Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Both games have their good and bad, i come from a different angle to this guy, a 6 year SC veteran coming to ED and enjoying it. And he's right, he's not alone, i said right at the start of this i'm seeing a lot of ED veterans in SC these days, i'm sure there are a lot of SC veterans in ED now...

There is a large crossover between the two games.

The two reasons I don't/won't play SC are a) the performance/state of the game and b) if i'm boycotting games by EA then i'm definitely boycotting games from a company worse than EA

Now I don't understand the dislike between the two games

For some it will be the typical rivalry, like Spectrum vs Commodore or Monolithic vs Microkernel. For others it might be other reasons.

But for me (and i know for many others here and elsewhere) its not because of a dislike between the two games. On SA there are many people who criticize SC and ED. They think both are bad, although usually for different reasons.

I don't dislike SC... or at least the idea of it. I get a laugh out of its current state. I dislike the management who have spent 9 years lying to backers and using predatory marketing practices to keep the money flowing.

Now, if someone looks at CIG's history and they don't care about it or are fine with it, or if someone is unaware of their history, then I can see why they would be willing to give SC a chance.

Lies, damn lies, and CIG

Yeah, Elite Dangerous runs like a dream while still looking good, running all the Image Quality settings at maximum and 1440P resolution i'm pretty much looked at 150 FPS which is where i have my Frame Rate cap set. You could run ED on a Potato.

Star Citizen is much more challenging, at 1440P its really designed for a GTX 1080TI, or a more modern performance equivalent would be an RTX 2070 or an RTX 3060TI.

Its not so much the GPU, SC likes high core count high performance CPU's, lots of System RAM and absolutely MUST be installed on an SSD, running it on a Spiny Disk renders it completely unplayable.

I have an RTX 2070 Super, Ryzen 5800X, 32GB RAM and its installed on a PCIe 3 NVMe Drive, it runs quite well for me but i know for lots of others it just doesn't.

Odyssey has me a bit worried in regards to performance. SC for me is absoloutely unplayable. ED Odyssey in alpha... its more or less playable, but its not nice.

The thing is there are a lot more assets in a first person environment like a surface side station that's meant for exploration on foot than there is for a large hollow object floating in space, none of which the fine detail you can or are supposed to get close to, long distance trees and buildings can be very basic, you don't notice that from a distance, the interior of a building on foot needs much higher quality assets, and rendering that puts a much higher load on your system.

Having said that i believe Fronter still have some optimisation to do, i've seen what the frame rates are like in some of these area's and they should be better, Fronter are clearly very good at optimising performance so give it time.

The no restrictions nature of SC means you can step outside the box invent your own fun, like cramming a bunch of Merlin's into an 890J hanger and go bounty hunting.
You say that as if making your own fun is an option rather than necessity in a game as bare-bones as SC. The idea of "emergent gameplay" has been used by CIG to absolve itself of its responsibility to design and implement "fun" game loops. You may as well just download Lumberyard and skip the middle man entirely.

Hammerhead Docking works a treat, i have a video uploading....
Currently at 1080P, should be 1440P once Youtube is done rendering butchering it.

Skip to about 10 minutes or slightly more if you just want see docking.

You been on a splurge / grind man? You seem to have all of the Aegis ships there. Avenger, Eclipse, Gladius, all the variants, big boys like the Hammerhead and Reclaimer etc. Two weeks ago you didn’t have any of those ;)

Sure, i'm hoping for improvements.

Only about two weeks left before it is released.
