Odyssey Progress

Hi David,

Thank you for your post, it is good to know that we are being listened to.

I have been playing the game since the mid 1980s, and I am still here. I waited through the long hiatus after the release of Frontier First Encounters in the hope that there would be a new release at some point.

In the mean time I played FFE with some Russian "enhancements" to the graphics that were pretty good, but no substitute for a new version.

Despite bugs and frustrations, the game has always given me a lot of pleasure and fun.

I am currently out in the black and am nowhere near a space station, so I have no experience of space stations or settlements.

I have landed on a few planets and the vistas on the ground are amazing.

I do not have a super-high-spec video card, but my video performance seems OK so far, maybe it will be worse in a space station or settlement I do not know.

The Surface and Discovery Scanners are pretty horrible at the moment, with the planets lit up like suns, and the background around the planets in the discovery scanner just look awful. I also agree that the Galaxy looks a lot darker and further away now.

I also think the Galaxy and System Map user interfaces can be improved. I especially do not like the visual to indicate a planetary atmosphere, I think it looks really clunky and can definitely be improved or changed to a symbol or something instead.

Not being able to add or delete bookmarks when you have a star selected in a context menu, as you could in EDH, but having to do it via a single list of all bookmarks is also very frustrating.

Does the above stop me playing the game?

No, it does not.

Perhaps I am lucky.

That said I cannot get in right now!

It is a testament to the game that people get so worked up about it on these forums. If they did not care, no one would comment.

I myself have every confidence that things will improve. EDO must be a complex beast and it looks like it is twice the size of EDH, in terms of files and bytes.

So, I am not surprised there are issues and problems.

I fully expect that these will be solved and things will get better. I really appreciate the work of the Devs and Designers at FD and I know things will be fixed in time. I hope that older bugs can be fixed in due course as well.

I work in software myself so I know how difficult it can be just to identify the root cause on an issue, let alone fix it.

If people are really upset, they should just play something else for a while and come back in six months.

I will keep trucking along as long as I can get in and keep playing.

Best of luck, everyone.

With all due respect, after 4 days of Orange Sidewinders and with hotfix 2 not hotfixing it, I'd really like that regular and open communication on how it's being fixed now...
I really believe you're on it, but my idea of spending the weekend was very different from what I am doing now and my free time to play is almost gone now.
I know it's the weekend and all that, but you know, it's the weekend and all for us too.
At least you're lucky. On top of Orange Sidewinders I'm getting Blue Cobras every single time that I jump to a new system.

And let's not forget the transaction errors with the servers when I am farming Jameson Crash Site or buying a fighter in a station.

Most of the issues we're having are server-sided.

Greetings Commanders,

With our first hotfix now released and another one arriving very shortly, I wanted to take a moment to address the wider community feedback and reports regarding performance issues, server outages, and bug reports within Elite Dangerous Odyssey.

First and foremost, I would like to apologise wholeheartedly to those who have been suffering from these problems. I would like to reassure you that we take these issues very seriously and that they are our top priority and focus.

Our second hotfix will be released very soon, which we hope will address more of the reported bugs and bring further stability improvements into the game.  We will continue to work on updates which will resolve more bugs and improve stability further.

Some of our players are reporting poor performance on machines where we would expect the performance to be good, and others are saying it is fine. We are trying to get to the bottom of this. I have been playing on my old home machine from 2014, which has an Intel i7 Extreme CPU and a GTX 980 GPU, 16 Gb RAM, playing at 1080p full screen at Ultra. I was doing this so I could have a good feel for how the game was playing on older hardware, and I used this same machine during Alpha. I have also been playing on a high spec 2021 dev machine.

I would like to thank you all for your patience and support. The Elite Dangerous community has always been at the heart of the game. We understand that there are a number of players who have had problems accessing and playing the game and I can assure you that we are focusing fully on improving this for those affected and communicating with you openly and regularly about how these issues are being addressed.

Thank you all,

David

All of those Hotfixes were the direct result of total lack of Testing, almost zero QA, rushed, very early and extremely poor code and a non-existing post-production QC.
All of which the Devs were aware of, their team leaders definitely were aware of and the entire management must have been aware of.

"to those who have been suffering from those problems" .... means virtually every single Odyssey Customer.

Of course the Team will continue to work on updates and improve stability. They have no choice.
The Code is Alpha Quality that now must slowly make the transition to Beta Quality.
But you know all that, as you OK'ed these decisions that were presented to you in the meetings.

I would like to thank your PR recovery Team for writing this standard Text Block for you to sign.
It's not bad work and the wording is skillfully chosen to avoid admission of the clear mistakes, poor design decisions and utterly devastating priorities FDev has demonstrated to have.
The ELITE Dangerous community has never been in the focus of this Game since >5 years now - if it had been, Odyssey Alpha would have lasted 1-2 more months and we'd have seen a much more stable Beta sometime later, with time for the required code cleanup and optimizations.
I understand you though.... looking at the store prices for Weapon Skins, the true focus of ELITE Dangerous couldn't be more obvious - milk the cows and go whaling as if nothing happened.

I would like to thank you and your Management Team for their honesty though - which did not come in words. Actions speak louder than words.
To maximize profits and cook up your fiscal reports, you decided to throw that supposedly centric and top priority Community under the bus by forcing an unfinisihed Alpha into the Release channel.

Nothing highlights your honest priorities more than such an exemplary and unique course of action.

see you in the black, CMDR
(oh wait.... I forgot you don't really play the Game at all)

The amount of issues (mostly server issues) is really big. I know you must have your hands full and I'm not sure if you will ever read this, but this game at this moment has so much potential. Enpower the on-foot exploration because you will attract a legion of players. And for the love of God, make fighters more useful (let them LAND on planets even from space, and let us disembark from them), engineering, longer distance from main ship, and able to target on-foot characters. On-foot players should be able to counter fighters with the missile launcher.
Hear, hear.
Regarding text that I put in bold font.
We PvPers cannot ever use fighters when fighting other humans because over time, the lag gets horrendous. Lag SLF has greatly diminished the joy of large ship PvP. The issue has been raised for over a year and still no fix.

I used to be a quite the fangurl and white knight, but after over 5000 hours of playing and four years of continuous bugs, I have almost completely lost faith.

For heaven's sake, please completely separate Odyssey from Horizons. For instance things like this happened: https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/33713 -which thank goodness has been supposedly fixed. What's going to be reported next? I love my ships and my mats have been hard earned; I will not be risking them by logging in and interacting with a Horizons engine subject to a volatile Odyssey.

Imagine if Frontier were involved in medical, defense, security or financial software.

Thank you.

I LIKE the way on foot balances with space gameplay. In space I'm a damn billionaire with high reputation wherever I go. Now I'm picking up missions and gaining with the goods I pick up but if I get spotted and have to run - I keep the goodies - but have failing mission I'm losing rep. Suddenly I can lose and I love that.

Finally some real challenge, jeopardy and sink. Looking forward to seeing the bugs get squished as we go. People like their bawling and knee jerk reactions, steam rating dipped on first sight and all, I know, but keep it up and don't give in .. another long term, hardcore classic in the making. o7
