PSA - If your STEAM Odyssey refund was denied....

Try this page:

People have tried going through this process and got their refund.

Credit to Steam's ShelLuser for the specific process to follow:

Go to the overview of your purchases (you can use this link), then select the DLC, then use the option "I still have a question". That will open a ticket about the DLC which will be read by support itself.

Caveats are:

1) Ask for Steam credits, not cash. Just use the credits to buy something else later.

2) Make it clear you haven't played the DLC very many hours, as opposed to the number of hours you played in the base game.

3) Be clear and objective about the problems you encountered - e.g. it's hardware or login issues.

Don't start by being angry. The Steam folks by and large are not aware or responsible for the launch problems.

If you try this path, please report in this thread if it worked for you or if it didn't. This will help others know if it's still a viable path to refund.

I really don't want to do this but I've been stuck with Orange Sidewinder since last week, and nothing but silence from FDev about it. If I still can't play any of the games by tomorrow, I'll let you know how well a refund works.

If I were in this boat (I've yet to buy Odyssey), I would use those credits to rebuy Odyssey at a later date. For me, getting a refund would be just as much a statement to Frontier, letting them know just how badly they screwed up, as it would be "getting my money back". However, I feel fairly confident that Odyssey will be worth my money someday, so those Steam credits would not be wasted.

While I'm here, I must confess my surprise at just how many preordered Odyssey or bought it on release day in blind faith. The only people who should preorder a video game are people willing to be patient enough to wait for that game to be fixed one, two, or even three weeks after the release. All these people raging like their grandmother was run over by a drunk driver should never had preordered this (or any) game in the first place.

EDIT - I'm not implying this thread is a rage thread (I support this thread).

Make sure to screenshot and document all the Orange Sidewinder errors. It strengthens your case that the game is broken and not working for you, which helps validate the refund.

Yep, people can also just re-buy Odyssey later again.

Well, if anything that would be an expression of people loving the game elite dangerous enough to be excited about what's next. While frontier for years have not maintained the game anywhere close to supporting that level of passion people have for elite.. until now there's been no reason to directly mistrust them. Assuming elite is going for another round of paid expansions, i doubt the problem will happen again given the magnitude of the "lies" and plainly bad software. They'll pretty much need to do a no mans sky before another chance of making more money off the elite goodwill.

Yes the pertinent course of action would definitely be to refund and an repurchase if it is ever fixed.

Steam and FDev should offer refunds, if only in light of (EU) consumer protection law. If anyone experiences difficulties with this, feel free to send me a PM. If needed, I will provide correspondence templates.

EDIT: also note that in the EU they are legally obliged to offer refunds through the same payment method that was used for the purchase.

EDIT2: they actually excluded the EU right to withdrawal properly but should still refund on the basis of the Steam Subscriber Agreement.

I certainly agree, nothing more than a statement from me that I'm not happy - but I feel I have a reason to be.

In mine and others situations, pre-ordering is almost irrelevant. I did happen to pre-order but the problems I and others have are still going to be there if you've stumbled onto this game in the Steam store and thought yeah, sounds good... Other than the reviews, there is nothing to indicate there are problems that might actually affect gameplay and / or performance.

Not only that, but my major complaint isn't that Odyssey doesn't work - I can accept that given the price of the DLC and the amount of content it brings (I'm actually kinda happy with that to be fair). It's that this has broken a product that I've loved and invested in, nothing works right now; I can't event play base Elite. Yeah sure it's just a game and great example of a first world problem but it's become a brilliant way of bonding with my son and part of our routine.

Regarding the expectations of problems, I think this often misses the point somewhat.. After seeing FDev do simialr before and the community response it generated, no I don't expect that to be the norm, I expect them to learn from the mistakes and attempt to not repeat them - when they don't they deserve the community doubling down.

Yes and no.

I pre ordered with my eyes fully open. Having been through this before, I knew what to expect. I had the money, wanted to support FDev and figured it'd be alright in the end. I'm happy enough to put up with it in the meantime.

Others may be in a different situation, but that's where I'm at.

That's my point though, you fit in the category of "The only people who should preorder a video game are people willing to be patient [...]"

I'm even cool with people preordering and calmly asking for refunds. It's the crazy wide-eyed, red-faced rage responses that I raise an eyebrow to. I knew Odyssey would release as a mess (I even predicted this to Frontier in their official feedback thread), so despite great temptation, I decided not to preorder, because I knew I would be upset with the release day version of Odyssey. So today I have both my money and my sanity. Tomorrow (or next month or next year), I'll have Odyssey, once it's fixed proper.

I think that's what feels so frustrating.. not wanting to rip on your experience of the situation whatsoever it's difficult to not be jealous of those just having the typical launch problems.. It very much feels that FDev have given up and said well, it works for most of them so that's good enough for now; meanwhile a load of us are left with 3 broken games that no longer work at all.

Fair and reasonable. See you soon, buddy. :)

Preordering is incredibly harmful and has done immeasurable damage to this industry.
Yes, and we you the consumers keep feeding this monster.

This is the thing: goodwill only goes so far. If they dont fix Odyssey within a reasonable timeframe then I'll likely lose interest, quit and go play something else. My pre-order was essentially a gesture of goodwill that I trust them to deliver eventually. Time will tell.

However ruthless Frontier's approach is in this matter. I agree with others that we can't blame them for taking advantage of the idiot consumers that seem to make up their fanbase.

The preorderers and whiteknighters are to blame. Frontier is legally and economically obliged to capitalize on their existence.
