Decide on your budget, preferred screen size, and how much you care about battery life...then pick out a cheap Acer or Asus that meet your criteria.

Make sure you get one with an SSD and not MMC. The latter are slow and poop.

The £350 15" Asus's we bought the kids before the pandemic are nice general purpose machines. Keyboard was surprisingly good. The screen doesn't have fantastic off axis viewing but absolutely fine head on.
