Are you surprised it so bad ??

To be honest and add to what i wrote up there: yes, just getting the base game in shape would help a lot. Of course, i will then start ranting about the one thing which actually sparked a little of interest in me about Odyssey. It's not the weak FPS, it's not the bad exploration, it's the social aspect. Among other things Odyssey was advertised as helping the social gameplay. And i do see how that could work.

I mean, if the game didn't only have bases with the flair and charm of an airports waiting area, but also more interesting places, i could see social events happening there. (Think: Mos Eisley cantina. ) But while i see that creating a number of more seedy places (probably connected to the flight terminal via the elevators, so really easy to add more and more) takes some time and can be added in the run of time, i also see that some even more basic parts are missing:
  • Proper chat system, at least on par to MMOs of say, the year 2005 or so.
  • Emotes
  • An outfit system, which goes beyond a handful of slightly different spacesuits in a few different colors.

That being said: i by now got it that the social aspect was merely added for advertisement purposes, without ever actually considering it in the design of Odyssey. But the game getting fixed and the new interfaces being brought up to the same level of functionality we previously had (including that they can be operated with all input devices, not only keyboard and mouse) would really eliminate what i am grumpy about.

I'm not really surprised that it is bad, but I do wonder how they managed to make it worse than the Alpha

Oh, that can be easily answered:
  • Adding more things which were not tested yet.
  • Understaffed internal testing / too short timeline (Can't find and report all the bugs... though, in this case, one can wonder what they did find what we haven't seen any more as it was fixed... )
  • Understaffed development / too short timeline (Not enough time left to fix all the found bugs, quite a common thing in commercial software development, unfortunately. )
  • Bad management milestones, which reward managers for keeping the schedule instead of for delivering quality.
(Seen that happen in many places... so, i don't know for sure if this is true for FD, but most of their releases over the years happened as if this was true. )

Which in the end boils down to: either some crucial part of the team, designers or developers, only really start working when the delivery deadline gets really close. Or there's some severe management and planing problems. As designers and developers who don't do their work usually don't keep their job, i know where my bet is...

I was expecting some hiccups given Elite's track record. I was not expecting a total dumpster fire and an objective downgrade to the old content I enjoyed, no. My bad, I guess. No more pre-orders or cosmetic purchases from me, good sirs. You've joined Blizzard in corporate hell.

What concerns me more is that because of how bad FDev's development management is, Odyssey likely will not get fixed because the managers probably won't allot any time for them to fix it, and instead will push them to make more addons to charge people for

Not surprised at all. Patch week has traditionally been bad. FD are usually quick to fix the worst issues though making things playable.

The big difference this time though is the jump in requirements and performance issues. That's something that's not likely to be solved quickly, if at all.

Purchased Alpha Delux pack and very glad about it. The game looks and feels great for it's current Public Beta state!

Be happy you have planets at all. This is going on on ps4...

Disappointed - bad first impression, I say first impression... I did try it when it originally came out all those years back and left it. I imagined it would have improved since then so I was eager to just buy in again and get started now you can leave the ship etc but so far I am amazed at what I see with the downgrades. It looks like they left the graphics engine in the hands of juniors. Really shameful release and honestly as a developer myself I was honestly wondering if they released some test branch.

I am half thinking to ask Steam nicely to refund me the lot but what alternatives are there? Star Citizen is a constant money sink and I know of nothing else.

Completed the training mission, had a beer with my pilot, and then spent several hours last night pottering around. Went back to Jameson (gawked at the Founders' World for a full 10 mintues), snatched up all the suits and weapons. Mined a few tons of tritium in preparation for my first ever expedition. Hoped in my T9 and went back to a little honey hole of a trade route I found and am socking away CR to divert upkeep costs.

So, yeah....uh....blame me, I guess. 🤷‍♂️
Oi, stop that! This week we rage and dramaqueen, no enjoyment posts.

No but the smart people on PC preordered and even added 20$ to it to just test play a 5 weeks older Alpha release (Fdev words) and now they have a half Beta wich ruined the game even for consoles, these are the facts ;)

Duuno with what some users have issue. I play since release day 1 and didn't have any crashes - not even one... I do not count bugs, cuz they will fix them sooner or later. But if we talking about game it works as intended. I think that many issue are more releated to the user PC specs rather than game itself.

I like overoptimist people who do not see the "reality" :D

They got the cash before we got the game !!!!! all those how prepaid are to blame
There is some truth to this. If nothing else, it may have contributed to why Frontier felt the need to release a clearly unfinished product rather than delay the release. Notice how they easily delayed the console release, where preordering was NOT an option!

Hmmm? We're onto something here!

I will join the throng of spontaneous confessors - it was my fault too - I'm Brian and so is my wife! - I played broke the alpha and it was great fun - but I like to poke things to see what happens - I get bored as soon as I actually have do things like complete missions or collect stuff so as soon as they fix all this stuff it'll probably be game over for me. The pew pew may keep me going for a while - but I may need it in VR o_O
