Horizons / Odyssey Compatibility

Frankly, this is an astonishing feat of incompetence and shows us that it is not a full release, but rather a PC beta with actual launch being the console release. Splitting the playerbase, splitting the squadrons and splitting friends in all types of activities is inexcusable. The playerbase is small as it is and it prevents people who are doing the same content from playing together until they do some serious gymnastics with launching old version of the game when they want to wing up. Even the smallest indie devs do not do stuff like that.

I can only say I am terribly disappointed in the questionable development process. Another release fail to add to the count.

Gymnastics like logging out of the game clicking the Horizons option below Odyssey in the launcher then clicking launch?

They're basically arm-twisting the entire PC community to buy the DLC or drool until at least this autumn
So? I don't get the issue with paying for something that others worked on if I like it.

Some here:"lol EDO so terrible haha so little effort spent on it rofl me skipping this crap lol."
FD:"You wont have any of it for months unless you pay for it."
Some here:"Not fair!!!! I will be drooling for months it looks so awesome just gimme! 😭 😭 😭"

I dont think such gymnastics were needed for base players to wing up with horizon players or to exchange an o7?
Just asking, i wasnt here when horizons was launched

Doing it 10-15 times a day because you sometimes want to play with friends and sometimes do Odyssey content.... I am constantly astonished how fanboys can defend the most egregious feat of incompetence that, frankly, shouldn't be made by an indie dev, let alone a huge company.

Having a workaround is not an excuse for bad design.

Frontier are probably hiring - somewhere - so get in. It sounds like they could do with your assistance.

Cheers for the update, extra fondles for my gorgeous Odyssey LEP and new super sexy gaming laptop tonight then!

I think the aim of FD is to have the worse lauch of an expansion ever. And seeing these features like: console players dumped in autumn, the ones with Oddysey will have to choose between their friends with expansion and ones without, and a lauch right after an apha phase (lol) i think they can easilly have the 1st prize.

I think Horizons will get the updates ... just need clarification in the way the post is written

It was indeed a little unclear, I think they just mean Horizons players won't be able to interact with Odyssey only stuff, but they will still get the lighting and planetary tech update, that's been made clear from early on.

Sorry to say i am disappointed with Frontier Developments as messages from the "Community Managers" and other Q&A sessions have been misleading (at best) . Until console versions are launched (when?) this scenario will break up player groups.
The transition from a 6 week Alpha to Release on PC with only a 2 week gap and no Beta has suggested to me that the DLC is not yet fully formed and may well have serious bugs, hence the inability of the Horizons and Odyssey players to instance together.
I appreciate current global problems, but if it isn't finished as per your previous declaration of functionality then don't release it.

Your friends won't be getting Odyssey? Awww, I'm sorry to hear that :(

I have two friends (really I have friends) who recently got back into Elite and neither have bought Odyssey and until they do I'll keep playing in Horizons when they're online and want to mess about together.

Simples.

All the way back with Diablo2 you couldn't instance with people who didn't buy the expansion, even if you both played non-DLC characters. There isn't much that weird about having to buy an expansion to play with people who bought the expansion. The bizarre thing is that FD bothers to constantly give away stuff for free to people. And now those people are complaining FD isn't giving it away for free fast enough.

I cant think of a more literal example of unwarranted entitled.

You know, you dont have to defend every criticism of a game, just because you like it? The truth is Fdev messed up. As a customers we have a right to point this out. Some people pre-ordered Odyssey and now they get info about fails like that... Not an encouraging sign.

Yes, long term. Short term, Horizons won't get the planet tech upgrade until console release and will be held in a diiferent instance too until that time.
