Odyssey Progress

@sallymorganmoore Ever since patch 6 I have great difficulty loading the game and its getting to the point that I'm not going to put myself through the hassle of it. When I open the game through the launcher it appears to start up normally but within a few seconds the start up screen goes down and I just see my desktop screen with the Elite Icon remaining in the task bar. I can eventually get the menu screen to show up after repeatedly clicking the icon but the menu screen is totally unresponsive. The only input that does anything is when I click with the mouse and it just makes the menu screen go down and reveal my desktop screen. The Elite icon remains in the task bar and the only thing I can do with it is use task manager to close the program.

I usually will get the game to work eventually but it is becoming increassing dificult. Some of the things I have done are to start another game, close it and then start Elite. this didn't work yesterday. Restart the PC, this didn't work yesterday. Update GPU drivers and restart PC, this did work yesterday. Validating files used to work but this has stopped working some time ago. I'm now totally bored of the effort required to get the game just to open so without some resolution I will look elsewhere for some gaming entertainment. This is really disappointing because when it works I'm quite enjoying Odyssey.

Edit: Typical, I logged in no problem immediately after posting this. I played for a coupple of hours, logged out to go for something to eat then logged on again without any problems. I honestly can't understand whats going on with it.
Honestly I suspect a problem with Windows rather than EDO. From your description it appears to have been random, i,e. the things you did to make EDO work probably had no actual effect. The cause might have been unrelated to Update 6, too — for example, it could have been a bug in a Windows component that happened to be updated around the same time (unless you changed the automatic update settings, Windows updates are downloaded and installed in the background, and you are probably not even aware of them unless they require a restart).

You’re playing in the fullscreen mode, am I right? If the problem returns it might be worth trying the borderless mode instead.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I'm working on the theory that it may have something to do with Citrix, which i use for working from home. If I leave Citrix open it appears to corellate with the problem. So far I've had no problem when I close Citrix before starting Elite.

In short, after more than a year nothing has been resolved and the difference between the previous version and after the update to Odyssey which has completely destroyed the performances is clear, I would like to clarify as written in this post in the link that before this update the game ran at ultra and in 4K on a GTX 1080 TI with framerates over 60 fps, now not anymore and not even on the new hardware with a 3090 which has to compensate for this drop in performance even indoors, so I'd like to know how it ran on your pc since antialiasing is also broken, what you say is a bit misleading since many users complain of the same problems.
I never had any problems until Horizon and I never opened any posts about technical issues because the game worked perfectly until yesterday's bitter surprise when I started Odyssey, now the frame drops and poor quality even extend to Horizon with crazy Aliasing.
It goes without saying that even completely uninstalling and re-installing the drivers and deleting the graphics settings from the folder doesn't change nothing.

This game is great and has a great community.
Sure performance is the hot spot, but I'd like to see a few more ships and some random events as you explore the galaxy.
In reality it would take very little to make this game a legend.
Thank you for your work and I wish you a good continuation.

It's true that Odyssey still have many areas with poor performances.

But also Beatrisa, I can insure you that in a year a lot have improved framerate wise, when on-foot at least. In GCZ, I went from 1080p / 40 FPS to now 4K (FSR) 55 FPS, on my 1080ti.

To my understanding the rendering in space had to be downgraded in the process though.

I think there was a lot rewritten for Odyssey that gives it higher requirements, much in the same way the requirements change if you go from Windows 98SE to Windows 7 ;)

There was — the devs were quite open about that, although I do not think they expected the performance hit to be that bad.
They said performance would be pretty much the same as Horizons and never changed that statement until Odyssey's release came in like a wrecking ball.

I'm also not sure the currently stated minimum specs would give an experience that most people would call "playable" in all areas.

I think the Horizons monimum spec would give amazingly playable experience, for some the Odyssey minimum spec would but unfortunately its hardware specific. Its playable on my Ryzen 7 laptop but some have had choppy performance on PCs vastly over that spec.

Its this performance issue and no resulting reason why it performs so badly for some even after a year of patches that keeps people playing 3.8. as suggested many times we were all waiting for the on foot gameplay being added to Horizons code base but fdev want to plow forward with the "4.0 upgrade" which is still firmly in late alpha early beta. There maybe code down but performance is way to unstable to consider it prime time to be honest.

Being half a cycle in (we normally see a new DLC every two years or so i am wondering if it will get to complwtion before the Thargoids get here and burn the bubble.

One of the problems with deciding what specification of computer is needed to make Elite playable is that there are almost as many opinions on what is playable as there are active and former players of Elite, part of this of course is down to the fact that there are so many ways to play.

This is another piece of circumstantial evidence to support my suspicion that the performance hit is, on the average, much worse on NVIDIA GPUs than on AMD ones, and that FDev are a primarily AMD shop and thus did not realize the problem until it was too late.

To be fair, that is something FDev never even hinted at promising.
