Usually close steam and restart it and it will notice if an update is available. Make sure you have the option to keep it up to date selected for that game but it should be by default.

Did you bought Odyssey on frontier store? Then run launcher.exe directly from program files.

Try to start EDLaunch.exe from your \Steam\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous directory.

Bypassing Steam altogether is what's working for me - go to your Steam installation directory, find its subfolder "\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous" and run EDLauncher from there, use your Frontier account credentials to log in and it will start to update properly for you.

looks like running the client directyl as ADMIN did it... coming back if it was the solution

There is another thread open on this, and unfortunately it is effecting Oculus ( me) and EPIC users as well. Ticket is here https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/32400
unfortunately the launch from the directory does not work for the Oculus version. Of course, no acknowledgment from FDev yet,
