Horizons / Odyssey Compatibility

Will console players receive some of the graphic changes? It's written as if console players had to wait for those until release.

No, Horizons players get nothing. It doesn't seem to matter if they are on PC or Consoles.

So, if do not shell out money for Odyssey, you will not get nice planets. Not until the un-announced released date for Odyssey on Consoles.
They're basically arm-twisting the entire PC community to buy the DLC or drool until at least this autumn

This sounds like it's gonna become a major headache:

How is this going to work with the BGS? Odyssey both adds a ton of planetary settlements, but also removes some that were present in Horizons if the alpha is anything to go by. How do you plan on making both Horizons and Odyssey work with the same BGS? Or will Odyssey receive a separate instance of the galaxy temporary? If yes to the latter, how the hell are you going to manage merging 2 different states of the galaxy on console launch?!

So many questions...

The BGS will continue as one ongoing simulation, with both Odyssey and Horizons players able to contribute to it throughout all periods mentioned in the post.

One thing I am curious about - will the new tech and features come to consoles on the same day as on pc with the odyssey later on for them, or is the tech coming later? What I mean is that both pc and console users share the same servers that provide missions, economy, bgs, etc. The new tech bring many new planetary bases on non-atmo planets, which, I guess, are accessible for non-odyssey owners which are not there in the current horizons state. If the new tech and bases do not come for consoles on the same date as on pc, this will put console players at disadvantage.

Frankly, this is an astonishing feat of incompetence and shows us that it is not a full release, but rather a PC beta with actual launch being the console release. Splitting the playerbase, splitting the squadrons and splitting friends in all types of activities is inexcusable. The playerbase is small as it is and it prevents people who are doing the same content from playing together until they do some serious gymnastics with launching old version of the game when they want to wing up. Even the smallest indie devs do not do stuff like that.

I can only say I am terribly disappointed in the questionable development process. Another release fail to add to the count.

This is going well ...

Thank you for the clarification that Console Cmdrs will see no change until Console release in Autumn. I think I speak for many in saying this has been a point of clarification the Console community have been looking for for some time. We will be patient and await the release hopefully as soon as can be possibly achieved.
Thank you for your efforts FDev ő7

After console launch, Horizons and Odyssey PC players will be able to land on the same body sites, but Horizons players will be limited to Horizons features i.e. they won't be able to get out of their SRVs to play on-foot.
Thanks for clarifying. That makes sense.

If they were to send all PC users to full Odyssey tech now, that would mean no PC could link with the consoles until the console users get their update.

This is probably the best middle ground they can find. PC users can still play with their friends, just don't have Odyssey running.
No, console players can't play with PC players anyway.

I think it's mostly done to reduce the number of "parallel" builds to maintain.

Instead of [PC Odyssey] [PC Horizons] [Console] there will be [PC Odyssey] [PC Horizons + Console].

Greetings Commanders,

We hope you enjoyed the recent alpha for the PC version of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey!

Thank you once again for your feedback and suggestions which will have a lasting impact for all future Commanders. This only marks the beginning for Odyssey. After the game launches on 19 May, we’ll continue tweaking and balancing according to your experiences, just as we have done in the past.

We know there are still a number of questions from the community, and today we’d like to give more information on the shared galaxy between Elite Dangerous: Odyssey and Elite Dangerous: Horizons.

From PC Launch:

All Elite Dangerous: Odyssey players will gain access to the new features, including planetary improvements, enhanced lighting, and textures. The differences will mean that Elite Dangerous: Horizons players cannot share a gameplay session with those playing Odyssey. However, Odyssey owners will be able to share a session with and play with those in Horizons by launching the game in Horizons mode – though if they do this, they will temporarily not have access to the new Odyssey features.

Console Launch Onwards:

In line with the console launch, we plan to update Elite Dangerous on all platforms (PC/PlayStation/Xbox) to allow Odyssey and Horizons players to reunite and play together with other users on their respective platform.

All Horizons players will also receive the new graphical updates, including the new planetary tech, lighting, and organics, free of charge, but will not be able to get out on foot or enter Odyssey’s tenuous atmospheres.

If you have any questions please leave them in the thread down below, and we will answer them as quickly as we can!

TL;DR: Odyssey in public beta until console launch.
