Odyssey VR support

Im sure this is beating a dead horse at this point, but I havent been able to find any new info on Odyssey and VR support, I know its not lanching with full VR support (screen mode when on foot) which is a INSANELY dumb move on FDevs part being a good chunk of the playerbase plays exclusively in VR. It is an amazing experience and if you have the means, I suggest you try it.

Back to the topic at hand. Is there any new info on VR support when on foot? I mean being the assets are already in game, it shouldnt be THAT difficult to implement (I have coded VR projects in the past) Honestly, given how many people do play the game in VR and how upset the console folks are they dont get Odyssey until Fall, maybe they shouldve delayed Odyssey entirely until VR was finished and the console versions were ready..

I would be surprised if more than 20% of the ED player base played in VR. That said, at this point I'm far less concerned about VR support for Odyssey-specific content and far, far more concerned about the serious performance issues and bugs in the existing VR assets Odyssey introduced. As of release, I'm unable to play in VR using the Odyssey launcher because it is simply so laggy and buggy. I have a very high-end system and HMD, so it is not a hardware issue. These issues weren't present in Horizons either.

oh I hear you, that "Theatre mode" on foot is a total trainwreck, I also have a high end system (5900x/6900xt/32gb4000/980 Pro 4.0 SSD) When I saw how choppy the game ran, I thought Id just play through the opening tutorial just to see if it was just the on foot stuff, but nope, its all like that...

Shame on you FDev..

The instant I saw that the new stuff was a return to flat-world I could not believe it. I hadn't heard about this - though it was announced and talked about for months (only finding that out now). It never once even remotely crossed my mind that Frontier would do something like that - it's such a mistake IMO. I instantly wrote off all the on-foot junk. But at least I thought that the rest of Elite would be an improvement for VR users. I was also badly mistaken about that. Performance is no-where near good enough even with all VR settings to LOW and using modern high-end gear (easily more than double the minimum system requirements). So, if you're a VR user stick with Horizons right now (unless you like being sick). Wait until these things are fixed (which I expect will happen). If these changes are not fixed AND they are rolled into Horizons then the best game ever made will be ruined and my wife and kids will get their dad back.

Indeed, I ran Horizons in VR with Oculus with no issues, now after the update, I'm experiencing severe frame rate drops, specially on stations (on a ship) and on foot as well.
Also, you can begin to play fine at the beginning with frames start to drop until suddenly they reach like 6 FPS , and I have to exit the game and start it over to be able to play in VR. This wasn't happening in Horizons at all, seems Frontier messed up VR performance big time with this Odyssey update.

Ive noticed that the game runs SUPERBLY better with wired link over wireless, When I was running AirLink, it was a choppy mess (even though I have a router more than capable) But when I went wired with standard Oculus Link, its back to the 90fps locked that it normally runs at, but chrimmany that simulated screen SUCKS!!!!

My Quest 2 is working in Odyssey, but I'm getting so motion sick on-foot in the training mission! I've had to stop twice and let my nausea subside. :ROFLMAO: Hopefully that's due to the 2-D screen in a HMD and won't be like this when on-foot is fully immersed in VR.

I woudl love for rendering to just change to full screen not vr when I remove my headset or leave a ship so I can just take it off play normal then put it back on. It's not like this game has hot drops so far it's pretty calm while you load/ unload from your ship

Same problem for me. My Quest 2 worked fine with horizon (high) but now, with the update it's not playable near the stations in low config.

Stations are a problem in VR, space and planets is ok. Not great though, I have less FPS than before, and on planets I am always experiencing interpolated frames now, so I hope there will be some improvements on the performance front.

The on-foot virtual pancake mode is more jarring though, not only is it totally breaking immersion, it also requires me to recenter my HMD everytime it switches (unless I keep completely still while it loads). In addition to display bugs like ghosting weapons.

It feels even worse since on-foot stereoscopic view works fine in the remote camera, so it is nearly there ... sooo close!

Still, currently there are more pressing matters to fix, but real VR is something I still expect to be able to experience on foot in the not to distant future. But not now, now is bugfixing time.

I totally agree that this is not normal from Frontier. When you look at the game, it's made for VR. I played hundreds of hours without VR before buying a headset. And when I tried VR for the first time, it all made sense .. Elite realy was intended to be played in VR, that much is clear. Now for this extension to be played on a 'projection-screen' in front of your eyes is a blamage to the spirit of the game. Especially when you're on foot, and enter free cam, I was chocked: you can perfectly look around without a problem! .. I hope (naïvely) that they keep the VR on foot as a 'surprise' (a bit rubbish to hold this back as an 'option' imo) for the future. When the whole community helped them solve their main problems (and around 10 'updates'), they might simply push the 'enable VR-on-foot'-button. Frustrating ! (especially the silence about it)

I just shortly found out that you can have on foot VR by switching to the vanity cam. And it's awesome, walking between the wreck of a crashed spaceship in deadly cold environment with the central sun being nearly more than a brighter star; this feels so immersive, that's what I dreamt of since my childhood.
Now I put an external cam binding to the TAB key to be able to quickly switch between VR an d pancake mode and play 90% on foot in camera mode, only switching to pancake to activate buttons, etc. Yes, fps is quite low but everything is better than the virtual theater mode. I don't get why they didn't add the pancake HUD to the vanity cam mode and that would perfectly sufficient for now.
I tried to play Elite without VR, but once I had the Elite-VR-experience there's simply no point in going back look at a monitor instead of BEING inside the cockpit.
Later on, I want more space leg activities. Why can't I scan an escape pod? Is the passenger still alive? What had happened, why did the spaceship crash? What's inside the cargo pods, is the cargo unharmed, etc.

Update 6 is here and it's awesome! My performance has improved a lot, and I think it has also improved in the helmet. Frontier please give us a VR experience! We will forgive you bugs and lags, we will help you set up everything, but just give us this feature! Don't cut it! Let her lag, we will endure! We really need VR!

If I can't play in VR with the same quality I had on Horizon I don't see the point of continuing to play the game.
Exactly how I feel. Whilst an excellent VR integration to start with, it's stagnated since the original release and is now being book-ended by all accounts.

Play Horizons, or not play at all really. Currently, I've chosen the latter, I've never bothered to launch Oddity ;) once I learned from everyone else what a shambles it is.
