solution to FDL balance

wracking my brain how to deal with 'meta-fdl'.

I know my t-10, stacked with 6 long range burst with thermal shock, there is a 50/50 chance they'll burn out before they can blow me up.

Considering they're running 5g overcharged PPs and extremely hot weapons, possibly prismatics, I would have liked to think that I am running a perfect counter to their build.

...

without making further wide-sweeping changes to heat dynamics, I think perhaps lowering their heat threshold from 224 to somewhere around 180.

give them more of a glass-cannon archetype if they decide to run so incredibly hot. Make heat a serious consideration in their build/tactics, instead of something they can easily push through with minimal consequence.

At minimum I think that would force them to carry an extra heat-sink or two -- though still find themselves countered by thermal shock/cascade, balancing meta.

Getting gud and flying an FDL?

I don't think you A.) Understand what thermal shock does--which is raise someone up to but never above 90% heat, or B.) What thermal conduit is which is give a 60% damage boost if heat is over 100%

Most people actually run armored. Also, heating them up increases their DPS by up to 60%, so you're not really doing much. Also heat damage is both negligible and usually solved by MRP.

So TC is easier to get going? Ok, sure, lets make it easier to buff FDL dps

The FDL isn't supposed to be a glass cannon because it can stack up to 4000 shields and 2000ish hull.

They won't because that's not how it works. Both of those are useless experimental against literally anyone with a decent build and is half capable.

I tend to agree there. Try getting a FDL and seeing how much time/effort it takes to create a good build with engineering as well. Then come back and tell us it needs to be nerfed.

I have one, but it's far from being a half decent build. Not only has it cost me around 3x the original price of the FDL, it has taken considerable time to get the engineering specs up to what they are now and I still have a long way to go yet. In a low threat conflict zone, I can hold my own... JUST, anything more and I just get melted before I've even got half a dozen kills. So it still needs a LOT of work.

There is another problem with nerfing some aspect of a meta build ship to get more variety or any other reason,
If you succeed the ship that was lying second becomes the new meta and a few weeks later these threads will come round again except instead of saying FdL they will say Hauler or Mamba or whatever the latest meta ship is.

The T-10 is not really a combat ship. It's a better armed than a T-9, cargo barge. Covette, Cutter, and Anaconda are all better than it in direct combat. It's not junk in PvE. But that is about it.
T-10 makes a great armed trader or miner if you don't have the money/rank for a cutter. As long as you don't skimp on the shields too much, and are not facing a gank wing with multiple groms and/or torpedos, you will almost always have time to high wake.

I think I see OP's basic problem: turrets are weedy, and consequently the T10 is poor at combat.

The big ship bristling with turrets is better SF (it's crazy to expend the energy to rotate a whole spaceship when you could just rotate weapon mounts), but ... that game is not this game.

I'd like real SF combat. I choose to use turrets on most of my PvE combat builds. I'm under no illusions that they would be any good for PvP though. PvP combat is more like WW1 fighters than spaceships and if you want to be competitive in it you have to go along with that.

This is OK for me because I don't do much combat in my gameplay but if you want real SF combat, this game doesn't really have the right flight model or weapon options.
