not a huge pvper and its not really my playstyle. I have just played enough other MMO to know that if you don't incentivize it with something it rarely happens. Also I am not entirely sure how removing the other modes would force anyone to socialize with other players. I guess I just want the game that's marketed as an MMO to feel like an MMO.

Edit: Since this is a discussion and you feel pretty strongly against it what honestly do you think would be detrimental if they removed both other modes? I am genuinely curious on what why you think this would be bad for the game as a whole?

Removing Solo mode (with an anti-PvP flag) still forces your computer to try to instance you with others. This can cause performance issues, especially for players in rural areas (poor Internet), or on low-spec machines, or console subscriptions that require paying extra for multiplayer.

The game has been sold for over six years with three game modes sharing a single galaxy state, based on a design published over eight years ago, a design that means that other players (and therefore PvP) are an optional extra in this game - and always have been. While the game is marketed as an MMO, it is also marketed as being able to be played in Solo and every player experiences and affects the shared galaxy.

There's no requirement for any player to play among others if they don't want to yet all players affect the game. Some players can't accept that other players don't need to play with them to affect the game - and the discussion on that topic has been ongoing for over eight years.

While some players want to play among other players, the choice of each player as to which game mode to play in precedes and may over-ride any desire that other players may have to play with them, i.e. players don't get to force other players to play the game the way they want them to.

No, Open Play would have to go instead, as all other Game Modes provide something Open can't offer : a logical, balanced and sensible (immersive) environment that makes some sense.
Of course, doing so would make just as much sense as removing Solo or PG Modes. None at all.

  • ELITE is a SMO by design, Single Player, Massively Online.... the little stacked-on MultiPlayer part due to its unreliable and dirt cheap P2P design fragments the Player Base 100x more than the Game Modes do, the tight Instancing limits do the rest
  • "Open only" is utterly impossible until the Game's 6 years old and deep structural failures & shortcomings are 100% fully addressed and patched out. None of which is in sight, in fact the Decisionmakers here don't even see any problem (cue totally broken and worthless pseudo C&P System, total engineering balancing and Ship role balancing chaos)
  • if you play in Open and don't see anyone : thank the great P2P Networking System. Chances are there's hundreds of Players all around you also in Open - they're just not instanced, despite you being in "Open Play" just as well.
  • due to above, go figure how much sense it'd make to sacrifice Game Modes which kept the whole imbalanced mess called "Open" in check and the Game itself alive. Even if one was crazy enough to do it, you might not even see any notable difference. Doesn't work the way you wish it would.
  • in short : there's plenty of damn good reasons that horse is dead, incinerated and its remains long degraded into the soil since a long time

PS.
Not seeing anyone in Open in a CG System? Consider yourself lucky. Sometimes Timing is everything.

Actually the two times I went to the CG system in open on PC this week there was no one in system but me in my instance.

This is one of those CG where getting insta ganked at the sun when I dropped in system would not really inconvenience me. No cargo to lose, just a rebuy at the station where I need to turn in my data anyway.

That said, If they had to get rid of any mode, my vote is for Open to go away. Because I like PG and Solo better.
Yes, that is sarcasm, and would be silly sounding if it were not. Pretty much like asking for Open only/weighted anything sounds. Silly.
