ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Great news, my oculus rift will be in by next week. Perfect timing actually. I just found these two items,

-AMD CPU 8 cores 4.4ghz

-The flight stick of the Gods AKA Hotas Warthog

which I'm also gonna buy hopefully mid January. I think it's time for a big upgrade. So far the end of the year has been good to me.

Awesome. You're going to love it!

I'd skip the $200 amd CPU though and invest in an Intel i5 or i7. For the money you can almost buy a mother board and new intel chip. I used to be an AMD guy and I'm a fanboi of neither but, in all honesty, the AMD chips just don't compare to intel chips. I have another computer with AMd and it's a dog compared to my intel machine.

So far, B3.0 seems a lot smoother for me, even managed to be in a Station with other commanders and no jutter. Go figure.

I have dabbled for maybe 15 mins however thoughts so far.

performance much better. on low detail in my GTX670OC icesteroids in training 2 are now smooth - they were unplayable in beta 2.

had some "fun" getting extended mode actually running on my rift, but eventually got it swapped over (some odd bug where something is picking up control of my menu and making it scroll on its own really really fast.

but no joy with direct. I could not seem to get it on my rift, it was displaying on my screen.

this was with 4.2 drivers. Do i need to jump to 4.3? (many apps seem to not work so well with 4.3 so was holding off)

Does anybody know how to disable the "screencopy to monitor" when in direct mode?
When i am in direct mode, i see the a oculus-copy on my monitor... is it possible to disable that?

Hi all.

Sorry a bit random but can I ask you all if your head tracking worked right away when you first looked through your rift? So basically with the desk demo. I just cannot get it to work at all and its annoying me now as I get very bad nausea without it. Going to try a full re install of windows tomorrow but honestly I don't think it'll work. Whats even more annoying is the fact that head tracking works fine when you move the rift in your hand and view the main monitor. Other than a full re install I have tried pretty much everything.

I honestly think the hardware is knackered but maybe someone has had a similar problem. I've tried runtimes 4.2 and 4.3. Same deal.

Cheers all.

Sounds similar to the problem I had, but give us a bit more detail. Does it work in both modes with the demo scene?
When in ED does it work in extended mode and direct mode at all (apart from the head tracking)?

Sorry. Was a bit vague! Yes the rift works fine in extended and direct. Just no head tracking. Demo scene is fine. From what I can tell it works as it should just without the head tracking.

I remember that i had problems until I setup the Multiple displays option in the NVIDIA Control Panel, from that day all normal.
And I don't make useless fights with Direct Mode, I just stay extended and enjoy the Game. Just low down the graphic specs, useless to keep them high on the rift ;)

Hi Mad Mike,

Yes Direct mode only started for me when I upgraded to the latest runtime linked to SDK 0.4.3 release. I totally understand holding off (maybe backup the old runtime and roll back if you want a quick test?).

IMHO Extended mode still seems much better at this time. I just like tinkering with Direct mode ;)

Hmm, with 0.4.3 I could get direct mode to work with ED with tracking, but extended mode didn't work at all. Having gone through all the pain I wish I'd just rebuilt when King5ton suggested it... do you have a spare drive you can try a rebuild with?

Hi bmad,

Not random at all, sorry to hear head tracking is giving you hassle. I just got lucky, connected my DK2 clicked on Demo scene and head tracking worked first time.

A few people have been on the forum recently with odd problems. You've probably already done it, but the easiest checks are unplugging anything else that might be conflicting (webcams/joysticks etc).

In the Demo scene is the blue light coming on the camera? Through the HMD can you look left/right or not at all?

You mentioned you think it's a hardware problem - are you able to test it on any other computer (laptop/mate/neighbour/work etc).

Cheers
Mark

Hi,

Can someone suggest a way to check my FPS in DK2, I have Asus GTX 970. Tried MSI Afterburner software, but couldn't get FPS to show, and I'm struggling to find a solution, google search doesn't come with anything useful - thx in advance
